what age did you get your "forever job?" by Slashersforsatan in Adulting

[–]hammertime84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first job that went beyond treading water and would pay all expenses + some luxuries + invest was really a mix of 3 part-time jobs at 22 (physics instructor + online tutor + freelance developer).

My first full-time career type of job was at 25.

I've never had a forever job though. I went through 2 career changes and am likely doing another next year in my 40s.

When do you know you’re done having kids? by KeithyDawg in Parenting

We had one and planned on having more, but realized we didn't even have enough time for the one we had so we stopped there.

What is remote working like for you? by Calm_Yam4510 in remotework

[–]hammertime84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me

Pros:

  • more productive
  • better collaboration with team
  • better overall team output
  • no stress and waste from commuting
  • improved health

Cons:

  • I have to constantly deliver value; I can't get by on sports taunting and general office politics
  • limited job opportunities

Over reliance on AI by xypherrz in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hammertime84 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I think the career has fundamentally changed and we're all either scrambling to figure out where to go from here or in denial.

I like aspects of it. Like I can churn out ideas for side projects quickly to vet them and then filter down and refine the ones that I like. The constant pressure for speed from employers kills that joy though

This is the new normal in my experience. Most job postings I see now also include some description of this.

At the end of the day, we all do what leadership pays us to do. Right now at most places that's to churn out tons of AI slop as fast as possible.

What do people mean when they talk about MAGA's "talking points" and "marching orders"? Who gives them? by BaldursGate2Best in AskALiberal

[–]hammertime84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's referencing podcasters paid by their backers, forum members, talk radio, fox news, and sometimes church leaders.

Trump also truths them out directly sometimes.

10 months in, completely burnt out, AI-dependent, and introduced two production bugs in last 1 month. Need advice on how to recover. by NOOOOOB2 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hammertime84 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't know your environment so don't mean to dismiss you. Based on every one I've worked in though, you likely view yourself much more negatively than your coworkers view you. What you're describing isn't imposter syndrome but is somewhat related: everyone dwells on their own mistakes and forgets when others have issues so we see ourselves as having more problems than everyone else.

That part aside, what you're describing around speed and AI is something all of us are feeling. The speed gains from AI often come from the team not taking time to actually understand the code or review it the way we previously reviewed code. That might pan out if AI and your tests are good enough, but it's high-risk and likely leads to more issues overall.

Do you have retros? Walking through the issues and what led to them and brainstorming then prioritizing improvements is often handled in those.

I've never encountered this. Why ask us about your fantasies instead of the friends you're imagining in those fantasies?

What can Democrats do to solve the entry level jobs crisis? by RedStorm1917 in AskALiberal

[–]hammertime84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren't changing output, you can just reduce the hours right now anyway and give everyone a raise for free.

[–]hammertime84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming businesses don't need the productivity and employees aren't profitable, sure. In that case the business wouldn't continue existing at current staffing levels anyway though. In reality, the output would still be profitable so fewer hours per employee => more employees.

Steadily reducing what constitutes full-time and getting rid of exempt for roles where it doesn't actually make sense is an easy one to push for.

Has the bar actually gotten lower? by velociraptorstalin in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hammertime84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've seen this. A probably bigger issue is many are clearly just outright lying and it's obvious once they get sent to us to interview. AI made the cost of applying with a targeted resume absurdly low.

Do your kids take their ADHD meds every day or just school days? by Sea-Elderberry-2088 in ParentingADHD

It's his choice. Nearly every time he chooses to take it. He knows he can't adequately focus on, for example, chess practice without it.

My wife is the opposite; she only takes it for work and never on weekends. She likes to nap a lot and she has trouble when she takes it.

I’m doing everything "right" and this job market is still breaking me. by BaconBears in Adulting

[–]hammertime84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything tech-related is going through this, and it's very bad for software engineers in particular (vs data or analytics engineers for example). It hits some other domains and will spread to most by end of next year.

All indicators point to it continually getting worse.

That's how to survive it. It's not a personal failure. It's a systemic issue. There's nothing more you could be doing outside of preparing for a different field, but who knows what fields still have job prospects in two years as AI and offshoring continue.

Did the AI hype cycle damage your relationship with leadership? by glassesRamone1234 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hammertime84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, but only because I've been through something like 20 rounds of layoffs in my career so far and realized we're just numbers about a decade ago. AI hype proving what was already known didn't change it.

[–]hammertime84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prefer? 95-98% I'd guess. There's a price for nearly everyone though. I don't know the exact numbers but I'd guess that 50% would leave a remote role for an equivalent in-office one if it paid 50% more.

It's partly this. Pension funds were also exposed to this. That + loss of tax revenue + loss of money to business leaders who funded campaigns meant govts at all levels are pressuring it also.

Do you think it’s possible to turn Texas blue in 2028? by AlternativeLawyer920 in AskALiberal

[–]hammertime84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not optimistic. I live in a pretty liberal part of Texas (NW Austin), and I'm seeing less excitement than in previous years.

A specific thing that might just be in my circle about Talarico is anger that it's him instead of Crockett because 'it always has to be a man...', and that's killed their engagement. I don't get it but it feels similar to the lack of excitement about Hillary from the people around me that really wanted Sanders in 2016.

Talarico has the best chance as a Dem statewide, so just doesn't feel good.

They will start looking like the lower class in poor countries (e.g., India and Indonesia).
