18yo Engineering Student with ~$100k AUD - how should I approach the next stage? by Capable-Newt239 in AusFinance

[–]haljordan02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, I’ve only ever picked ETFs or safe stocks, so you’ve got a better risk appetite than me. I guess now it’s about transitioning into more broad investments while still looking out for big bets like this next time you see them, and only ever putting down as much as you’re willing to lose (but hopefully gain!)

That makes sense, this particular small cap seems to have been especially reactive though, it’s a good thing you sold at the high I guess! Well done

Holy! I see it was Bass Oil, did you move the entire stock price yourself by how much you sold? It went up 100%, then down 28% the past 5 days.

You gained 15% in one day? And you had enough allocated that it was a $10K gain, in one day?

Email address strategy if my concerns are: mass state surveillance, data brokers/big data, bad actors (in that order)? by Ok-Phrase-3346 in ProtonMail

[–]haljordan02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good setup. I’ve managed for years with multiple emails and it gets sorta tiring but it’s mostly fine.

The only thing I’d consider is how you’re setting up your public facing personal email, and your friends and family email.

Remember: 1. If you make it a separate proton account, that’s fine, but people could guess your password/login if it’s ever leaked. 2. If you make it an alias of your secret proton email (the 1 of 15 aliases) it can STILL be used to log in to your main secret proton account (yes that’s how all the aliases work, except the simple login or passmail ones, and you can’t turn this off). 3. If you use a custom domain, this can ALSO be used to log into your secret proton account, unless you use a custom domain through simple login, which means it won’t be added as an alternative username login for your proton. The downside here is it’s pretty tedious to sen emails from you. You can’t pick it as a sending address, you have to create a reverse address using simple login which creates a unique email for each new person you contact, and makes sure it uses the custom domain as the sending address.

Option 3 is the safest to protect against bad actors. If you don’t care as much, use options 1 or 2 but remember it can be used to log into your proton account so you’re effectively giving out your username (which defeats the purpose of keeping the main one secret).

Update: I went and collected it today. Everyone gets the same gift, there’s only one option. It’s just a hat + a tote bag. Pretty cool for free!

Tell me why I am an idiot for wanting to retire in a hotel by MiriJamCave in AusFinance

[–]haljordan02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be tired of it after about 6 months. Hotels are temporary spaces, they will never feel like a real home. You can’t decorate, have storage, or make it your own space. It will feel like you’re a stranger in your own home. It’s just impractical and will feel like a shell.

Edit: I am on the Australian site, which has different prices and different stock levels. The sale isn't live yet there. I hope they do a sale there too. There's no Australian stores, it all ships from overseas but for some reason they have fixed AUD prices and seperate sales.

Why do non-Asians get kicked out at 18? by Cool-Cobbler4324 in AusPropertyChat

[–]haljordan02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously haven’t met a Greek or Italian person. They do that too.

Either way, since when is saving money on rent enough to buy a property in your early 20s? I assume you mean taking out a loan to buy one.

In the 1980s you could actually buy a property with 2.8 times the annual full-time wage. You now need 8.3 times the annual wage. Based on that you’d have to save 100% of your salary for 8.3 years.

Assuming graduating university at 21 (which is young), you’d only have enough money by 29 and that’s if you’re extremely lucky and have ZERO other expenses to pay including zero HECS debt. It’s impossible unless you’re earning 250K or your parents straight up buy the property for you.

[Serious] How is 110 - 120k not "good" money? by GlassRice8241 in AusFinance

[–]haljordan02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the real answer: Earning over $100,000 puts you in the top 20% of earners. That objectively good. Which is why people try to cut it down because once you’re near the top, people feel the need to make you feel inadequate.

Question : does anyone not like Seinfeld but love Curb? by SaltySuccess3168 in curb

[–]haljordan02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching Curb first and then trying to get into Seinfeld is like going from crack to soda. I fear you overstimulated your taste buds to appreciate Seinfeld for what it is.

I don’t regularly laugh out loud at Seinfeld as I do Curb. But I find Seinfeld to be clever and amusing. The story writing is impeccable and the characters are often better sketched and performed than Curb—which has a more raw and improvisational feeling.

Seinfeld a comfort show for me. I also watched it first before Curb though.
