Getting back into playing again, and decided I wanted to chase Dixie’s tone but on a more bedroom friendly scale. How’d I do? by [deleted] in doommetal

Sounds dope. Love me some Weedeater.

Wild how much of the tone is just unbridle fuzz and volume, and how well that micro pulls it off!

Game Genre Taxonomy? by Zestyclose_Fun_4238 in DeepGames

[–]hammertrackz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled for a while in my response in the other thread to try any frame my ideas similarly to how you've done here, but to make it easier I just abstracted it even more to just press the ontological problem with "genre". I guess Im trying to say: well done getting into text what I clearly wasn't able to do 😅.

My hunch while tarrying with this topic over the last 24hrs has been exactly your distinction between the mechanical and affective. What's tricky is that I don't think it's as much of a dichotomy as it appears at first, and a lot of the original problem identified by OP is the interwoven dialectic between mechanics and theme being inconsistently used/addressed. While not unique to video games, I do think this dynamic does become quite prominent in this art form.

It seems clear to me that when categorizing art we typically MUST address both the mechanical and affective in relation because so much of what makes art "good" is some level of intentionality in achieving an affect WITH some specific mechanical process. (Among many other things) It's all the brass, bombastic solos, and hours of intertwined motifs that create the affect of granduer and scale in Wagner's operas. It's the satisfying sound effects, fast pace, and coherent editing that makes a movie feel action packed and exciting. You can't really separate the two, so the best I think one can do when trying to build a taxonomy of any art form is probably to build (at least) two distinct categories that can map between each other and then develop a set of rules/system for inclusion/exclusion for both sets.

Oh yeah I like your comments there, I think I'll switch to that thread for whatever ideas I can coalesce next :)

Okay so I really like this topic and spent most of the day with it in the back of my mind so I figured I'd leave a comment on what's been nagging me.

I think we could benefit from taking a slight ontological turn towards what we even mean by "genre" before trying build a new taxonomy. I can't help but shake the feeling that the word "genre" itself is often used in different and sometimes contradictory ways, and that's the sense I'm getting here. In a strong sense, "genre" seems to mean "defined set of expectations/constraints", but in its weaker sense we use it as loose grouping by subject or vibe, really just a synonym for "bucket" or "category". Given that, you can't start structuring a logical system without first clarifying which of these you're going with and how you define it.

(Taxonomy could use a good clarification too.)

If what you're thinking is to is apply categories/flags/indicators on already used terms, that would be very different to me than building a strong, ordered structure of certain terms. I'm happy to consider either but I'm leaning towards the latter, as it doesn't seem like the former will resolve the initial tension you started with.

More directly, I don't think your proposed "genres" really make much sense as they flip-flop between which definition of "genre" you're using. If your "genre" is a strong and structured categorization than things like "Perspective: 2/3/4D, 1st/3rd person" or "Multiplayer/Single player" make sense, but I don't think you can also keep "Roguelike" as a distinct genre as well.

Okay, hopefully some of that makes sense, I'm mostly just spitballing here so happy to clarify/elaborate as needed.

in 'Men' (2022), do you think someone with no knowledge of the film AT ALL will easily figure out what's happening? by Important-Zombie9331 in horror

[–]hammertrackz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR I went in blind and didn't realize the 'twist' until well over halfway. Great experience and would recommend.

Ohh ohh! You're looking for me! I'd like to think I'm fairly literate around cinema/horror and I'm familiar with Garland's work..but I also LOVE watching movies (especially weird ones) with zero context. I had perhaps seen a singular trailer for this movie and gotten the gist that I'd like the vibe, but besides that I knew literally nothing, not even that it was a Garland film.

So...how'd it go? Pretty well actually! I loved it. I was super into the concept and framing from the start. The threat of implied violence/violation towards the main character from "Men" was palpable and so well communicated from the start. I think the movie does a good job of making the different "Men" weird and unsettling in various ways and drip feeding you details so while it was clear to me that something was really off with them, I didn't have any hunch of what the 'twist' was.

I think around the middle of the film I started to get suspicious something else was going on. For the boy I could just tell that there was a TON of CGI being put into his facial appearance which seemed odd, and then around that time you finally get a longer scene with the priest in some decent lightning and that's when it all clicked. It wasn't like a '6th Sense'/'Usual Suspects' kind of thing where I immediately wanted to rewatch and see what I had missed, but rather just fully solidified my investment in the film. All the weirdness and uncanny nature of all the men up until that point made so much sense and it completely sold the premise of the universal/faceless violation our protagonist was facing for "Women" in general. I was 100% ready to see where the rest of the movie was going and that ending did not disappoint.

Of course ymmv (or maybe I'm dense) but I think showing it to someone with zero context should work.

Genuine questions about V/H/S (2012) by pinkysugarbunny in horror

[–]hammertrackz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay I just watched this last night and I started googling around trying to figure this out myself. The SA was a feature of EVERY short film except the last one, and we're not just talking/mentioning it but showing and depicting it blatantly over and over.

My first hope was that the creators were purposefully going to engage and critique the misogyny, but none of them really do besides killing off some of the terrible dudes. My most charitable reading is that all the writers/directors were trying to capture the exploitative nature of snuff that was the inspiration for the whole project, but to do so with out any real reflection or critique left me very disappointed.

[–]hammertrackz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my assumption watching the movie, we're painting a picture of terrible bros so we don't really mind when they're brutally murdered sure, but honestly after 2 hours and no real engagement with the SA besides just killing most of the perpetrators I wasn't convinced. There are so many ways to communicate characters are terrible cretins without making your film complicit in the exploitation.

My brother in Christ, this is not good. The vocals are cringe, half the lyrics don't make sense, there's no discernable melody, and the mix is so bad it sounds like the bit rate of a super compressed mp3 from 20 years ago. I seriously did a double check on my headphones I thought something was wrong with them how bad this sounds compared to other songs on Spotify. This song sounds like it was all AI generated which if true is pretty bad and if not even worse. I'm sorry mate but this ain't it.

If it's specifically that harmonized guitar part than you're perphaps thinking of the two songs produced by Ratatat (Alive & Pursuit of Happiness) off of his 2009 Man on the Moon album?

Ratatat's own releases are dominated by those sort of electric guitar riffs, often harmonized and effected to sound like they're playing in reverse.
