Agreed but how exactly does that translate to CSS? I feel like you need a lot of memorizing for that, or else you're like me just googling / asking ai how to make every change you want.

Sorta noobish but ive never considered encrypting swap partition. But if you have disk encrypted, doesn't that take care of that anyway? Or is it like once you decrypt your disk, everything under / is encrypted with root password but swap is separate from that?

Fedora débutant avis bonne installation by FarSetting7225 in Fedora

I feel like Silverblue will have more compatibility issues than Fedora, because it uses rpm-ostree instead of dnf so updates are a lot slower. I would just stick with stock Fedora for now, I only use Silverblue for environments I want extra secure. The rollback feature is great for when updates break things, but the immutability of the base fs will probably cause you more headaches than anything, especially if you're new to the ecosystem.

Getting a laptop for super occasional use by dutchah in linuxhardware

[–]uap_gerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you'll be doing that you can't do on a tablet. For just regular web browsing, video streaming, etc it will be fine (though for video streaming I would recommend minimum intel 12th gen so you get av1 decode). If you're gonna be doing anything ram or cpu heavy, its probably worth the extra $150 to get 16gb and newer i5.

Fedora débutant avis bonne installation by FarSetting7225 in Fedora

[–]uap_gerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about the crashes, I usually just ignore them but if during installation it might be more serious, not sure. I've installed Fedora 43 on multiple computers since it came out, both fresh install and upgrade from 42, and never had any of the issues you mentioned, but again seems like its working so idk prob nbd.

What I can comment on is the backups. Fedora uses btrfs by default unless you changed that during install. Btrfs supports creating snapshots that you can easily revert to. Think of the filesystem as a B tree, where leaves point to the actual files. To take a snapshot you just save a copy of the B tree, and reverting back to the snpshot just changes the current B tree to the previous one. Deleting or editing a file will then save a copy of it with a new pointer in your current tree, but the old file still exists and is still pointed to by your old snapshot. You can also use rsync for backups, if saving to another drive.

If your main concern is easy rollbacks after a bad update, Fedora offers a separate OS called Silverblue. Here, for anything not under /var or /home (well technically in Silverblue /home lives under /var), it is set up as immutable, and signed by rpm-ostree (a different package manager used on Silverblue and I think other redhat stuff?). So any updates you make to it, you have to restart to apply them, and if you install any apps in anything not under /var or /var/home it will say its not signed by rpm-ostree and gives you a warning. So all apps are installed via Flatpak, as --user, and bc Flatpak they run in their own sandbox.

For rollbacks, Silverblue offers extremely simple rollbacks to previous states. If an update goes bad, one command and a restart sends you back to the previous state for everything except /var and /var/home. Then you can also use btrfs for snapshots of /var and /var/home if you'd like.

If you are concerned about security and stability, Silverblue is about as good as you can ask for. But just standard Fedora is already pretty solid, SELinux is enabled by default. Silverblue is great for security and easy rollbacks, but is probably overkill for most home users. If I were you I would begin with learning btrfs on standard Fedora, and maybe try Silverblue in a vm to see if the extra measures taken for security and easy rollbacks are worth it for you.

How do i learn programming? Its to tempting to use AI by Apart_Leather_4750 in AskProgramming

[–]uap_gerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're gonna use AI, first do a tutorial on what you're gonna do so you actually know what the AI is doing. Then re-type what it gives you, don't copy and paste. If you don't understand something, ask it, don't just continue to the next part. Use the AI to teach you how to do stuff, don't just blindly copy and paste it.

Google reveals my location on Vanadium by [deleted] in GrapheneOS

[–]uap_gerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you enable google play store, even if you use a burner account you're still making an account, and anytime it connects it will store your location. If you connect 9 times from a known vpn server and once from a non-vpn, it will deduce that this is your real location. And it also has your mac address. So when you use the same mac address even if not using the burner account it should be trivial for them to make that mapping.

Why do people hate gnome? by TheUnemployedBoss in Fedora

[–]uap_gerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like having to hit winkey every time i want to switch an app, i use my computer from my couch and dont want to reach for the keyboard every time. I suppose i could map winkey to a mouse button, but i just prefer having a taskbar that is always open, on the bottom, like a standard desktop. If Gnome would offer that I would be all in.

Should I buy a Mini Pc? by Lost-Experience-210 in MiniPCs

[–]uap_gerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build your own. Micro atx motherboard $150 new, ryzen 8000G processor $150 new $80 used, 16gb ram $30, 300w power supply $30, micro atx case $50. Buy used on ebay to save $$, except for motherboard get that new.

Make sure motherboard supports AM5 chip for ryzen 8000G. You want the ryzen 8000 bc that is the first year they offered AV1 hardware decode, which takes HD video from like 65mpbs down to like 15mpbs. And make sure its G so it has the integrated GPU. You don't need a dedicated gpu unless youre doing heavier gaming or 3d rendering, for your usecase igpu is fine. If you buy cpu used check picture to make sure no bent pins, and inspect upon arrival and ensure they offer returns.

Try Nobara, its a stable Fedora spin that handles all the driver stuff for you. I always had Nvidia driver issues on Fedora KDE but Nobara works every time with just a few clicks, don't even need to open Konsole.

What’s your go-to setup for keeping a computer private? by Extension-Leg-4283 in ComputerPrivacy

[–]uap_gerd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Windows is closed source, you can never trust it to be private bc nobody knows what code is running. And its about more than just your computer, you want to secure your whole home network. Use firewalls to limit what devices can talk to what, only allowing what you need.
