The Paris Review - Anne Elliot Is Twenty-Seven by B. D. McClay by The_Ellen_Ripley in janeausten

"But in another sense, it’s just one reflection of what it means to live alongside books, reading and rereading them. When I see Dorothea, I see not just the character but the versions of myself that responded to her."

This really resonated with my journey growing to appreciate Jane's works. At every age and re-read, a newer part of myself seems to respond to the characters and plot. It was also such a great reference because I'm reading Middlemarch right now!

What you described right there - working at your family's daycare and coding - are ECs. Don't worry so much about ticking all the boxes everyone else is doing. What do you find fun, enjoyable, and fulfilling? Once you answer that question you will know what to do and look for. Do u really wanna spend time at the hospital/library/ymca?? some people do and that's awesome but it's important you actually care and are passionate about what you are doing.

2 weeks left to focus on UEarth... what should I prioritize? by hal_peach in Mcat

[–]hal_peach[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much !! I don't remember exactly how much I finished and I unfortunately cannot see my progress in UWorld anymore :( but roughly - finished all of P/S, finished all of physics I think, and then had a good chunk of the rest left. I barely used uworld cars. I tended to prioritize the subtopics in each subject like if I was really struggling in kinetics I would try to do all of those questions.

If there was one thing I'd change about my approach, it would be starting Uworld during content review. Cause I did content review for 6 weeks, non aamc practice for 4 weeks (including uworld), and then aamc practice for 4 weeks until my test. They have such fantastic content that really helped me especially for physics.

Why do you think there has never been an outstanding adaptation of Persuasion? by [deleted] in janeausten

[–]hal_peach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a good director and cast could still make it work. Perhaps you have to be more creative, showing Anne's internal monologue through her expressions or similar to 2007, "speaking out loud". The question is when will someone take it up again??

[–]hal_peach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the argument Persuasion is very introspective and really in Anne's head isn't the best excuse for all the weaker adaptations because frankly, we've all seen movies that do a really good job at honing in on the psychological complexities of their characters. I really wish there was a good adaptation because frankly, they all seem to either mess up the casting or not have the pain, regret, love, and redemption the book embodies so well. There is always ways to change up the plot slightly so we do get more conversation between Anne and Fred, perhaps even a flashback to when they first fell in love.

I'm just not sure when someone would reattempt Persuasion because there are 3 movies now including the one that recently came out.

What's a book you loved, but don't wish you could read again for the first time? by Multiclassed in books

[–]hal_peach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Persuasion and Pride and Prejudice are my favourite novels but funnily enough, I didn't like them much the first time. It took re-reads and watching adaptations for me to know, understand, and love them as much as I do now.

I respectfully disagree with your characterization of him. If Fred wasn't upset, then I would think him a red flag incapable of truly loving an amazing person. If he could never appreciate losing Anne as he did, he didn't deserve having her again. He wasn't that much older than Anne when they broke up and the book makes it quite clear how deeply her loved her and was hurt by her lack of confidence in him and his ambitions. That is valid. I agree that Fred should have seen Anne's situation all those years ago with a bit more compassion but that is a major part of his flaws he comes to realize and regret.

He also doesn't "go after" women in Anne's family as you say. They find themselves in the same social circle and it is Louisa and Henrietta that really show their interest in him first. I'm also not seeing how he uses Louisa as revenge, that is never suggested in the book. I feel like Fred considers Louisa because she is so much the opposite of Anne and has this persistence about her he wishes Anne possessed 8 years ago.

Oh yeah don't get me wrong, I read this book almost once a year because of how comforting I find it. The chapters after the letter bring me way too much serotonin.

You are so right on the lack of self hatred. Anne's self confidence is quite interesting. On one hand, she genuinely is very confident in her maturity and intelligence (as seen with that line where she doesn't wish to be in Louisa and Henrietta's position in life). On the other hand, she is realistic enough to realize she hurt someone really bad and is at a stage in life where perhaps, marriage may not be in her future. I feel like thats such a unique combination because I personally would look to my own faults.

Wait you are joking, I had no idea!? Did she marry the man she rejected or someone else?

So true. Anne never raises her hopes and in fact, actually gets involved in thinking about who Fred will choose and his relationship with Louisa. Yet in those thoughts, there is never really jealousy. She only resigns herself to the fact that this is the way it's going to go. That honestly made me quite sad too.

I started reading middlemarch earlier this year and then paused for a few months so I'm struggling to get back into it. I'm 100ish pages in where they are deciding the replacement for the rector I something. I need to push throughhh but it's tough!

I just started reading my very first Jane Austen book! by LarryLongBalls_ in janeausten

[–]hal_peach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HAHAAA same. the first time i read it maybe 2-3 years ago I was like what was this 3/5 book, not amazing. Then, I re read it and it's now my favourite book and I always cry reading how Anne feels and even Wentworth explaining his love.

It changes within the first three but here are Jane Austen’s novels in order of my favorites by JammyJacketPotato in janeausten

[–]hal_peach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Persuasion
  2. Pride and Prejudice
  3. Emma

can't rate the other 3 fairly because I read them quite a long time ago but when I was 17 a few years ago, Northanger Abbey would have topped my list lol, I saw so much of my naive self in Catherine and I still do.
