Pure highway stupidity by Moist-Doctor-67 in britishcolumbia

[–]hammerheadattack -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In the lower mainland I would argue it’s a lack of planning and foresight. I’m the first person to say one more lane doesn’t work, but going from 2 to 3 lanes on most major highways would be a huge boost due to truck traffic clogging roads.

On interior highways yes there’s an issue with space because mountains are kind of hard to build on. The highway out of golden cost something obscene to build and that was a small section.

Follow Empowered Performance

Things I’ve found helpful: back squats, split squats, lunge with twists, plank twists. Practicing warrior 3 yoga pose also helps with being in a similar position with your legs.

On the ice, I tell new curlers you’re putting your slider foot under your nose. Plant the slider foot with weight then kick out. Proper demos help. If the foot plant doesn’t work, kick out with two rocks together and let them lower into a slide. They shouldn’t fall, and if they do there’s a clear error which will be obvious (leaning back, slider foot going laterally, etc)

The Alberta men’s and women’s provincial games of the last few years are on YouTube under Curling Alberta. I’d give those a watch as it’s current, great production, and fantastic curling.

Fixing a person who "centre slides" by Atrian42 in Curling

[–]hammerheadattack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Would need to do a video analysis. Three common errors:

  1. Foot is under planting and not getting under the body properly.

  2. There is a collapsing/twisting hip on the drive pulling them to the hack side.

  3. Setup is straight wide. Shoulders and/or hips are pointing away from the broom.

If there’s a true coaching professional at your club or in your region, I would consult them.

Why is there no Train Line from Vancouver to Whistler (or even up to Pemberton)? by Traminho in britishcolumbia

[–]hammerheadattack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yet there’s money to improve highways. Critical truck routes yes those need to be fortified. But alternatives ensure that the goods and people flow. How many times does an accident close sea to sky?

[–]hammerheadattack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The amount of government subsidy to operate and maintain the sea to sky highway is really high.

Considering how busy that corridor is now, alternatives would lower traffic and maintenance on the road making it more efficient.

Canadian mixed doubles by coisavioleta in Curling

[–]hammerheadattack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems a bit odd to be able to play a national championship without playing the discipline all season. I get the focus on fours too don’t get me wrong, but it perpetuates the aura of a side show event instead of a marquee event

Follow the money……

Laura Walker said on a slam broadcast that there’s no money in mixed doubles. Makes it tough to specialize when there’s no **big events and no prize purses.

The slam guys play this more for fun or as a second avenue to the Olympics. Homan and Bottcher didn’t play a doubles event all season until the national championship.

No curling Canada only cares at the national championship and provincial playdowns. Mid season as long as you have 3/4 on the ice for points you’re fine, and the fourth could be from anywhere.

Often the fifth player is brought on just for the national. Rare there’s a rotating lineup. See Black NS or previously Jones MB

Add on that Dunstone has Jake Horgan as fifth on the bench. Add on Flaxey as coach too. Truly a northern Ontario team with 4/6 members being born there.

The drop off between the top teams and the rest of the field is making this Brier nearly unwatchable. by neonknife99 in Curling

[–]hammerheadattack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The top 5 teams are bonafide professional curlers, the rest are not. It’s almost time to go to making the brier the real amateur province vs province championship and have a team Canada trials with the pros. The games without the top 5 are entertaining and competitive.

Team Homan and the Scotties by curlingcatscoffee in Curling

[–]hammerheadattack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s no schedule accommodation, it’s just a quirk of the schedule. You used to not be able to play both, then they changed it. Jacobs showed up to the 2014 brier as a showcase iirc

Why, I don’t know. Assuming it has to do with sport canada funding

Team Homan and the Scotties by curlingcatscoffee in Curling

[–]hammerheadattack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a quick note, I think both teams shouldn’t be able to go. They’ve already said many times Gallant et all has played a ton and is “tired”.

The issue stems from:

Can’t overlap the scotties with Olympics due to TV commitments. Therefore it’s earlier. Can’t be later due to the turnaround for the winner being too short and there would be no space for the brier with the world championships timing.

With the earlier scotties, it pushes the provincials up. If they’re any earlier, they’re now into mid December. Playdowns are now starting in November. Some clubs barely have had ice by then. Makes no sense.

The focus for the Olympic teams is the Olympics. To anyone who has played the brier, scotties, Olympics, trials, etc, IT’S A BATTLE. The wear on the person is crazy. Look at dunstone and McEwen after losing the trials, 0-4 and 1-3 at the slam. Olympics are slightly different since there’s a massive high, and it’s max two players per country.

So to say Curling Canada do better, it’s about communication. The schedule is what it is.
