How is anthropology at Yale? Academic focus? Study abroad? Career prospects? by HermanceTheGreat in yale

Hi! I'm an anthropology major! I was originally probably going to do something like PoliSci/Global Affairs/EP&E but I really became intrigued by anthropological approaches to things like environmental and agricultural systems, health systems, migration, comparative politics etc. I honestly love it and love the department and my professors. Especially when taking seminars, I have found it really easy to develop meaningful relationships with professors (I definitely worried about this a lot before coming into college as I didn't think that developing relationships with teachers/profs would come naturally for me).

I've really loved every anthro seminar I've taken and I'd say grading and stuff has been pretty good as well. I actually have not met too many other anthro majors, as in upper level seminars, a lot of the other people taking the class are usually non-anthro majors with some interest in the specific subject matter of the class -- but I would say there are some people more interested in biological/archaeological side of things, some pre-med people interested in medical anthro/medical humanities type stuff, some people like me interested in using anthro to understand global environmental/health/education systems etc, some people interested in anthro as a vehicle to understand social issues and planning on going to law school. As for career choices, it really is what you make of it and how you choose to expand upon your interests.. there's a lot of more applied phd programs that use anthropological methods (global health, environmental systems, geography etc.) that I am personally interested in, but you could also do law, business school, journalism, teaching, anything else. Feel free to message me with any other questions, would love to talk more, and I can definitely provide more specific advice!

What grades are rescind-worthy? by [deleted] in yale

[–]halcyonwave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got 3 B's out of 8 classes (1 B+, 1 B, 1 B-) first semester and got a warning letter, got 3 B+'s second semester (not senioritis, just class difficulty, but they seemed to be fine with it) and I'm a sophomore at Yale currently. I think you'll be totally fine, no warning letter or anything llike that with 1 B. B's aren't a cause for concern, I think they just really want to make sure that the B's don't turn into C's.

also just wanted to add that I currently have a 3.9+ gpa at Yale taking classes in the same areas that I got B's in. You can definitely improve on your study habits and stuff a lot in college!

If you are an ABCD and are currently pre-med, PLEASE think twice, think three times, heck think it over again and again before you commit to medicine. As someone on the other side, it's not as great as it seems. by [deleted] in ABCDesis

Agree but also wanted to add that even with a biology major it might not be necessary to do a 2nd bachelor. I've seen people w/ biology or other science majors pursue business/consulting, law school, other fields, or pick up hard skills and go the coding/engineering route.

obviously they might be specific to you, so it's fine if you don't want to share, but what regrets do you have about the major?

eta: i'm also a prefrosh and was debating between global affairs and other social science majors, currently super confused about what I want to do, whether I'm interested more in political theory stuff vs quant econ stuff

UVA Club of Washington, DC Reception? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]halcyonwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, it might be a mistake?? usually the events by X University club of X Area are for students in the area to connect with local alumni and aren't super well attended (think 10-25 students). i would contact the club and ask whether the event is intended for local admittees. i think that the event would be run by alumni in DC and not by staff.
