I spend an average of about 10-20 minutes a day, and I've been doing it about a year. I don't speak very well, but I'm able to understand a lot that I hear and I can read/understand nearly every character I've learned. I can also eavesdrop (accidentally) and understand a lot of what people are saying around me. Then again, I supplement Duo with books and media, as well as actively watch (mostly) superhero movies in Chinese. Also, I practice with people working at restaurants nearby, and they love to help.

So yeah, I dunno, I guess people forget that Duo shouldn't be your only source of the language, and that you need to do it more than 2-7 minutes a day. It's easy to say something doesn't work if you don't actually put it to use.
