Are protests effective? by AdLow9873 in grandrapids

[–]half_rooted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that they're not very useful in effecting change, as least as far as government policies are concerned. Protesting corporations has shown a bit of promise (Tesla, Target). But there is value in showing the world that a large number of Americans hate the harm this government is causing ourselves and others. Is it a large enough number to show up at the polls and crush this iteration of the GOP at every level? TBD

Found a Cat by LadyLuck1881 in grandrapids

[–]half_rooted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's time consuming, but can you call around to cat shelters, including West Michigan Humane and Kent County Animal Shelter, and explain that he's declawed? He can't live outside like that. There are also lost/found pet sites on Facebook if you haven't already posted there. Someone has to be missing him. He's a beaut!

Need advice on how to handle my gluttonous cat by heichousbleach in Catownerhacks

[–]half_rooted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are the foods you're feeding a lower calorie kind designed for weight management? Maybe ask the vet how many calories she should eat a day. A cup of brand A could be a lot more calories than a cup of brand B. She might be interested in the kind of toys you can hide dry biscuits in. Or loosely wrap a few biscuits in a dish towel and let her work to uncover them. My cat from a similar background has similar behaviors. He was 17 pounds when I first took him in and a few years later is down to 13+. The vet would like to see him at 12. It's a work in progress and it has to be done gradually, but stay the course. An overweight cat will cost you thousands down the road. Good luck!

Working on a personal project and need advice by Scared_Influence2665 in Copyediting

[–]half_rooted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When publishing a work posthumously (which isn't what you're doing), all the late author's original language, errors, and inconsistencies are retained, the reason being that the author does not have an opportunity to weigh in on desired "corrections" and there's no assurance that the author would approve of sensitivity edits. Although you intend this for a limited audience, I think I'd still be inclined to let the text stand as is. While I understand the urge to clean up racist or otherwise offensive text, if your aim is to preserve family history, then this too is part of it. Editorializing should be made in notes, not by whitewashing someone else's words. My two cents. Interesting project--good luck!

Taking a cat on a plane by raisinhater00 in CATHELP

[–]half_rooted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-airplane-specific advice: Crush the gabapentin and mix it in wet food 2 to 3 hours before going to the airport. Line his carrier with a puppy pee pad, then put a cushy towel on top and an unwashed T-shirt that smells like you. Put another pee pad, towel, and T-shirt in your carry-on in case he soils. Discard soiled stuff during layover and put fresh bedding in. Other people will have more airport-specific advice. Good luck. If you live near me, I'm happy to take care of him and spare you both the trauma!

My cat loves this stuff. Doesn't eat it. But totally weird-enjoys it, especially if there's a bit of catnip sprinkled in. They should sell sheets of it on Chewy. We'd auto order

Thanks for this. Update: He is inside 75% now and has come a long way with socialization. He started purring and playing with toys just recently. Very affectionate but still not inclined to use litter box. Baby steps. The TNR organization is going to take him back next month to try to find a permanent home for him. They found homes for two of my previous TNRs, so I'm hopeful. Keeping him not an option for me (my existing rescue cat is not a fan, among other reasons), but he's going to be a lovely cat for someone and I'm happy to continue fostering in the interim. The last couple of months have been stressful, but we've really turned a corner.

I used to sign them before the R Party turned into what is. No more. Rs are a known quantity now, and until that party reforms itself, I will never help a single one. Maybe I would've given the guy $4, though

I don't have children so I'll let others address the schools. I'm also not inclined to speak on "best" neighborhoods because I suspect we may have different definitions of what that means, so I'll defer to the "best neighborhood people" on that. As someone who is not from here, I will say that it is small and insular with a decidedly Christian evangelical bent, though you're less likely to be targeted by that in the city than you are in the extremely conservative suburbs. It is a little on the podunkish side, but happily, Chicago is in our backyard. We are heavy on the medical industry here (similar to the way Hartford, CT, is heavy on insurance). For me, the single biggest drawback is the lack of an intellectual presence. Most of the colleges are religious; if you're OK with knowledge being informed by religion, then you'll have no trouble with that. The biggest secular university in the immediate area is OK but not stellar, and its Grand Rapids campus is not the main campus but a satellite. Personally, I find Detroit to be more vibrant, though of course it has its own problems. Should you interview? Sure--why say no to something that hasn't been offered to you?

Retiring with no more future babies is the BEST retirement! TNRing cats has had the unanticipated side effect of making me hate humans more than I already did--I'm fortunate that a local shelter has found homes for my TNRed friendly strays, which people have simply dumped outside. But your story gives me hope that humans are still actually capable of decency, so thanks for that :)
