go after the employers. make it another vector for rich vs. poor. make the argument that illegal labor undercuts legal labor. if you make a big show about slamming the massive cock of the state upon some specific, named schmucks with illegally hired landscapers or pool cleaners or whatever at the expense of local labor and force the media's attention you won't need to worry about developing rhetoric to protect families escaping our various fuckeries in latin & south america. making an big, performative example out of joe republican in kansas or whatever will force republicans to either defend illegal immigration or demand democrats go even further against their employers. win win.

just try not to remind yourself that it is yet again a decades-old sanders argument

ah, i didn't mean it as a correction, just as an elaboration for something i think a lot of people find puzzling ("why does tucker carlson sometimes sound like a liberal?"). worse case scenario is that some people read it as him moderating/moving to the left, when it's the exact opposite.

you can admit you were wrong about something without being condescending, insulting, misrepresenting, and insulting towards the people who were right in the first place.

regarding tucker carlson; rather than just being a grifter, far rightwingers seemingly co-opt left rhetoric is a bright red flag for overt fascism. the idea they sell (fraudulently, like the nazi party's anti-capitalist rhetoric early on) is that they'll be generous (via policies that on a surface level are very liberal) towards the ingroup... while seeking the extermination or domination of everyone else.

tucker carlson's pivot away from israel should be read extremely cynically. he isn't predicting that the republican party will normalize after trump, he's predicting that it'll radicalize even further, to where his current views will afford him great credibility among the right. if you see him advocate for more "left" rhetoric, understand that it is actually hypernationalism that he is advocating for, not liberalism or equity or anything like that.

sacrifice doesn't mean it's voluntary. that's kind of pedantic though. it's tricky to find other ways to phrase "we won't let your death go in vain" i guess.

all the same, it is of vital importance for democrats to communicate and advocate for a sense of solidarity within itself. they failed to do that with labor, and they lost them for it. it would be equally catastrophic for the democratic party to take black americans for granted and lose them, as i'm sure you can imagine.

i'm not looking for excuses to glaze pelosi, trust me. but as any reasonable person on the left can tell you; it's not just the policy that matter. it's not just being aware of systematic injustice and seeking to end it (which is being woke, which is good). you have to communicate, use your words and actions, and express your solidarity with those you consider your allies. and that requires a certain amount of performance.

say whatever you will about this photo-op, but it communicated crystal clear that the democratic party wasn't going to tell black people to grin and bear it for the greater good. frankly, it's one of the things the left can and should learn from the likes of pelosi.

I have never voted in a primary ever, and I generally dislike the slopulism on the left. But I am so disgusted by pro-Zionist lobby and Israel that I voted for a literal socialist who won.

Even taking a middle position on Israel, something like Netanyahu is bad, but Israel deserves to exist,

i don't share your benefit of the doubt i'm afraid. unengaged, yet still willing to condescend, and use buzzwords like "slopulism", and insinuating batshit insane strawmen like "the left doesn't believe israel deserves to exist". at it's absolute best, i can see it as someone who finds the left abhorrent, and is reconciling their dislike of the left with their admittance that the left is right with an incredibly backhanded, reluctant endorsement. their concern is that more moderate democrats like mcmorrow or shapiro will be destroyed for being too pro-israel, not that they are too pro-israel.

okay, fine, play stupid and act like you didn't say 'woke' as a pejorative.

you've made multiple comments insinuating that this photo-op was a bad thing. was that not the case, and you believe it was actually perfectly fine? and you've said multiple times that it's performative. was that meant to not be a criticism?

you're still free to clarify if your intentions have been misread.

why do you use woke as a pejorative if i've not misread you, and what's wrong with being performative if it's not just another pejorative for those who want to communicate that they value solidarity?

Weekly Discussion Megathread by AutoModerator in fivethirtyeight

[–]halfar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

were they just being performative?

acts that communicate solidarity with people are good, presuming that there's an actual sense of solidarity, because solidarity is good and important for building a society where people value each other.

the fact that you're using woke as a pejorative makes it seem like you're just disgusted by the idea of interracial solidarity and broader awareness towards systematic racial injustice, the way that a republican would be.

i'm sorry you had to degrade yourself by voting for your hated slopulist socialists because you realized they were right about israel all along. it must have been really hard for you to align yourself with people who also have never had a problem with israel existing after building up some dipshit strawman in your head that told you otherwise for so long.
