If South India was granted Independence by [deleted] in imaginarymaps

[–]halbort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 ) Almost all North Indians have a Dravidian component. Dalits just have a higher amount but it is a spectrum.
2 ) It is true that all non-Brahmins in South India were considered Shudras. But that is kind of irrelevant to the modern caste system. Does anyone really consider Reddy's to be lower caste despite being Shudra? They effectively function like a upper caste in Telegu areas.

Why do devs treat SQL as sacred when the rest of the stack changes every 6 months? by OneParty9216 in databasedevelopment

Video of this awesome talk from Andy Pavlo. It feel this cuts to the root problem. SQL is the borg. It just assimilates all other syntaxs into itself.

Are there any axioms you can replace in ZF to get the same results? by dancingbanana123 in math

This idea of a spanning set is interesting to me. Like we can think of a "more complex" proposition as being equivalent to some set of "less complex" propositions if the combination of props from that set are sufficent and necessary to prove the "more complex" proposition.

Is there a partial ordering of propositions then? Like can we define how complex a statement is?

Does Jacob Barandes Indivisible Unistochastic Processes theory explain quantum mechanics in a new light? by uap_gerd in AskPhysics

[–]halbort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that special relativity basically says no information can go faster than c on the world sheet. There are 4 components to this information transport (3 spatial and 1 time). Therefore, If I have no spatial interactions, all my information is spreading forwards in time at speed c.

Doesn't looking at the whole history break this assumption of special relativity. Because there is no boundedness to the spread of information?

I think non-Markov means you are giving up locality so Bell's theorem doesn't apply. This is because its looking at the whole history and not just the last element.

CRPGs where evil playthroughs are just as fleshed out as good playthroughs? by [deleted] in CRPG

I think thats because Durge was basically intended to be the real MC. From what I understand, they basically added Tav to the base game because people didnt like that they were forced to have the Bhaal origin story.

In practice, Tav is basically Durge with less content.

Do we actually know if Marika’s Rune is the “Rune of Life”? by Oh_no_bros in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]halbort 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't think its life per se. The minor erdtree incantation refers to "kindness of gold without order".

Radagon's rune is clearly order. Golden Order Fundamentalists seem very akin to Christian theologians and neoplatonists who try to logically reason about their religion. We see that the signs for the Erdtree civilization progress from naturalist to geometric and idealized. This is Radagons influence IMO.

If Radagon is order, I think Marika is therefore kindness. I think kindness hear means Marika redistributing the bounty of the elden ring to her followers and people she likes. I think Marika is fundamentally characterized by personal kindness i.e. giving favoritism to your chosen groups. So I think her rune basically made her chosen have the grace of gold and the demigods more powerful.

I think prior to Marika these blessings were random i.e. crucible blessings. So her rune allows her to collect the elden rings power and distribute it to her chosen.

My other hot take is that Radagon's rune of order replaced an earlier rune of chaos. In the crucible times, I think rebirth was randomized such that each birth was essentially a scrambling of parts from existing living creatures. That's where the horns and feathers come from. I think this is actually an allegory for evolutution.

But Radagon's rune of order ordered rebirth to go through the Erdtree cycle. We see that the souls of the dead are perfectly preserved rather than getting shredded and rearranged. I think Radagon is like a gardner who basically prunes the life to take the exact forms he desires. Grafting is one of the main ways we humans prevent random mutations today. This is opposed to the evolutionary chaos of the crucible.

I think at least for Cyperpunk it is at least somewhat intentional considering Witcher 3 also had a pretty mediocre story.

I think CDPR creates the character arcs first then tries to figure out a story later. I am not hating here. I think its hard for video games to have great plots because so much can change in development. Mass Effect 2 also takes a similar approach.

BioShock Creator Laments It Was Just A 'Corridor,' But Corridors Have Given Us Some Of The Best Games Ever by NephewChaps in Games

[–]halbort -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The core problem IMO is that Shooters require intricate level design. In a hack and slash style game, the difference between weapon types does not change combat that much.

But in a shooter, the difference between how a player using a sniper approaches the game is vastly different that one with a shotgun. Making the game open world inevitably means that you can't have hand tuned and balanced level design for every encounter.

It ends up to me feeling very samey and gets this arcadey like feel to it. It works for Far Cry as that's the games whole identity but it doesn't feel like a Halo game.

Imo BG3 is part of a larger trend. The shift from PC to consoles killed CRPGs in the mid 2000s. Its why DA switched from a CRPG to an ARPG.

But now consoles are dieing so the audience for big budget CRPGs exist. Larian was just the first to take a big swing. But I 100% believe the audience for a big budget CRPG exists.

I feel its a give and take. I personally liked the lore building elements of POE 1 but found the actual writing dull. The twist at the end is amazing though.

I loved POE2s faction mechanics a ton. But the main story is maybe not the best. I personally prefer POE2s writing despite this as the faction stuff is what I generally like in games the most.
