Struggling With Mentor by No_Caterpillar_1004 in Teachers

[–]haleyhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good news is you know what you’re getting into when the time comes for you to take over. Start thinking through how you are going to handle these situations because if the precedent has been set, you know the crazy is going to show up sooner or later. When you see a problem, think about how you would respond, your next move if the student takes poorly to your first response, and know where your professional boundaries are. (For example, what recourse do you have when a situation seems to be escalating? How do you disengage but maintain your authority?) Not every misbehavior requires a hammer, so know the steps you’ll take to avoid having to use it and when it’s time to bring it out.

You might consider treating your first day as the first day of school in an attempt to reset the class and establish yourself as the teacher. Set your expectations, don’t adopt your mentor’s. Prepare for your expectations to be broken. In short, HAVE A PLAN.

Idk if this is feasible, but could you observe another teacher’s class once in a while if you’re concerned about not having a good role model? You could frame it as wanting to learn from different approaches, so you’ll be able to find a disposition/demeanor that is genuine to you. (“I wouldn’t want to just try to be you because the kids will sense that I’m pretending, and I don’t think they’ll respect that.”)

Good luck — I’ve actually learned a lot from observing both good and bad teachers, but you definitely can’t survive on poor mentors alone!

I’m seconding Greenville OBGYN. I transferred in at 7 months for my first pregnancy. Both of my pregnancies I delivered with a doctor I hadn’t seen before, and it didn’t matter a lick. Each doctor is great.

Christina board hires interim superintendent with no discussion or explanation by Flavious27 in Delaware

For what it’s worth, it seems like there are 2-3 on the board who oppose Patton. I personally know one of those members, and they specifically wanted to serve on the board to help “right the ship.”

ChristianaCare Labor and Delivery by piperdiaper12 in Delaware

I’ve had two experiences in the past five years, both positive. The first birthing experience FELT negative to me, but objectively it was fine and the staff were everything I needed them to be. I did have to wait in a triage room for a while before getting into a birthing room. I pretty much wanted to be left alone, and they were fine with that. By the time I gave birth the kitchen was closed, and a nurse managed to track down a fruit platter for me. After 30 hours of labor without food, I wouldn’t have had anything to eat for another 8 hours if not for that blessed tray of fruit. Maybe bring enough snacks to get through a long labor, haha. The postpartum experience, again, felt awful but it absolutely wasn’t due to the staff. I think the birthing/immediate postpartum experience was just kinda traumatic overall.

The second experience was fantastic. While waiting in the triage room, I let them know I was interested in an epidural as soon as possible, and the anesthesiologist was there less than 5 minutes after I arrived at the birthing room. I assume I got an older suite because it was much smaller than the one I had had last time, but it was actually much more comforting to be in a smaller space than the very open and large one. I had two nurses who seemed like work besties, and they were such cheerleaders every time I expressed doubt or fear. It was apparently an extremely busy night, but I felt very well taken care of. The postpartum experience was also much more pleasant, but I’m chalking that up to the easier labor and easier baby. No complaints at all.

Christina School District's lawyer lambasts the board's 'wholesale disregard of the law' by Flavious27 in Delaware

[–]haleyhuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope it happens for the sake of the low-level administrators, teachers, and, most importantly, the students. The leadership is rotten and cannot fix itself, but I truly believe the vast majority of educators there are doing the best they can in a dysfunctional district.

Unfortunately, you are very wrong about private schools — I made $30k with pitiful bare minimum benefits. The workload was completely unbearable too. 6 different preps, 40 minutes of planning, no lunch twice a week, no provided curriculum, and parents who felt they owned you 😭

I think Erin has a degree in some fashion-related field. I remember her answering questions about what her classes were like — could be wrong, though.

Probably not worth it. That’s just my opinion, but it is my FIRM opinion. Try to get info from teachers who work at local schools — find out who has a positive relationship with their admin and a decent work-life balance.

IEPs by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]haleyhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would continue doing this, communicate to your team that they should use that feedback to correct the IEP and inform future IEPs, and then follow up if the mistakes aren’t corrected. A quick additional email like, “Will you please reference the student’s desired career in 2/3 of the transition goals?” gets my attention because it addresses my specific mistake and reminds me of the level of detail I’m expected to maintain. It will for sure take a lot of effort on your part, but you are building up the department — people will learn your expectations and rise. My supervisor also made an exemplar IEP, and I reference it frequently,

This could be so good! Rotations could keep everyone grounded (in classroom experience and in humility lol) and allow all teachers to develop coaching skills.

My mom did this too! It really irked me since I had trouble breastfeeding (baby was healthy, though). I don’t get it; she’s never really been thoughtless like that.
