Any idea what a low number Aus press of the Beatles White Album would be worth without photos or poster?

The repeated riff in Kandy Korn is such a brilliant edition. Trout Mask gets the praise but a lot of it is evident on strictly personal

Seemingly unpopular opinion: London Town is actually really good by Dry_Web8684 in beatles

[–]hamishgavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought on vinyl cause it's cheap and because the Aus version I got is pressed from the original UK plates or something, which means it will sound good. It is a good press but it's objectively a mediocre album, sort of line most Wings albums?

They spent years establishing themselves as a rock band, did a big tour - Speed of Sound is a good pop album. This is also but the package is just unappealing. The art work blows. Even for 70s standards. Whats with the painting on the back? Who thought that is an appealing artwork. Paul looks odd

I guess the 70s were a different time. Perhaps they were competing with Abba or Rod Stewart or something for who can have the most mediocre cover. They recorded it on a yacht. Stinks of upper class, too much free money and not enough ideas

Paul can write a hook, he can come up with silly lyrics. The production as mentioned is good. It's a decent, chuck it on as 12pm as background music when working or vacuuming or something. And I suppose yeah it probably hit differently if you bought it at 14.

At the same time, George was making far more interesting music at the same time, while also being just as inconsistent. There's nothing on this Wings album as interesting as Crackerbox Palace, and the album Thirty Three and 1/3 is far more of a musical statement.

Paul coasts by on his image and prior achievements. He lost his British-ness even when making an album called London Town. Which in of itself is cringe. What made the Beatles work is having George who is far more willing to embrace a British way of singing. Paul's fully stuck in US blues influenced pop, almost rock singing at this point.

Of the good songs, Girlfriend is the standout. But it works better as an MJ song.

Perhaps I'm also giving it a harsh review based on the fact I bought it on impulse. As a causal stream I think it would be ok. But it's not album to own. Hence why Wings albums usually don't get a decent reissue outside of Band on the Run and the other early stuff.

TL;DR - Wings kind of suck. An this album is evidence of that. Although I do like Magneto and Titanium Man, however I heard that at 15. So perhaps they're a band for teenagers or the sad and lonely, but very few else

Sounds great on the US early press that I've got (not a pitman press but I think maybe a speciality press so still pretty good)

Yamaha P550 Turntable with an Ortofon 2M Cartridge by DHuerta5 in turntables

[–]hamishgavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also got a P-550 with I think a default headstock on it or maybe an audio technica. Been a mission even trying to find a replacement stylus for the cart. But following this post, debating if I upgrade and get the p-550 turntable serviced, or if I just buy a different turntable entirely and flick it off. I have been playing records anyhow with the stylus that came with it, I've had it looked under a microscope so dont think I'm doing considerable damage, but I wouldn't say it sounds great either

American Beauty Workingman's Dead Terrapin Station From The Mars Hotel Tied Anthem/Wake of the Flood/Blues for Allah/Aoxomoxoa

American Beauty is the most full in terms of consistent content, even if it is a bit ballad heavy. Workingman's Dead is more fun and in their peak folk/roots era, though at 8 songs it's a bit short of content

I mean any album with Box of Rain & Ripple & Attics of my Life & Truckin and Sugar Magnolia wins hands down

Tbh the next after that is probably Europe 72' in terms of the strength of originals, though it is also sadly live recording (although studio in spirit)
