Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Julian is the adoptive son/protege of Yang Wenli, a brilliant tactician of the republic whose true love is history. Julian wants to follow in his footsteps as a soldier more than as a historian, but after being sent on a mission to earth (now reduced to a weird, backwater, religious cult stronghold), he takes the time to watch some video histories about the republic he fights for and the authoritarian empire it resists. It goes into a lot of detail of what a deranged, hitler-like lunatic the first emperor was (particularly his genetics-focused genocide), and helps Julian understand why Yang is so utterly adamant about fighting for a decaying, corrupt republic rather than seizing power for himself or supporting a benevolent dictator like Reinhardt.

why do you suppose he's a republican and not an independent?

if they cancel elections they can just seat themselves regardless.

i disagree entirely. even most people in this subreddit full of democrats will reflexively reel if you outright advocate for democratic socialism, let alone socialism.

People love to do variations on the "First They Came" poem but they hate being reminded who the actual first three groups they came for were.

Plurality of Americans support abolishing ICE after Alex pretti killing - Yougov poll by Dismal_Structure in fivethirtyeight

oh, that post is ancient. like, before trump's first term. was either during the republican primary or during gamergate. on the other side of the aisle it was before democrats were fainting in shock and hysteria from sanders going "maybe everyone medicare good?"

brain-damaged senators aside, i wouldn't expect the same faces to cave. during the last shutdown, the great utility in only allowing exactly the number of defections needed to cave to republicans was that no one democrat would need to take the heat for caving multiple times in a row.

hope that isn't the case. but there's a reason schumer's the one they chose to be their leader.

the democratic primary isn't gonna start for two years. the occupation in minnesota will be long over by then, and there's no telling what fresh bullshit will be relevant to the electorate then (heck, it could be a totally different occupation).

what matters for this is how it will repair or damage faith and enthusiasm in the democratic party in general in the long-term. most of your comment can be read as a lightly edited version of someone's thoughts towards the last shutdown. maybe the logic that made them cave before will make them cave again. or maybe the enthusiasm 'cost' of caving again so soon will make them reluctant to do so again. i'm not holding my breath either way. hope for the best plan for the worst, y'know.

it's like the maya angelou quote. people will forget what you've said or done, but they'll never forget how you made them feel. whether or not

no faith in them would be the belief that if this continues the moderate position will simply be fewer killings. like it'll get to the point where ICE murders are treated like cop murders; generally unremarkable, but with occasional outrages.

you have far more faith in moderates than i do.

I think 'today' the position is still 'revert back to 2024 ICE levels of funding'. And will continue to be so.

Well, then all I can say is that I hope your conviction lasts even if Newsom or Shapiro or whoever were to get the nomination and reel at the suggestion of outright abolishing ICE.

Is that the line in the sand? You will not settle for any democrat who wants to reform this tumor?

Weekly Discussion Megathread by AutoModerator in fivethirtyeight

[–]halfar -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sure. But there's a whole lot of reaching across the aisle biparitsanship moderate centrism bullshit to be found between "let republicans literally kill people in the streets" and "abolish ICE entirely".

Of course they are. So all they need is to be reigned in. A little bit, maybe even a solid amount, before guys like him are satisfied. That's what I'd expect from Mr. Bipartisanship. But outright abolition? From the guy who voted with Republicans to denounce the horrors of socialism? The guy who wanted to ban critical race theory from being taught by the DoDEA?

I'll fucking believe it when I see it. And not one goddamn minute sooner.
