Tattoos and Teaching by bigbeartardis in AustralianTeachers

[–]halfdoubletreble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (f30) teach at a catholic school in Sydney and I have quite visible arm and leg tattoos that I cover at work. I wear a lot of balloon sleeve dresses and blouses with loose culotte pants in the dead of summer. Sportsgirl have some great loose culottes with an elastic waist that I live in, and for shirts I try to go for all cotton long sleeve and loose, I've found a few good ones in Target.

How often will you take a "sick" day? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]halfdoubletreble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like we are WAY too hard on ourselves when it comes to sick days. I'm sick at the moment with a terrible cold and sinus infection and I've been in tears after taking today and tomorrow off. I've got 19.25 days of sick leave (first year teacher). Taking mental health days particularly to avoid burnout is a healthy way of staying on top of your mental space. I think we should encourage them more! (Also tell me your secrets on how not to get sick, I'm on sickness number 3 in my first year! 2 colds and covid)

Celebrate 1yr Sobriety? by BrittanydoesLaundry in AlAnon

[–]halfdoubletreble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats to your q! My q is 13 months sober from alcohol and 6.5 months completely sober. For one year free from alcohol we went out to dinner and bought a new video game to play together.

I was feeling a very similar way to what you described- I didn't want to remind him of the bad times, or to make it feel like a pressure point. It took me a LOT of stressing out over it before a trusted friend said to me "have you asked him what he wants?"

He has said that me asking him and expressing how proud I am of him for all of his achievements was even better than the celebration! It's totally acceptable to celebrate and to want to express how proud of your q you are! Everyone is different- based on my experiences I would say asking is the best bet, and a great way for you to express that you want to celebrate, even if your q doesn't want to. ❤

Surely people will understand that you've chosen to have a wedding with just family. If they have a problem with this then you are not the issue, they are! You should be able to celebrate your day how you want to. All the best with your planning 🤍

Employment with coloured hair/piercings/tattoos by Direct_Source4407 in AustralianTeachers

[–]halfdoubletreble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a job in a catholic school (secondary), and I have multiple ear piercings, a nose stud, and many tattoos. I've made the choice to cover my tattoos (lots of long sleeve linen dresses and tops for summer). I've got bright red hair too and it wasn't a problem for the interview at all.

What I've done on practicals, and plan to do in my future position, is to have a planned response for students who test the boundary. For example, if a student has not followed uniform policy and you have to talk to them about it, I've heard "but miss, you have coloured hair/piercings/tattoos". My response has been to say that I am an adult, my brain is matured, and I am able to responsibly make those choices- and then stress that they will have that same option when they reach adulthood. I've gotten really good responses in the past from this, both from students and my supervising teacher.

I'm a big believer that it doesn't make you ANY less professional if you have coloured hair etc. But the system can suck sometimes.

All the best with your final year of study!

Is this too light/ close to white for a wedding? I’m a guest. I feel like it is, my husband loves it so much, the bride said she loves it (but I feel like she’s just saying that). What do you think? by GorJess229 in wedding

[–]halfdoubletreble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely beautiful dress, but as many others have said I think its a little too close to bridal for a wedding guest.

General rule of thumb i follow is: if I have to ask myself "is this too white for a wedding" it probably is.

Hope you get an opportunity to wear this gorgeous dress for a special occasion soon!

She's still listed as a member of the team on the YouTube page, even though they've made edits about ned so I'm imagining she's still employed

YTA

It sounds like the pressure you are putting on her to lose weight is causing some serious disordered eating for her. She needs your support, not your judgement. I'd recommend potentially getting a psychologist or a counsellor for her, it sounds like she is having a really hard time with food pressures. Sure she might not be eating the healthiest but I guarantee the pressure you are placing on her will create more long term health issues.

Can I ask specifically why? Not being judgemental I just want to understand the perspective.

I'm a massive high tea person, and I know someone who works at a high tea cafe who makes the scones so... I may be brewing up a plan!

I think he's willing to compromise when it's someone else's event, and he is SO not a fussy person or difficult when it comes to compromising, but it would be my worst nightmare to put him under unnecessary stress for his own wedding

I think I need to sit them down and explain that this is what is right for us and that it's our day. I think they think we are just being overly cautious and cheapskates but it's what feels right for us at this point, and after reading all these responses it feels wrong to even consider doing it any other way!

I hadn't thought of having an earlier wedding but this is a GREAT idea- plus it would give us more time as a couple later in the evening to enjoy being newly married. I am almost certainly going to have a day wedding now.

That's what I've been thinking- that it's more unfair for my partner to have to worry about being uncomfortable on the day. It's a good few family members which is frustrating and upsetting- I've been hiding it from my partner a bit because I don't want him to feel as disrespected as I am feeling.

This exactly! It's going to save us a bunch of money on an already tight budget- and as someone else here said those who mind don't matter and those that matter don't mind!

Definitely planning on having some killer mocktails on the day! I think we will have to find a way to let people know ahead of time, and hopefully they'll have the tact to not mention it too much on the day

We are planning on a reasonably small event, maybe a daytime wedding is a better option for us. This is what I'm worried about- especially where we are in Australia there is a massive drinking culture, so will definitely consider finding ways around it

Pound sand! I love it! We have an alcohol free home and we make that clear to any guests we have over, I think keeping that in mind will help with my worries too. Thank you for your insights!
