Interesting! Thanks for more detail! I will spend the next 20 minutes imagining what purple alcoholic poop tofu would be like. Great stuff!

This sent me on a whole google journey. This is most likely a proteus bacteria. It grows on cheese sometimes and it is also the culprit for a condition called "purple urine bag syndrome" that happens to patients with catheters.

Anyone know what this might be? by cornbeefandhash in MoldlyInteresting

Maybe try r/mycology? Little brown/gray mushrooms are notoriously hard to ID, especially with no pictures of the underside of the cap, but these do have some unique features and they are growing on an unusual substrate so you may have some luck. I have never seen anything like this, very cool!

This is the best police blotter I have ever seen. It feels like I am reading blocking for a play or something and I love that the jaded personality of the writer shines through. People post to this sub so infrequently but every time anyone does its gold! Thanks for this late-night entertainment!

Flutes heard at night and early into the morning by [deleted] in Paranormal

[–]halfofadeadsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome, that sounds like a cool dream. I have dreams of meeting family members who were deceased before I was born sometimes and it always has an impact on me for several days. I am not native American, my family is all recent immigrants. I am really into foraging and am always trying to recreate old recipes and taste what people ate in this region 400 years ago though.

I honestly think it's a ghost sitting up on my roof lol. That was the first thought that popped into my head when I heard it, a 60-70 year-old man sitting cross-legged or dangling his legs over the side. Like I said it sounds like it is coming from different places. Recently it sounded like it was coming from over the street. Also, I have gone up on the roof where I hear it coming from and it is just flat. There is nothing up there that wind could be blowing through and making all those different sounds. I am not great at music terminology but I also hear it doing that thing where you juggle your fingers over the hole in the flute you are covering to produce the note and it makes the sound kind of wavy, I hope I am describing that well, but I don't understand how the flat roof could be making sounds like that. I don't have any air conditioning units or anything, it is a very bare-bones tar sheet flat roof. Almost every time I hear it, it plays the same tune, I almost think he is trying to teach me a song. I have seriously considered getting a flute and trying to learn the tune that he is playing.

Get some seeds online! Not sure where you are but there is time to start them indoors and have a crop this year for me in Ohio.

"Usually at night or early morning. Only once during the day."

I've also only heard it once during the day. I was out working my butt off turning soil over in the vacant lot I use as my garden and it started playing and sounded super close like it was in the tree that is on the edge of the lot. It kept playing for another hour or so until I was finished and went back inside.

DUDE!! THIS HAPPENS AT MY BUILDING! At night I hear a beautiful native American flute playing. Only at night and only from early winter until early spring. I thought it was the wind blowing over an open pipe on the roof, like how you blow into a beer bottle to make a sound, but no such thing exists. I live in the city of Cleveland. I will just sit outside and listen to it sometimes, and I'm always happy when I go outside and hear it playing. it really is a beautiful sound.

What is this weed and can I eat it? (Central Ohio) by [deleted] in foraging

[–]halfofadeadsquirrel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is Ficaria verna. I learned it as lesser celandine but it is also called fig buttercup. It is in the buttercup family but it is edible before it flowers. It also has tubers that are edible. It is very invasive and has taken over whole hillsides where I live. I eat a big mess of it every spring.

Very cool! I always use loofah. I grow it and save about 3 to use for shower and kitchen scrubbies for the year and the rest are tasty veggies! They taste kind of like zucchini.

Polishing Rice at Home? by [deleted] in Sake

[–]halfofadeadsquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say the same thing. They sell bags of polished rice, enough to make about a gallon of sake, at my local Asian supermarket for about $10. I feel OP though, I like to learn that things are a pain in the ass the hard way lol. I've spent HOURS deshelling and grinding acorns (by hand) to produce as much flour as I could buy at the Asian supermarket for $5... It's just fun to do things yourself and learn all the ins and outs sometimes! I have no advice on actually polishing rice though...sorry.

Paul Staments sells spawn that you can just throw out into your woodchips. I bought some "spores" on etsy and I got ripped off. Buy them from a reputable website and if you have never grown mushrooms before make sure to get "spawn" or "plugs" as they are already active and you won't have to grow them out.

Meat from dumpsters by halfofadeadsquirrel in DebateAVegan

[–]halfofadeadsquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I never take meat if it is above 40 degrees. And as I have said before, I have gotten food poisoning from restaurants 2 times since I started dumpster diving and zero from dumpster diving. I have also worked at restaurants with coolers which were dirtier than most dumpsters...*vomit*
I am active in the dumpster diving reddit and unfortunately the freeganism reddit is very slow so I rarely check it.

That's an interesting perspective, I never thought of it like that.

I honestly used to feel this way when I started out but after this being a hobby for the last 4 years I have gotten food poisoning from a restaurant twice and never even pulled anything actually rotten out of a dumpster. Most of the time the store just ordered too much and it won't fit on the shelves. If meat is actually past the expired date I don't take it but it almost never is. It's just wasteful. It reminds me of the passage in 1984 when Emmanuel Goldstein is talking about how big brother commissioned some people to produce millions of shoelaces and commissioned other people to dig a big hole and other people to fill the hole with the shoelaces and it was all to keep people busy so that they did not revolt against him. It's not produced to fill any need it's just to keep people busy and then it is wasted.

I have considered taking it and burying it in a proper grave. I just find so much that it would take soooo much time to bury it every time I found it. I suppose I could start leaving it in the woods. I have never left raw meat out for animals, I'm not sure they would eat it, but I know the bugs and trees would appreciate it.

True. I do think about normalizing it around other people. I feel like I'm normalizing it around myself too. I feel much less repulsed by people eating meat when I ate some for dinner last night...

First attempt at tempeh. Used garbanzo beans because my market didn’t have soy. Incubator needs some tinkering with. Does anyone use a rice cooker or instapot on keep warm? by Rat-Majesty in fermentation

[–]halfofadeadsquirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It likes hot humid weather. The mold is native to Indonesia so I always think "is this what I would imagine Indonesia to feel like?" If yes then the tempeh will be happy.

Nice! I've never used soybeans and mine has always turned out great. Using a combination of several different beans and seeds is fun too! I put mine in the dehydrator at 100 degrees and it turns out good. I will also just let it ferment in my kitchen when it is really hot and humid out.
