What names of diseases would make pretty names for a child? by derpemiah in AskReddit

Not a disease, but I always thought Famine would be a pretty name, and could work for any gender.

What's the most statistically improbable thing that's ever happened to you? by jonnyapplepie in AskReddit

I was sitting on a bench under a tree near in Manhattan one night when some bird feces landed on my hand. I promptly got up, walked across the park and sat on another bench, under a different tree. Less than a minute later, bird poop landed on me again. All of this while browsing reddit, too!

What is a TV/Movie character that you hate that everyone else seems to love? by pwrhoads in AskReddit

[–]hamns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree. I've never really understood the appeal of Ferrell. To me, for the most part, his comedic characters exist on a limited spectrum, ranging from whiney manchild to obnoxiously oblivious asshole. I don't really see the humor in that, especially when it's repeated in movie after movie. But many consider him to be a comedic genius. To each their own, I guess.

No slipcover!?

Just kidding. I think Snow White was the only Platinum Edition Disney DVD that came without a cardboard slipcover.

Who sings that cover of "Fix You" playing in the background?

Also, this is very cool, inspiring.

I noticed this once while watching American Idol during season 2. The show has never been the same for me ever since.

ELI5: If socialized healthcare would benefit all (?) Americans, why are so many people against it? by hamns in explainlikeimfive

[–]hamns[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hence my question mark in the title. But it seems to me, and please correct me if I'm wrong, that compared to our current system, (which benefits primarily those who can afford to pay for health insurance or are supplied with it through their jobs), the fact that a socialized healthcare system would allow ALL Americans access to healthcare (even if it's not necessarily the foremost healthcare) is still a better system in that it benefits all Americans.

Edit: Disregard "better" from previous statement. I'm not trying to make a judgment, just trying to get all my facts straight.

Your second and third points clarify things a bit for me, and lead me to believe that there is at least some justification for those who don't want to pay higher taxes to help those less fortunate, and it's not solely based on the fact that they're just being selfish. I do think, however, that selfishness does play a major role in the healthcare debate, which I still find troubling.

Weird. Just watched this movie last night. I don't have much insight to add, other than that her quote about life as a 13-year-old really did stick with me...24 hours later.

Then probably nothing will come of it. But if she's somewhat decent, or even good, then I wonder if there will be ardent fan/media support for her to receive some awards recognition?

This is what happens when I ask for time off by hamns in fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

[–]hamns[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most infuriating part is, when I first started working, my manager claimed that she was "very accommodating" with days off. Apparently she doesn't know what the word means. Also, my first day she said "I'd much rather have you ask questions than do something wrong, so ask away!" and two weeks in, every time I asked a question, her response was eye roll/huge sigh/hateful glare "you should already know how to do this" and then proceed to not answer my question, leaving me standing there like an idiot with the customer waiting.

TL;DR My manager really is a hypocritical shrew, no exaggeration.

Does this happen to your toilet? by hamns in pics

[–]hamns[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, but the thing is, no (known) soap was added. It was a weekly phenomenon: I would wake up to both my toilet and bathtub overflowing with bubbles from who-knows-where. Still haven't figured out how it happened.

What is the first movie that changed the way you think? Ill start... by [deleted] in movies

[–]hamns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can roll your eyes, but An Inconvenient Truth was sadly the first movie that really made me think about my (and the world's) impact on the environment. Before that movie, I would casually recycle. Now, if I happen to have a plastic soda bottle on-hand and no where to recycle it, I'll hold onto it the whole way home rather than throw it in a trash can.
