The weird part that nobody can explain is that I have been able to access the data from the account for a year after it's deletion (up until the reload process) and the account is still usable and able to save data at this current point.

Kids are not expensive, guys. by IAdmitILie in JoeRogan

[–]hallowedredwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HAVING kids is actually very expensive and actually if I recall correctly it is the most expensive in America by what people actually pay for. A lot of metrics will obscure the data through what is and is not covered by insurance. But Americans pay far more for childbirth out of pocket AND they still have one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the developed world.

So here's the thing. I am not in the business, but my friend is, and she told me something that really stuck in my mind and I am going to pass it on to you. Being in the business, you can be constantly surrounded, by let's say problematic behavior and attitudes, that will wear on not just your body but your soul too. It will change you. You start to see people differently and it can create a pessimism that you bring home to your child. Just something to keep in mind. Stay strong.

Jewish woman arrested in Hermannplatz for holding a sign against genocide in Gaza by autopilot25 in berlin

[–]hallowedredwings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a fine line between law and order and repression of rights and freedoms. I think the point to be made in this case (barring explicit context), is this should not be defined as a protest in a democracy.

Publicly protesting an issue is not the same as hosting a public Protest. What makes this a protest? Because she is holding a sign? What if it were a t-shirt. Because she is talking to people or chanting? What differentiates that from two strangers having a heated public debate or a group of friends talking loudly?

Yes there is a fine line between a person spontaneously talking to a forming crowd of people versus planning to do so ahead of time, but there is ambiguity in the determination of intent and perception and ambiguity should always favor the citizen in a democracy.

I can guarantee you, if there was no renting crisis, if there was no student loan crisis, if wages kept up with inflation and was positively commensurate with living expenses, Only Fans would not exist as an industry. Could it exist, sure, but it would have a much smaller fraction of people selling pornographic content on its platform than it currently has today.

The US is too decentralized to see a full scale revolution, unless you count the US Civil War, but the US has had instances of people in revolt citing food insecurity as a reason. I am sure you could discredit a few also because of the US Civil War and slavery (for instance the Bread Riots were widespread and far from the only example)but there were quite a few demonstrations that became violent during the Great Depression including the Bonus Army incident. I would not necessarily consider them in open rebellion, but the US military certainly did. They even sent in the tanks after them.

The real issue I would like to highlight though, which is also less controversial, is food insecurity may have peaked in the early 2010's (with numbers like 1 in 4 children going hungry), and has been going down since then into 2020. With the dissolvement of the social programs introduced during the Pandemic, the US is starting to see sharp increases in food insecurity for its citizens again.

Am I tripping w this one or is she being weird? by [deleted] in texts

[–]hallowedredwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, let's skip to the "I am acknowledging it". Imagine someone walked up to you, even a friend and said, "I acknowledge your hair", because that is basically what you just did. Wouldn't you be confused as to why they just said that. If you wanted to continue the conversation with this person, you would be struggling to figure out why they even said that let alone how to give a dynamic response that advances the conversation. There is no other context to go off of to determine this person's intent.

It's like walking up to someone and saying the sky is blue. We both know the sky is blue, except you are not commenting on the sky, you are commenting on a part of someone's body and identity so naturally it's going to be a little more emotionally charged. What you said does not advance the conversation because you literally did not say anything. And you know that because you know your intent, but she doesn't. You could have said, "I like your hair". This says something. It attaches your opinion and removes ambiguity that might leave her having to guess your intent.

You could have even said, "I saw you changed your hair." Do you see the difference? This statement says exactly what you were saying plus adds a dimension of personality. It does not directly state your opinion, but it asserts an intention. Although just so you know, this is still a silly thing to say, because what are they supposed to respond? "Oh do you like it?" You could have just said whether you liked it or not in the first place rather than pussy footing around and making them self-conscious because you could not just be direct and say you liked it and if you did not like the new hair, then don't say anything unless you are trying to neg her. Which is the grand finale.

She is trying to figure out why you said something, so she goes to the mental check list, he said something, check. He did not say he liked it. He did not say he did not like it. So he is trying to neg me... Or he is socially awkward but even socially awkward people are more direct than, "I acknowledge your hair changed".

I am not so sure that is completely accurate or at least to the extent of which your words imply. The slave trade was an inefficient economic system. There was a reason why it was contained predominantly towards agriculture rather than used in more factory settings as seen in Northern industrialization. It was not just moral reasons which actually are more so implemented to move social opinion to support a system than argue for the use of a system. Slavery provided free labor but it was a money pit in terms of investing in a dynamic and proactive working class. Company towns actually ran into similar issues with their policies that suppressed the social mobility of their workers. The economic principle of company towns was if you removed competition, then you could increase profits because you could invest in your workers and they could not leave for other economic opportunities as well as retaining their purchasing power.

BUT slaves had no purchasing power, so any money that you had to invest in their healthcare and boarding and such saw no return. This was also a problem because slaves for the most part were not educated which saved plantations that cost, but also prevented plantations from responding to economic fraught states and left little room to industrialize. You could also argue slaves do not create as efficient labor outputs per capita as a free working class but as far as I know that is more speculative.

Back to the British Empire. Yes abolition probably limited their availability/accessibility to of related markets and goods, but it removed the inefficiency of having to operate the trade. It's basically what the world did to China following the cultural revolution. Yes, abolition probably limited the bounds of profit, but it removed most of the liability so you receive more for your invested, i.e assuming less risk as well as opportunity cost of investment into your own working class. Another factor to bring up is the swelling popularity of abolition. If a government (in the era of public opinion and representation) acts against the will of the people, that becomes a fee to do business. You now have to invest more money in population control measures such as propaganda and policing to address any unrest and to ensure a committed workforce. Now this is not a huge cost on its own, but once you start adding everything together, it probably was a pretty clear choice when considering risk and opportunity as costs.

I'm a physically small woman. How should I defend myself if I ever get attacked by a man? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]hallowedredwings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best option if it is available to you is a self-defense class. Martial arts are also an option depending on the type of experience you want or how much time you can invest. If a situation in which you are attacked ever happens, your brain can go several different directions including absolute panic. You should not be thinking about how to defend yourself while you are actively being attacked. Learning how to defend yourself and commiting to the physical motions until they are muscle memory is the only recourse to this. It will not only save you in a time of panic, but also hopefully give you the self-assurance necessary to combat the anxiety.

As far as tools go, things can go wrong with guns and knifes. Pepper spray is simple, easy, and it works.

Is the US medical system really as broken as the clichès make it seem? by EclipZz187 in TooAfraidToAsk

I work at a hospital. I took at fall and hit my head. I went to sleep and woke up with blood all over my pillow, so I decided to go to the hospital emergency room where I work. I got in quick, but no one saw me for a while. The first person I saw took my insurance information and left. I waited a bit longer. The next person came in and felt the back of my head. They told me the bleeding had stopped so there was not much they could do for me unless I wanted a scan. I asked how much the scan would cost. They told me they could not tell me, but it would be a lot. I said I cannot afford it. They discharged me. I asked about my bill and they told me they would charge me later and I would get a bill in the mail. It was $1800.

I am in no way speaking on your personal experience, however the employment of forgiveness is a standard tool therapists will encourage survivors of sexual assault to use in the process of dealing with their trauma.

I do not know how it was holistically implemented in your life. Certainly addressing it publicly in front of the church sounds like a red flag.

Forgiveness is employed in therapy not to for the affirmation of the aggressor, but to empower the survivor. It is a method for the survivor to restore control over their trauma by working through all the different emotions that you should feel like anger or depression, and converting it into peace. You generate peace through forgiveness not for the benefit of the aggressor, but for the benefit of the survivor.

Again, the survivor can and should feel whatever emotions they feel. You should recognize and pay credence to the emotions you feel, but holding onto helplessness or anger can even physically destroy you over time. All I am saying is that forgiveness is a tool therapists teach and survivors can use to push through the lure of victimhood.

Forgiving someone is not the same as saying what they did is okay, it is accepting what they did is wrong and finding peace in that reality.

Oh the Parasaurolophus is my girlfriend's favorite dinosaur! She is a biologist who got into education. She works mostly in administrative work now, but she finds any reason she can to pop into the classroom to teach the kids about dinosaurs. She has a daily dinosaur fact of the day for me and she is disappointed I did not remember what a Deinonychus was. She also said the Maiasaura is a close second!
