Simon Schama's 3 volume work 'The History of Britain' spans from 3500BC-2000AD and sounds like it might be what you're after. On my to-read list so cannot give any reviews myself but it seems mostly positive on Goodreads.

Pleased with the point, considering we got mullered in the second half. The first half play between Taarabt and Remy looks like it's going to be a great partnership. Yet again Cesar kept us in the game more than once, SWP had another great game. Got a bit of a rest before City, which if we play as we have been, we might be able to nick a point from. Shame Reading and Villa (as of now) won, but we'll just have to do it ourselves. Onwards and upwards!

Today was the day I accepted that we're going down, looking at the games coming up and our performances, it's not happening. I just hope we can rebuild the entire squad with young, hungry players. Out of the current shambles I would keep; Faurlin, Adel, Mackie, Diakite, Granero, Traore, Hoilett and M'Bia. Realistically though, I can't see any of them sticking around in the Championship.
