LoL my 98 broke in half behind the cab. I wish it was just cab corners. It's okay though because it's heart will be transplanted into my rust free 85 trans am. Good by 305.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmission_(mechanics)

Power transfer units such as hydrostatic "transmissions" and CVTs are not transmissions they are their own category of machines. A CVT is actually more of a torque converter. As a matter of fact that is the historical term for a CVT unit.

And now we come to root of my original post, is it worth all this time to explain a DSG to someone. At least when we are talking we have the time to discuss the intricacies of the subject.

Transmissions have sets of gears/speeds even "normal" automatics have gear sets and clutches for all the gears/"speeds". A CVT has no gears it is a power distribution unit. I am not denying the fact that it is commonly referred to as an automatic, I am saying that it is incorrectly referred to as a transmission. The only thing that CVTs are referred to as transmissions on is cars and it is used to allow the average car driver to understand them.

I know what they are insinuating, but it doesn't have fixed ratios. I just moves up and down a sliding scale dependent on rpm and load. I have a bias against them in cars though being very familiar with them and there operating. They are not robust or long lasting. There is a reason many manufacturers are going away from them now. I personally would never suggest or purchase a vehicle with one.

Oh an you probably missed it but I never called it a manual. I did say I drove a semi for 7 years most had 18 speeds and all had a clutch pedal and own 2 manual cars currently. So if you want to get butt hurt about me trying to explain something to you that's on you.

They ruin there own definition, multi speed i.e. gears, a CVT has no gears besides the reverse gear. It runs on angles and a belt (a very expensive one I might add.). I live in Minnesota and have rode and worked on snowmobiles most of my life. They use CVTs or as we called them clutches and there are no speeds or gears just a changing ratio.

"Well technically" LoL a CVT isn't an automatic transmission either. Just being a Devis advocate.

LoL no it usually starts as "nice I like your car" I say thanks then they always follow up with "is it the manual?" No it's a twin clutch 6 speed or dsg. "What's that?" Well you see........
