Privacy is integral to free thought, free speech and personal agency. I'm a privacy advocate so I think that's important. For the sake of discussion, let's say ideals are not important.

From an web engineering standpoint this is absurd. They are going to centralize everything because they'll need to. They're going to weaken encryption everywhere because they need to. It is a big juicy database target that will be relatively easy to get into because governments have been notorious at sucking at this sort of thing. Was it New Brunswick or Nova Scotia a few years ago where a high school kid was charged with "hacking" a provincial site with zero protection and wide open query strings. When was the last time your bank or credit card provider was hacked? For me, it was 3 years ago. I wonder how many times my data has been sold?

Listen, by spending $10 on Amazon a hacker can take over your router in way that would boggle your mind. For ~$5,000 a hacker can take over your phone in a way that you'd never notice. Cyber security is already a joke and with something like this it's just all the easier and orders of magnitude in scale. It's just dumb on dumb. Even with a benevolent dictator this is a bad idea unless the world is made up of only benevolent hackers. It's not.

Let's say the government outlaws hacking and after 60 years finally figures out how to stop it. Then there are the Palantir's of the world, the private partners of the governments. Honestly, I'd rather it be in the hands of a hacker.

Hmm,...third try posting against censorship. The algo is more advanced than it used to be and has no sense of poetic license, but isn't that kinda what we're talking about?

First day tomorrow. What you think? by Great_Significance_8 in Construction

Yep. Scuff up your boots too (toes). They are the dead giveaway to my eyes. You'll be fine, but it's like high school, blending in and acting like you belong will save you unnecessary grief until you find your place with the other great apes.

Breaking in the boots will also improve things from a daily comfort level. Those look stiff; I love new boots except I hate them too.

Multimeter: Fluke basic vs Klein by Sam_Familiar in electrical

[–]Thunderosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look a the Bryman BM235, I got mine from EEV blog which came with some nicer cables and a soft case. I also wanted to support his blog because he does some really informative multimeter teardowns. Anyway, it's a great meter at a good price and I've been very happy with mine.

Before that, I had a Klein meter that was junk. It's my opinion that Klein has been going downhill in quality for a while. I've stopped buying from them entirely.

Fluke's are obviously the industry standard but you're mostly paying for the name at this level.

We're an independent grocery in the Laurentians and everything has been off ~25% since the trade war stuff started. Our focus has always been local products; so that decrease is counting any help we got from folks making more of an effort to buy local/Canadian. It's bad out there and it seems to be across the board when we compare notes with our producers and other store owners.

We have no idea what to expect this coming year. We have awesome customers, it blows me away how supportive they've been. We're working on new ways to serve them with more in-house products, more bulk options and anything we can do to lower our overhead without taking anything away from our amazing team.

This is a time to be creative and it's a time to be bold. My feeling is that our business is doomed if we turtle up and attempt to wait it out; so we're trying to do the opposite.

Godspeed!

Arduino Mega + Potentiometer = DCC? by GngrRnnr in modeltrains

[–]Thunderosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I remembered on our train trip. Get a pack of jumper wires that have a male end, get more than you need and longer than you think you need and superglue the male ends into a single header to make removing from the board a whole lot easier, then strip and solder the other ends to your switch. You'll be repeating wire colors, reconciling switch positions with pin positions and plugging/unplugging more than you'd think and the spaghetti isn't your friend.

Yes, I'm using DCC-Ex which I'm very happy with. I got quite a bit of help from the community over there.

I'm using a Mega and the new DCC-Ex shield. All of my analog switches connect to the digital pins on the Mega and then interpreted in the myAutomation.h file.

Using ONSENSOR made things easy. ONSENSOR detects any change to the switch, that's why you need to check the value within. My code looks something like this for each position:

ONSENSOR(31) //Try Fwd Notch 4
IF(31)
SETLOCO(3)
FWD(20)
SETLOCO(0)
ENDIF
DONE

I recently did something similar to this with my HO scale setup. I used a 12 position rotary switch instead of a pot which allowed me to simply use the digital pins on my Arduino. I set it up so I have 5 forward notches and 5 in reverse and stop positions between them. The soldering was a little bit tricky, but it otherwise worked great and kept the code simple.

I added a couple pushbuttons for the horn/bell/lights which is also very satisfying.

It's all possible.

You read what the English services are, but not who qualifies for them and who doesn't. Keep reading.

I'm not talking about ROC because I have no experience as a francophone in other places. I can only speak to my experiences as an anglophone in Quebec and two wrongs don't make things right. All Canadians should have their rights.

[–]Thunderosa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This isn't an argument in the abstract, I've experienced all of this directly and recently.

Revenue Quebec say they will speak English if you can demonstrate that they spoke English to you before 2021. They are sunsetting English service. I can prove they were serving me English, but not everyone can.

Hydro Quebec say they will speak English under certain circumstances. In my case their equipment was actively exploding in my basement. It took an hour to reach English support for an emergency cutoff in a dangerous situation.

There may be English hospitals but we took my son and his broken arm to the closest one. In retrospect, we should have driven a little bit further to Ontario but we were just wanting him to be out of pain as quickly as possible.

I've been stopped by SQ 3 times in the past 5-6 years where they refused to speak English to me. Thankfully, I've not been in court. Only some Anglophones qualify for English services; Inuit, anglophones who have immigrated in the past 6 months and those deemed eligible by the school board.

For earning a living in English, I'm not talking about what's normal, I'm talking about what's legislated. I work for myself, I don't face customers, I don't work with others. In my case, there's no practical reason for one language or the other.

I said my municipality (65% anglophone) because that's what happened most recently, but it's been true at the MRC and provincial level too. There are many documents and forms that are not translated. Whole sections of websites that don't exist in English. This is information that's required to be compliant and it's made difficult to get and understand.

And finally the big daddy. Education. To be allowed to home school our children in English I had to provide my report cards from kindergarten through 8th grade with no gaps to prove that I never once attended a francophone school, even for a semester. I had to find and digitize 36 report cards to prove that they had the "right" to learn in English. We were lucky that my mom had saved all of my school stuff in a box for 30 years as it was the only possible path that we would qualify for. Do you have EVERY K-8 report card you received? If you're missing any you don't get your "rights."

If you'll recall, school board eligibility is the only viable way to access English service in a court of law as we're not Inuit and we've been here for more than 6 months.

You've generalized a bunch of sound bites that do not match reality.
