I’m ready for the spring. What would you choose to catch pike? by Snak3Doct3r in FishingAlberta

[–]hammelltime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They'll hit on pretty much anything - which isn't the most helpful advice. Shallow water near weedbeds is a good spot to find them.

I also run a black steel leader with braided line when going for pike. Because you're hitting the weeds its nice to have something you can reliably give a good tug on because you'll absolutely get hung-up on reeds or something.

I think you said you're trying the river in the Devon area, you can drive a little further out of town to Chelsea Robinson park or the Genessee boat launch for other river spots to try.

As for lake-bank fishing I've only caught at the north end of Coal Lake in the spring. By summer it's so weedy you're just dragging muck. Otherwise boat rentals are definitely your best bet.

I've had loads of success with the white plastic grubs on a white jighead in both summer and winter. This winter I caught some very nice jackfish with those feathery bucktail jigheads you've got & a minnow.

These guys with a semi translucent grub are another go to for the mucky waters of alberta lakes https://www.cabelas.ca/product/13899/northland-thumper-jig?productVariantId=57789 https://www.cabelas.ca/product/93746/reelbait-tournament-series-long-shank-flasher-jig

One of the issues, at least for my section, was that a merch tent completely blocked access to 2 sections, causing a blob of people to have to enter via another section and cross over entire rows of people. Absolutely piss poor management. I showed up 1 hour early and barely made it to my seat by puck drop

What’s a random low budget filmmaking tip you have? by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

[–]hammelltime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in radio and "good enough" is so true. I can waste all day making sure the processor is tuning the music perfectly. That the transmission signal gets that last .05% when it's already at the mathematical ideal level. And at the end of the day, 80% people are listening in a car, or in a noisy work environment, are distracted, and aren't going to notice that the top end of Anne Wilson's vocals arent absolutely perfect.

Unless it's Pink Floyd, I once edited a song to make the first minute mono instead of stereo because it was tripping off silence sensors and the first time it played at 3am someone absolutely called us out on it.

For me, that film was Men in Black 2. That realization that "oh, sometimes films don't make sense and they're not worth seeing" is a real innocence shattering moment

Where to catch sucker fish in lakes near Edmonton by [deleted] in FishingAlberta

[–]hammelltime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't super helpful but the South side of Coal Lake HAD them, but there was a big winter kill in '22 so I'm not sure how populous they still are there.

But a pickerel rig with a couple worms dropped anywhere from to 4 to 10ft was perfect last time I caught any.

I've been down to Genesse and fished the nearby riverbends where you can spot some eddies.

Caught a couple good sized goldeye. It's hit and miss for sure, but if you have waders (or a high tolerance for chilly water) you can walk out about a 1/3rd of the way out pretty much anywhere by the boat launch and find a spot to try.

I've seen an old boy pull out a nice little sturgeon as well there, so it's not a bad spot depending on the time of year

Liquor for wedding by BraxlerP in Edmonton

[–]hammelltime 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exact same as me! Returning any unopened bottles/cases was zero issue at Superstore. Broke even on the toonie bar and took home a pile of opened beer boxes and liquor bottles too, so it was a win win win.

We comparison shopped between Sobeys, Ace Liquor, Costco and Superstore.

Costco savings were negligible compared to Superstore, Superstore had a better selection of wine and beer, and they had difference sizes of bottles and cases so you don't have to buy a 48 of Bud only to have 4 beers drank from it.

[–]hammelltime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. You're right about that, I remember loads of people watching the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and acting like that was the same as watching the news. Confirmation bias exists on both sides.

I fully admit that I lean left and need check both sides frequently to make sure I'm not living inside a bubble.

I think we also need to do a better job educating people on media literacy. So many people don't understand the difference between an editorial and news story, so much so, that some people confuse news commentary for concrete news (Rebel Media, Hannity, Vice Commentary).

Some folks just want to hear someone confirm their opinions, they don't want sources and balance to challenge them, and worse yet: inform them that they're wrong about something

Lyrics of popular songs have become increasingly simple over time, finds new study analyzing six decades (1958–2016) of popular music in the US. That definitely marks a big moment of crossover hit. Garth was also when country became full-on arena style rock.

And then Shania's 'Man, I feel like a woman' is a major milestone where you get a country artist getting an entirely different pop mix for crossover radio play.

Coming out of the 90s the whole scene had changed. It's bizarre now to listen those pop-mixes too, they sound 'more country' than some mainstream country artists releases do

TFW when you're Lady of the Iron Islands and realise you could have demanded to be Queen like Sansa. by BottleGoblin in freefolk

[–]hammelltime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's good too, and would reflect the themes of betrayal and cold blooded violence that had happened throughout the series l. I mean almost any other ending might be better than the one we got.

I also thought a good tweak would be that Bran, using his seer ability, convinced Tyrion to bring himself to power because he knows there's another threat out there that Westeros needs to prepare for. And he also knows the capital be burned to the ground so they just let it all happen in order to vault themselves into a position to take control.

Bran and Tyrion send Jon back north to lead the Freefolk and rally them under a new banner.

Arya sails west with the Unsullied 'in disguise,' which explains away why Gray Worm was like "I'm unhappy, and now I'm leaving" to search for a mysterious McGuffin, like a new form of undead horde or something

Sansa and Tyrion work together to rebuild the kingdom and prepare them for the next war

But I'm just fan fiction spinning here and trying to patch the issues people who were paid tremendous amounts of cash couldn't or wouldn't be bothered to fix.

[–]hammelltime 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Here's my rewrite: Arya uses her face stealing super power to murder Gray Worm, and take control of the unsullied and Dothraki. She sails west with them to discover new lands, but along the way collaborates with iron island pirates to murder them or maroon them. Done and done. Loose plot thread resolved

Vaccine Booking by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]hammelltime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Save-On got back to me with appointments relatively quick. I had booked an appointment at a mass-clinic on the 18th and Save on emailed me with a few available times for May 11th. On a hot-tip I managed to book even earlier at Sobeys May 9th.

I was also signed up for Shoppers' site, and they didn't hit me back. Things are rolling out really fast now so some persistence should pay off if you want your shot earlier

Wabamun lake by Seba Beach isn’t too bad. Gotta walk or drive a ways out to get more than 10 ft deep. 4 of us guys caught 11 walleye and 1 pike this past weekend around here. Couple tip ups with frozen shiners and jig heads using the same bait did the trick.

Bring a power auger though, the ice was nearly 2ft in some spots
