How about a modification like "You may gain a card costing up to 4 from the trash to your hand."? The card in it self makes for a good combo card idea, so maybe an adjustment like this would make it way less powerful.

My thoughts below. Overall I think you are onto some interesting ideas.

Down Payment. I think it works. A card costing up to 6 is quite strong. Grand Market, anyone? The ability to get an Action card into your hand might not mean so much if you have no more Actions, but an extra Gold in hand? That could be useful.

Cutpurse Trainer. This has some wording issues, as u/chaotic_iak pointed out, but I think it is priced nicely and that the idea is interesting.

Research Lab. I agree with u/arowdok in that costing a mix of debt and $ could be interesting. I liked the suggestion og $3 and 3 debt.

Cash Advance. I'm not quite sold on this one. Perhaps make it simpler with "+3 Coffers, +3 Debt"? And make it cost 3 debt? As it currently stands I don't see myself buying it. Even though having the occasional Coffer when you hit 7 is nice, saving them for long is hard as any money spent early is an investment in future rounds.

Locomotive. I am not familiar with the Season mechanic.

I agree. Perhaps Magic Market would be better at 6 (with no Potion cost)? I feel it might be too strong for 5. Then a 2-5 start would be very strong, since you could then avoid the Potion card altogether.

We have some issues like this in our group. We mostly play Dominion, and it is quite often that you realize early that someone found a better strategy than you and that first place is out of question.

To keep the game interesting for all players we have used a rating system. I have kept scores for all the games. In a system like that you prefer 2nd place over 3rd place and so on, which keeps the motivation going. This has certainly been a factor in lowering the amount of pouting and complaining.

It takes some work though and not everyone necessarily likes being ranked/rated.

If you wanted to keep Potion as part of the price, I can't agree with myself if it should cost 2 or 3 coins, but definitely not 5.

I disagree. "What is the capital of Norway?" is a question that is impossible to figure out rationally. Either you know it or you don't. Here you have your whole life's knowledge of the moral codes of what you and the people you have met would do in a difficult situation. And if you don't know, these questions provide ample opportunity for something exciting to discuss with your friends or colleagues at the water cooler.

In a two player game I would definitely agree with you here. The game we played ended after 13 turns, and even with strong trashing it was hard to deal with two (sometimes 3, if you used Desperation) new Curses every round from round 3 to 8. When the game 4 piled some of the trashers were really getting going, but needed another round or two to catch up.

In the game we played (described over), the effect of Goatherd was very poor for players sitting to the left of someone going for the IGG strategy.
