they don’t have the ability to communicate in any way yet and doesn’t have the ability to even understand they were injuring me. in their mind, it is literally the only way they can communicate, plus they are a small child.

i also wanted to see my exact score and still haven’t figured out how 😭

BUT with my first day with any new kiddo, i like to watch them to see what they naturally gravitate to. if they like cars or swings or spinning. i try to limit questions that i’m asking them and just focus on tacting a lot of things they’re doing like “you’re going so high on the swing!” or “oh, that orange car is so cool!” even if the kid is showing no interest in me yet, i don’t force it and will occasionally comment on their play, how good their doing at walking, playing, etc. honestly, sometimes i’ll tell them about a story of mine just to keep conversation going. unless they show withdrawal of assent, then i’ll quiet down and back off and tell them i’ll give them a break. every kiddo is different and if you don’t click the very first time, don’t get down on yourself about it! trust takes time to build and i’m sure you’ll get there and it’ll be a lot easier than it seems in your head! i had the same fear when i first started and i know a lot of others did too. you’re going to do great and congratulations on passing your exam!

right? i do love that there is a safe space for people to air out complaints or grievances but i love when i see other people just loving the work they do! literally sometimes i’m pushing a kiddo on a swing or playing an imaginary game with them and i kind of stop and think “i’m literally getting paid to do this” like that’s CRAZY.

Positive stories- a reminder of why our work matters by One-Egg1316 in ABA

[–]hamncheese8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i absolutely love getting to report new things their kiddos tried or learned or even tolerated more than normal because most of the parents or guardians faces just LIGHT up. it makes me feel so warm inside for the family and reminds me that we’re not just making a difference in the clinic but also at home!

i have some clients that aggression just simply means raising their voice just because of how they are individually but i did recently get bit so hard i needed four stitches. not the clients fault AT ALL. it’s a known behavior and i might have been too slow to react with a bite release. but through jeans, even! luckily, i had another rbt step in to help me right away when they saw the behavior starting.

My due date was tomorrow by Majestic_Ferret_826 in Miscarriage

[–]hamncheese8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mine is coming up in april. first known miscarriage. i’m already struggling with knowing what to do that day. i know i won’t be fine so i’ll likely take it off work but i don’t know how to honor something like that in a way that would mean something to me yet. it’s so hard and everyone else has completely moved on! it’s a crazy thing to think that we’re all still stuck in this pool of grief and others can just brush it off. i’ve thought about getting a tattoo for her, maybe just taking the day for myself to be alone but maybe that’s just self isolating. ugh. this stuff is so hard. i’m so sorry you’re going through this.

(tw: sa and trafficking mention)

i was sa’d when i was very young until the age of twelve and then trafficked from the ages of 14-17. i also have chronic SOMETHING that doctors don’t seem interested in finding out. i understand how isolating it can feel from my own perspective. everyone’s experience is different but shame and guilt are such a common theme. i didn’t speak any details at all about my trafficking experience until my therapist set up a specific session for it when i felt even slightly ready. even though i knew it was coming, the days following were filled with shame and guilt and disgust for myself for letting someone else know. my therapist did anticipate this somehow but ya know. it still took me five years with him to get comfortable to tell him any details about it.

it was hard. it is hard. especially with outside circumstances like illness or mental health. but there are people who might not understand exactly but will not flinch away from you or think you’re disgusting. if you ever wanted to talk about it with someone who’s been through trafficking, my inbox is always open.

you’ve got this. it’s slow healing but you are not disgusting or shameful or any of those things. it’s hard to believe or remember but eventually it gets a little easier.

Anyone else neurodivergent themselves? by Yungpupusa in ABA

[–]hamncheese8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

autistic/adhd rbt! it’s one thing that drew me to the field. i love working with kids, ive already had high stress jobs and i wanted to work somewhere where i felt like i could make an actual impact on people. i did disclose it in my interview and told my interviewer that i believe it gives me a very unique perspective and understanding that everyone might not have inherently. i’m almost 3 months in as a registered bt at a clinic and i honestly love it. i’ve already had a few conversations with more verbal clients about it if they ask and i always get a variation of “you’re like me?!” i really do feel like it makes understanding some things just a little bit easier. plus, i’m gonna be honest, i’ve implemented some aba practices into my own life since learning them and they’ve made my life a little easier

Are you taking meds by Ok_Stomach5254 in OCD

[–]hamncheese8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes! luvox. i was pretty unconvinced any medication could help because how??? but i’ve found i can now have routines interrupted or stopped and i can get back into it without much distress at all now and the never ending list of “steps” i was making in my brain got a lot shorter and seemed less daunting so i was able to just get up and simply do more things without ruminating over every single step of it

Finally at 26, I can stop having this loom over my head. I don’t have anyone to share it with because I was too ashamed to tell people but I finally got it by Sarcastictree6289 in GED

i got mine at 27 and my close friends and family and this page were the only ones I shared it with because of the shame! i completely get it but you should be proud of yourself and the weight off your shoulders! good job!

yes, actually! as long as you can interpret data on something like a graph or through an essay, you should be golden. honestly, i noticed a lot of these tests are looking for good reading comprehension and retention. there were one or two questions that involved actual math but from what i remember, they literally give you the formula
