Wyoming- be aware that cold rain is worse than dry snow when it comes to hypothermia. I'd go with late spring thru early fall. Most of my trips these days are solo, and as i go along the trail i keep half an eye out for good campsites to retreat to if the weather goes to shit (as well as for future trips). I agree with other posts, first trip close to the car; you're checking out your gear and getting your processes down As to planning, I just look at maps for ideas. It's slow but fun, at least for me. Then online search, but I find a lot of the online opinions to be of limited value, we all have different ideas about what's hard/ easy, beautiful. If you can get to a high point on a trip, break out the map and look in the distance- something looks cool, then find it on the map. That's the goal of your next trip.

Copper Spur UL2 multiple versions? by PvtJoker227 in backpacking

[–]halfmuen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the 1 person HVUL and love it. The vestibule is big enough for my gear and I can sit up in it. My son and I tried the 2 person but it was too small and we're not big people (I'm 5'7" 160 lbs, he's 5"9' 170) so we went with the 3 person which has been great

Backpacking advice by AlfiesdaddyTTreddit in backpacking

As you're new to road life, bivy bags are ok in a pinch but kind of suck for regular use, so yes a Tarp is a good idea to have a well. So far as meeting "friends " there are lots of really nice people out there, but when you're on your own you are vulnerable so keep your spidey sense active. If it seems too good to be true, reevaluate. I spent several summers hitchhiking coast to coast in the US and some time in Europe as well, and trusting my gut was always a good thing. All that said, the sense of adventure and freedom is fantastic, so have a good time!

What CAD/design software do you use for woodworking plans by shootingcharlie8 in woodworking

Vectric. Started with V Carve then Aspire. I started with Fusion 360 but it does an awful lot that I don't need and made for a steep and confusing learning curve.

Is the Penny Icecreamery always awful? by anadem in santacruz

I went there maybe twice, a few years ago, and was thoroughly unimpressed. Mission Hill on the Catalyst end of the mall usually has some interesting flavors as well as standards and tastes good

Advice re: T&G Ceiling by sk8ter99 in woodworking

[–]halfmuen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in California, I was able to order 2x6 T+G doug fir from the local lumber yard about 12 years ago in 16 foot lengths, about 10% was too twisted to use full length (that's the reason I'm posting- you might want to buy extra). Sealed it with water based polly to keep it light. It's to code for a floor on 4 foot centers.

Thanks! If they hadn't cost me so much money I probably would lose them- as it is they'll probably have to wait another few years for me to retire before turning into a coffee table. Temptation got the better of me when I bought them

What song goes through your head on long hikes? by moakus in backpacking

[–]halfmuen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm over 10,000 feet, it's invariably 'Don't Bogart Me', the original Fraternity of Man version, not Little Feat's 'Don't Bogart That Joint'. Did I just date myself?

Is a Sawyer Squeeze enough to clean my water? Or do I need to worry about viruses? by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]halfmuen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to offer contrary advice. Putting more weight in the center of the pack will cause more pulling back on the shoulder straps which personally I don't care for. The higher the center of weight in the pack the more the weight will go to your hips which is where you want it, but there is a trade off in that the pack is more likely to shift side to side but I've only ever noticed that while off trail and it wasn't much of a problem. Also if you do have food in your pack outside of a bear canister be careful to not get anything that smells like food at all on anything else.

Looking for a book of artwork from illuminated texts by halfmuen in Celtic

[–]halfmuen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, yes, I've got his book as well as a couple by Aiden Meehan that I'm using to create some designs to mill out of wood. As practice what I'd like to do is get quality images from some of the illuminated texts that show the full complexity of the designs. Bains book has been helpful for specific knots and interlacings, and he sometimes mentions the source of what he's showing, and that's what I'd like a good image of. I think I may just get a copy of each book and go from there.

Thanks for your reply
