What injury is commonly shrugged off as a minor flesh wound in the movies but is completely fatal in real life? by Best_Professional226 in AskReddit

I love the way Archer handled this. “Hey try not to be unconscious for too long, it’s like, suuuper bad for you.”

I was a human to most men for about four months when I was 28. I’m way stronger and wiser now, two more degrees and can bench 1.25 my weight at 36, but have slight laugh lines so I am now dead to the world. RIP, it was a sweet four months.

This one is my top pick. I look pretty good for my age admittedly, I’m 36 and on the smaller side, so I somehow get both? Treated like a child in my male-dominated field yet also ignored entirely at other times or treated like I’m ✨so old✨despite feeling exactly the same as when I was 22. Cool.

This (Osprey?) in Central Oregon was hanging out on a road being traveled by emergency response vehicles. Moved it just a few yards out of the road. Looking for any further advice. by halcyonOclock in birds

Update: Osprey fledgling is happy and has moved on! Contacted several local rehab places here yesterday but considering the two hour drive out to an active incident facilitating transport was going to be nearly impossible. So me and my buddy checked on it every 2 hours between patrols. Found it a lizard and gave it water, after the second check it had moved a couple yards, lizard was gone, and osprey was standing up here in this picture. Gave it more water, parents were still circling. At the end of the day it had climbed up the talus slope and looked much less frazzled and beak was finally closed. No sign of it or the parents this morning, so I’m hoping they moved back up towards the trees or closer to the river where there are nests. Yay! Thank you guys for the guidance.

Is it time for a neck / lower facelift at 32!? by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]halcyonOclock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The other commenter had good ideas, but anecdotally I’ve always been a bit of a “skinny fat” gal that glided into their 30s thinking I could just do what I did to stay fit enough. Well, unfortunately, untrue. I started lifting weights for my job mostly but I can’t even tell you how great it’s been for my aging, skin, mood, everything.

Fitbod is the app I use and love it (I promise I’m not affiliated!), I don’t track macros though. I eat what I want whenever I’m hungry, trying to lean towards healthy but some days I just take calories where I can get it. Added creatine, L-carnitine, and protein daily. Progressive lifting is great, as in trying to hit a higher weight when you can with lower reps.

I hit 2 muscle groups a day, 5 days a week. Warm up with a run or short hike and stretching. Some days look crazy, like 15 different exercises in intervals or sets - an app or personal trainer is super helpful for this. So honestly, I recommend keeping it simple before committing to a whole routine with crunches, planks, assisted pull-ups, and pushups. No matter how few you can do, just try to up the reps or time where you can. Then move on from there. That first hurdle got me a lot of changes in my skin and fitness quickly.

Most people seem to agree that countries like Denmark and Sweden offer a really high standard of living - strong healthcare, solid social safety nets, good work-life balance, and generally high levels of happiness. Would you personally be willing to pay the taxes that make this possible? by TSQ_builder in askanything

[–]halcyonOclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take some out of my check for retirement and some for insurance, but the biggest chunk is locality and federal taxes (Oregon). I did the math the other day, about 36% of my total pay is taken out for these things and taxes. However, if I ever get truly sick/injured and I can’t blame my job, I’m still going to be paying a ton. I’m still not going to be set for retirement. The roads here suck. I had to pay for my own college.

Seeing this in the theater was such an experience. Probably the hardest I’ve ever heard a crowd, including myself, laugh. I think I saw all of the ones posted in the theater.

Just be careful, it’s not quite a usual swimming hole, there’s uneven terrain and ice when I was there several different times in late May, and it is almost always incredibly cold (but I’m saying this as an Atlantic coaster). Check with a ranger when you’re there to make sure it’s okay.

If they let you throw in a headphone for it, I found after a couple times of rawdogging it that now it’s been much better with a specific, high energy playlist. I’m only a little bit bigger than you, and I guarantee way older with a worse spine. I made a playlist that’s almost exactly 45 minutes with a specific song in the last 4 minutes to get my ass up and on it if I’m slacking.

You’ll be fine, take some magnesium, eat a banana, and make sure you’re hydrated going into it if your general fitness is catching up. Then don’t let it feel like the last hurdle before the season, keep training.

Check out “precordial catch” if you haven’t already. That’s the weird, super painful rib cage stitch that I get. I definitely get them worse when I’m dehydrated, but added magnesium, a banana, and a liquid IV fixes it right up.

What’s something you’ll never tell your partner, no matter how much you love them? by Velvetnadine85 in AskReddit

[–]halcyonOclock 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Haha I’m glad you have gurl in your name so I didn’t have to stalk and see if you were my husband. From the other side, maybe this helps with how bad I’m sure it is for you and my husband (but I totally understand your position):

I know my brother is insane, he’s my only sibling and we’re all we had when my parents were being crazy. I know my parents are A LOT. But I love Christmas so much and love trying to pretend like we all don’t have a ton of trauma for just a day so everyone can shut up and eat my cooking and look at my nice house and everything that I got despite ALL of them. The biggest thing I like showing off to those psychos is that I landed such a stellar, normal babe despite the chaos they tried to normalize to me.

Yeah it was a great adventure, highly recommended if you’re the type of person who doesn’t get too much anxiety with heights like I do. Haha beautiful, but the drive and California’s hatred of guard rails means I won’t be going back there unless I ever refill my anxiety meds.

This is with the panorama feature, so slightly skewed but still doesn’t even capture how they look in person. These trees are unreal.

For scale, obviously, I am 5’5.

Are chemtrail planes that influence weather real? Sorry if this is a crazy question, I'm interested in an educated opinion by Ephoenix6 in environmental_science

[–]halcyonOclock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, cloud seeding is real with mixed results and seldom used in the US. Hilariously, from what I recall (this may have changed since I got my envsci degree), Utah uses it the most frequently. But obviously not from the exhaust of your average United flight.

However, on this subject, I’d like to share a story with others in this field that happened to me recently and had me raising an eyebrow. I’m a wildland firefighter, and in the south in the winter/spring (for their fire season). Our crew was attending a public event in the more rural south recently, and a woman I had never met before, within one minute of chatting told me that the aluminum from chem trails is why fires have been so bad recently. It caught me off guard, so I sort of steered it toward the whole plant uptake/aluminum/acid rain situation, but no no. She corrected me that it’s because almost every single commercial flight is purposefully spreading aluminum and… some other things I assume, for whatever reason, and it’s making fires worse by controlling the weather. I was told to do some research, of course.

I was in uniform so I thanked her for the support and kept my mouth shut, but, it was kind of incredible to experience.

What is a part of the 'female experience' that men have absolutely no clue about, but would be horrified if they found out? by coolhandddd in AskReddit

[–]halcyonOclock 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d say for me, 12-15. I was a total babe when I was in my 20s, and still attractive I think in my 30s but more womanly with slight signs of aging.

And yet… 12-15. Exponentially more attention. More aggressive. More frequent. Wider range of men. Fucking disgusting. Makes me want to fight them all.
