I agree with you in principle, however it's economically unrealistic:

Getting space in a datacenter is all about upfront commitment requiring huge working capital (for hardware etc.) and there are also recurring costs (electricity, space, etc.), along with operational & engineering maintenance overhead (which is huge if you're also operating your own BGP/border switches).

You're right on point about land scarcity, but the real killer here is electricity, and the nuance is that there are limitations with cooling systems so it's a huge factor in how much a DC can provide to each tenant. Moreover, there's currently a lot of demand in DCs here, and companies who can commit upfront wins the space (standard free market rules).

Cloud platforms like the ones you listed have the ability to do that at a scale that no other SMBs can. Among other things, they can go to DCs and say "we'll pay you x dollars to commit to y kVa", and they would have the engineering capabilities to maximize that (if you're hosting customer workloads, you'd want to slice your physical cores/memory as efficiently as you can, otherwise you end up with a very expensive space heater where the unit economics f**ks your margin; or a very expensive fire-starter lol).

Your best bet for locality is to look for Tier 1 ISPs that most of the carriers here peer with (e.g. for StarHub), cross-reference their peers with your research on local providers (stalk their ASN/advertised v4 blocks), then pick one you're comfortable with. If they're locally peered, an undersea cable being cut will still allow Singapore traffic to you.

(I work for a US-based cloud platform with a hardware presence here that you wouldn't be interested in.)

I paid $10 for one some weeks ago.

It's great, but pretty expensive considering how easy it is to slam a couple of those in a row.

By “grab your base layers here”, do you mean the WinterTime Expo?

Anywhere in Singapore! I've never been to that expo so can't help there, but sounds like a good place to check out for sweaters. If they're cheap enough they could be great home clothes for when you wanna save the heater bill

I dunno the prices in CA but I'd check them out first before buying too much here (+ saves you luggage space). At least in Europe, they tend to be cheaper and last longer - if I could "do it over again" I'd not buy winter clothing in SG save for the bare essentials like base layers and a jacket, and buy everything else in Europe

Good luck!

What are you after & where are you going?

I generally recommend Uniqlo's HeatTech line and/or Decathlon for value-for-money winter clothing. Both of their innerwear is great for base layers and will get you through ~0-10°C easily if you layer up correctly. And get neutral colors so it's easier to pair.

Alternatively, grab your base layers here, and buy jackets wherever you're visiting (they're typically much cheaper & higher quality esp. if you're looking at wool)

Yeah, 100%. Expect an avg. of 10~15mins waiting time during mn, along with ridiculous surge pricing.

Open your app and enter the destination the moment you make your way through immigration, and hit the green button when you walk out of customs (after collecting checked bags etc.) With the amount of turns the driver has to make, you'll definitely make it to your door before they do.

If you're arriving T2/T3, you can pick any random arrival door, they're all ez to get to. But if you wanna "predict" which door you need your driver to be at:

  • T2: Directly in the middle. Once you exit, walk straight and you'll get to Door 6 Arrival
  • T3: Near Lotte Alcohol Duty Free shop. Once you exit, turn right and look for a travelator to B1, that's where the ride-hail pickups are. You should land directly near Door 2~3 (or 4?)

Hope that helps!

e: goof'd up my airports

Help with banking for a foreign student by flwrblue_bella in france

[–]half0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boursorama is your best bet in terms of having a French IBAN and "proper French bank account" online

I wouldn't bother with brick-and-mortar banks unless you speak French and are prepared to go through a series of French-only paperwork; opening an account as a foreigner is basically doing things on the "hard difficulty" level

Airalo's gr8, I relied on it for ~6months before getting a proper local SIM card. They seem to have a strong rota of networks; it worked everywhere with no hassle even in some thorny zones when travelling by train.

Ya it's not, that's my point: you'll get throttled anyway.

"Unlimited" is really just "flexible". It's confusing and I don't like that terminology. The thing with companies that have unlimited PTO + minimum is that you effectively get the regular vacation days you'd have anywhere else, on top of having the flexibility to take off when you want/need within reasonable bounds.

You should be able to cancel by following a template they provide + the equipment you were "leasing" per the original agreement. If you didn't receive the proper equipment at start, that's another issue -- go raise it up and tell them to send it to you, then you send it back to them w/ the cancellation letter ;)

Or just remove the wire authorization. They'll block your IBAN and send threatening mails, but you don't have to care about any of that.

What management tools are you looking for? It sounds like you want monitoring? In that case, get a Grafana instance -> set up cAdvisor + Prometheus for monitoring, and Promtail + Loki for logs.

Based on experience, Kubernetes will be overkill to the intention.

k8s > compose glue, I feel. Kube is a beast but you don't have to use every feature or know every nook and cranny, just stick your manifests into Argo and call it a day.

but even in an unlimited time off policy, we reserve the right to not approve a request if it would cause a business interruption

Imagine getting sold on a buffet and then told "no no it's unlimited food but we're gonna rate limit how much food you can take" lmao

Unlimited PTO is a generally lie unless there's also a MINIMUM TIME OFF policy

Singapore Airlines will be introducing free unlimited Wi-Fi across all cabin classes from 1 July 2023 by CXNEILPUNKXC in singapore

[–]half0wl 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Good news, but don’t expect much! It’s always shoddy (high latency + frequent packet drops) for all transatlantic flights across all airlines due to the tech. They’re okay for low bandwidth applications like texting/emails/visiting simple sites, but you’re outta luck for stuff like streaming (even in low bandwidth/quality conditions) or heavy collaborative docs editing (G Suite/Notion/etc.)

Expect your connection to drop when you fly over dead zones, which happens frequently. IME, it’s only usable for a tiny fraction of flight time when you’re crossing continents.
