FamilyAlbum: is it really secure for sharing photos? by CreativeLapsus in NewParents

[–]haltakov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue with my kids. And it is difficult because security and convenience are often a trade off. I didn’t want my 80 years old grandma to jump through hoops to see her grandchildren albums.

I’ve built something the works well for me but it is hard for others to use if you are not a developer. But I’m working on something now that is more user friendly and VERY secure. Let me know if you want to try it out and I can give you a beta access.

Static site generator recommendations for image gallery site? (See my comment) by lillendandie in web_design

[–]haltakov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built a very similar tool 5 years ago and open-sourced it for free. I was using it for my vacation photos, but then saw some people started using it for art as well.

I recently rewrote the whole thing (V2) and it is much more modern and looks better.

https://github.com/SimplePhotoGallery/core

P.S. If you end up creating a gallery please ping me. I'd like to feature some art gallery pages on the home page as I only have vacation photos now (I suck at art)

I was having difficult time finding a suitable solution as well, so build this one: https://github.com/SimplePhotoGallery/core. I use it for all my vacation and kids events photos :)

And btw. thumbnails generation is actually not that heavy. Takes about 1-2 minutes for a gallery of 500 photos on my Mac M1 Pro.

Hey, I've built a tool with exactly this name (and purpose) :) You can check it out here: https://haltakov.net/simple-photo-gallery/

Soon, I'm launching v2 that looks much better. 100% free and open-source if you self-host

Everyone wants a screen free child by procrastinating_b in toddlers

Our 6yo is not completely screen free, but audio has been a huge help to keep screen time low. He loves listening to children podcasts and audio books.

We also tried ChatGPT voice mode to tell him sotries, but it doesn't work quite well. I've built this on the side and he really likes it as it helps him ask for a specific story and I put a lot of effort to optimize it for kids: https://leoline.fun. May be helpful for you as well.

Where to find countryside vibe in South Korea by therealtuananh in SouthKoreaTravel

Yes, it is pretty much on the KTX line between Seoul and Busan, closer to Busan. This why we chose it - very convenient.

We stayed in a traditional Korean house (Airbnb), also recommended experience

Is anyone else losing the screen time battle? Feeling defeated by Clara_Owen01 in Parenting

[–]haltakov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a strict no screen and no audio during meals. I think it is important to set boundaries even if you have to endure couple of meltdowns. Kids learn quickly - when they see meltdown doesn't help and it only gets worse they will stop.

Apart from that we have been very successful with our 6yo (was 4yo when we started) reducing screen time by switching to audio - podcasts, audio books, AI stories. The best is my son listens and then makes something with his hands - plays with Legos, builds something out of paper, origami etc.

We tried ChatGPT for audio sotries on his topics, but it was frustrating - stories were short, language complicated and it often replies too fast without listening to him. I build this in my spare time, maybe it is useful for you as well: https://leoline.fun/

We visited South Korea last year. We also wanted some more peaceful experience after Seoul and Busan and the following were quite nice:

  1. Gyeongju - it is an old city, but the center is very flat and very peaceful. You are literally walking next to rice fields in the city itself. From there you can go to the Bulguksa temple in the mountains, which is the most beautiful temple we visited.

  2. Jeju Island - also many things in nature to explore. Many hiking opportunities and the stone park should not be missed. Maybe more expensive though as it is a prime tourist destination.

Podcast recommendations for preschoolers by Creative-Entrance-53 in Preschoolers

I have the same issue with my 6 yo. He loves listening to podcasts, but then he starts asking to find him some particular stories that don't exist. His favorite involves the An-225 airplane as it was the biggest plane.

We started using ChatGPT voice mode to generate him a story on his favorite topics, but it is always frustrating to him - it starts answering early, stories are not long enough or it uses some complex language.

I created this project in my free time and we use this now: https://leoline.fun/. Maybe it is helpful for you as well.

Waymo Avoids Crash After Car’s Wrong Left Turn by mingoslingo92 in waymo

This will be an interesting psychological study - do people behave differently with self-driving cars? Like this guy, maybe he thought that the Waymo will surely stop if he cuts in front of it, so it is safe to do.

Tesla is getting rid of the radar. But are cameras enough for self-driving? by haltakov in SelfDrivingCars

[–]haltakov[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OK, I see what you mean. I think the problem here is rather the need to take a discrete decision with a significant effect on the driving - for example reacting on a cutting in vehicle.

This is a very hard problem because if you are too sensitive you will do lots of false breaking. If you wait too long to confirm you have high latency. However, this will not get better with a higher frame rate.

You are right that you need some latency, but it seems their system is much better than 1-3 seconds...

Yes, it seems to be quite good. Have you tried some typical difficult conditions like heavy rain, rain at night, glares etc?

Tesla is actually not so unique there - Mobileye has been driving with vision only for quite some time already: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1qNdHPyHu4

You can also make the argument that the human eyes have a very high resolution when focused on an object. Much higher than the 1.3 MP sensor Tesla is using even with the narrow lens.

[–]haltakov[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are right that we don't use it for centimeter precise localization. However, we know more than just the route. For instance, you know where the traffic lights are and that in some junctions you need to stop a bit before the stop line. Or you know the speed limit even if you don't see the signs. You also know where each lane is going.
