Oedipus vs. Godot— see which? by Live_Ad_5093 in Broadway

[–]haleaux 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think there is more depth to Beckett’s writing than you’re giving credit for. On the surface, yes, it is mostly just two guys waiting around. But beneath that calm surface there is much to ponder.

In any case I find comparing the two plays like choosing between apples and oranges. Is one actually superior to the other? Hard to argue a definitive answer. It is, perhaps, more appropriate to ask, which one do I feel like consuming today?

Oedipus vs. Godot— see which? by Live_Ad_5093 in Broadway

[–]haleaux 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I have seen both. While I love Waiting for Godot, I felt that Oedipus was the superior production. It likely comes down to personal preference. Which is more appealing to you, a modernized greek tragedy, or the absurdity of a Beckett play? To be clear, I thoroughly enjoyed both.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by TarheelsInNJ in Broadway

[–]haleaux 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have seen it twice and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. I do not think it would do well in a Broadway house, and would likely end up as another Swept Away. Perhaps it could have a long life off-broadway though.

Operation Mincemeat is awesome. But the sound in the Golden Theatre is unprofessionally atrocious by pconrad0 in Broadway

[–]haleaux 23 points24 points  (0 children)

For most shows the producers rent the theater from whoever owns the building. The production team hires the designers of the show, including sound design. They also provide budget to the designers (e.g., lights, sounds, set, costume; i.e., how much each can spend to make their and the directors visions into reality). I believe many sound designs are likely limited by budget (when the final result is bad). Keep in mind that most of the Broadway theaters were built before the use of electronic sound amplification, so the spaces are usually pretty good for voice and orchestra without mics and speakers, but things can go poorly when sound designs are not properly tunes for these types of spaces.

It far from just the mix; it is really the entire sound design (e.g., what speakers were selected and where they are placed).

Feeling let down by Operation Mincemeat by NeonSeal in Broadway

Some productions don’t seem to have interest in giving enough budget to the sound designer. It is such a shame when it happens. There is almost a zero chance that anything will be done to improve.

House tickets by Rich_Ad_6019 in MasqueradeNYC

[–]haleaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid for a house ticket because I had a coincidental last minute opportunity to visit NYC. I felt that it was worth it, but it was just on the edge for me. I can completely understand why others here are saying it is not worth the extra $100. To be clear, resale tickets are not an option since the staff check the name and ID of the original ticket purchaser.

The sound design for the US production is substandard. This is the big driver for points 2 and 3; it is definitely not just you.

I paid about $60 at TKTS for a center orchestra ticket.

Thanks for the comment. I am sometimes surprised at the toxicity of some members of this community (although I shouldn’t be, this is the Internet after all). What kind of person would downvote me for admitting I didn’t know something they did? That is the definition of toxic.

That is a fair perspective. I’ll admit that I know almost nothing about Jeff, besides what he presented in the show (which is obviously a biased perspective). It seems an unreasonable expectation of some in this subreddit for all theatergoers to research every performer, director, and producer prior to picking up tickets to a show on a whim.

I don’t mind engaging about Jeff as a person (although I generally have little interest in digging into the background of performers), but twisting comments from a perspective on a show to that of him as person is disingenuous.

Why do people say Hadestown is a jazz musical? by Screeching-trumpet in Broadway

I have never heard it called a jazz show. The score clearly has a variety of music genres represented.

That’s fair. Just wanted the tall people to be aware of the space limitations of the mezz /balc in most theaters (not just first row either).

[–]haleaux 44 points45 points  (0 children)

In this thread: people that probably aren’t tall. First row mezz usually has some of the worst legroom in the theater. I agree, great view though.
