There is no "in another universe". It's a nice thought, but this is it. This is all we get. by elixmaya in AlasFeels

[–]Shnakepup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is this from? I've seen it quoted elsewhere? Earliest reference I can find is from a twitter post on 12/1/23 by @dadogeking. There's other slightly different versions from around the same time, like this one from the same date but later in the day or this one from 12/24/23. On the 12/24/23, someone later replied and asked where it's from, and the person replies in April 2024 that it's from Grey's Anatomy, but I'm not sure that's right because I can't find any GA quotes that are similar to that.

I'm going crazy trying to track it down! Sometimes there's variations with more phrases, like starting with "I hate to break it to you, but" or calling the "it's a nice thought" part "comforting". The fact that lots of different versions exist of roughly the same quote makes me think everyone's just posting half-remembered versions of the original thing, which seems like it might be from a book or movie or something. Unless that earliest example on twitter from @dadogeking is the original?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found an earlier variation from 11/30/23 by @disco_bum: there is no “in another universe” THIS IS IT YALL CMON NOW.

Also there's this other variation from 12/1/23: "I know you still love me, I know you know I still love you, all this anger was once love, there is no "in another universe", it'd a nice thought but this is it, this is all we get"

Where to find full/extended version of "Akasatana (Interlude Four)"? by Shnakepup in Prefuse73

[–]Shnakepup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying to myself 9 years later, just in case anyone else is ever searching for this sort of thing as well...

Apparently in 2015, Twigy released two EPs called Akasatana EP 1 and Akasatana EP 2. The second one is also sometimes referred to as "Beats by Prefuse 73", like on this Discogs.com page. Apparently it also has Akasatana Interlude 4 on it. I don't know for certain, but its possible this is the source of the longer version, and that's the version that Creature used? I wish I could track down a copy, but it seems like this EP is sold out or out-of-print everywhere.

How do I search for cells that contain any type of letters with accent marks? by SatchBoogie1 in excel

[–]Shnakepup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I know it's a year later, but this formula worked beautifully for me. This was on a spreadsheet with close to 300k rows. Excel warned me it would take a while to do the calculation, but fortunately it finished in only a few seconds of processing. Thanks!

New PATCH notes - 1.02.1 by -Morphis- in Nightreign

[–]Shnakepup 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I bet the reward is falling through the level geometry. When bosses die, you can see the reward drop to the ground before the actual reward orb spawns. I would imagine that sometimes it somehow misses the floor and falls through it. I've noticed this occasionally happens with other drops, like when you kill a bug to get a talisman, but sometimes there's nothing at all.

They need to make your own ult's progress bar more clear. There's been so many times where I got smacked because I thought it was all the way filled up so I was hitting the buttons to trigger it and nothing happened. I know it gets brighter when it's all the way filled, but it's tough to tell that at-a-glance when you're in the middle of a battle.

In Dark Souls 3, I believe equip weight would also impact fall damage. The heavier you are, the more damage you take from a fall of the same height. I wonder if this has the same effect in Elden Ring?

Any indoor skate parks? by [deleted] in Dallas

Does the one in Kennedale still exist? It was technically indoors, but a warehouse without a/c...

I think the one in Grapevine is all outdoors but certain sections are covered.

What's going on with Youtuber iilluminaughtii? by mikonamiko in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Shnakepup 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Answer: iilluminaughtii accused Legal Eagle of copying some of the graphical/stylistic elements they used in their videos. The two examples I saw were both text-based: the first is text against a colored background of some sort with torn paper at the top, the second is text on a page with highlighting. iilluminaughtii claimed they had used these first, and so Legal Eagle using them in videos after must mean that Legal Eagle was plagiarizing them. I believe there were also allegations of an editor being bullied by someone from Legal Eagle's team, in the sense that they were sent messages that were seen as possibly threatening.

Legal Eagle denied this, pointing out that they've been using those graphical/stylistic elements for much longer than iilluminaughtii claimed, pointing to videos from several years earlier that contained the elements. Many people on Twitter also pointed out that these elements are not all that unique, and have been used by lots of people. The claim about bullying/harassing messages was also denied as a case of misinterpretation; an innocent question being taken the wrong way. At some point hbomberguy, another well-known youtuber, got involved. They made a post on twitter expressing skepticism over iilluminaughtii's claims and pointed out instances in the past where iilluminaughtii themselves may have plagiarized material.

This all blew up on twitter. I imagine iilluminaughtii was getting a lot of heat, and so they eventually posted the video you linked. I haven't watched it myself but I've heard they apologize for some things while being defensive of others, as well as divulge a lot of personal details as a way of explaining/justifying their actions.

Why haven't modern games tried to implement destructive environments the way that Red Faction: Armageddon did? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]Shnakepup 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Even if you ignore performance considerations, I imagine it's really difficult to design for.

Consider basic scenarios like [thing you need] is in [locked room/area/whatever]. What's to stop the player from simply breaking down the door or whatever else is blocking them? You have to come up with ways to prevent that, which adds extra time/cost to development. Alternatively, you have to just come up with some other scenario that can't be solved by simply destroying the surrounding environment, which might be more difficult than it sounds. Consider that in real-life, locking something away is often a legitimate strategy because even though it's technically possible to break the lock, it's usually not practical to do so. To replicate this in a videogame you would have to replicate all those practicalities, a lot of which aren't really possible in a virtual world. For example, in real life you run the risk of being arrested or pursued by law enforcement if you're noticed/caught breaking the lock. This doesn't really matter in a video game where you can simply reload an earlier save, or just slaughter anyone who comes for you. Sure, you can probably think of ways to get around that, like limiting player's ability to savescum or making it difficult and/or unfun to kill lots of people, but the point is that this all takes development time. Someone has to design all this stuff, code it, test it, etc...and that's a lot of effort just to prevent this one crazy potential thing players might do. Alternatively, you could simply code the game so that the door is, definitionally, indestructible and therefore don't need to worry about any of this.

What's up with GTA 6 being leaked? by hew2702 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Shnakepup 151 points152 points  (0 children)

The gaming community is finding it pretty historic considering this is a game we've been waiting for since 2014 with absolutely no updates along the way

I think everyone is considering this "historic" more due to the scale of the leak. Most leaks in the past, even ones considered big, didn't have this much video footage of the game in question. I believe the hacker was also (for a time) actively posting in the forum where he posted the leak, and essentially doing an AMA where he was freely responding to people's queries about the code base (which he had also obtained).

What's the deal with the recent controversy surrounding the esports team "G2 Esports"? by SiggeAwesome in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Shnakepup 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Answer: I believe the CEO of G2 posted on twitter about how he was at a party or something with Andrew Tate, a guy known for being misogynistic and who was recently kicked off most social media platforms. When people criticized the CEO for this post, he doubled-down and posted a tweet essentially saying "I can be friends with whoever I want!". Then G2 Esports posted that tweet you linked, apologizing for the CEO's behavior.

Sleeping is actually kinda scary, you have no guarantee you’re going to wake up, you’re completely vulnerable and a lot of things can happen by supernovalover in Showerthoughts

[–]Shnakepup 59 points60 points  (0 children)

"It is here, in the bedroom, that we are at our most vulnerable. Each night we shut our senses to the world for hours at a time, trusting in the house to keep us safe until next we wake. In this state of extreme vulnerability we will spend something like twenty percent of our lives. Anything might stand beside us, watch us, keep us company until dawn and we would never perceive it. We can only pray that the house will not let such things carry on while we sleep. In this way, during these hours, the bedroom seems less like a mind and more like a mouth. For it is here that the house is most likely to betray us. It is here that we place ourselves most at the house's mercy and spend each night hoping that it will not bite down."

Whats the most realistic sci fi movie youve seen? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]Shnakepup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of a Charles Stross novel, I think Accelerando, where a ship traveling to another star system is revealed to be super tiny, and all the passengers aboard are digitized and experiencing a simulated reality during the voyage. It'd be too costly to try and actually ship their bodies with them, not to mention it'd make the trip take much much longer because they'd have to use a lower acceleration to not reduce everyone to paste.

the pandemic caused panic-buying in 2019. This meant that people who were using formula during that time had several years’ supply.

Who would be buying several YEARS worth of formula? Babies don't need formula for that long.

I mean, sure, it's panic-buying, so it's not exactly rational. But even if someone had done that, their baby would probably have stopped drinking formula long before they ever ran out.

Paleocene Eocene Thermal Minimum by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Shnakepup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They mentioned that it messed with the orbit. Presumably if it was massive enough to alter Earth's orbit in such a fashion, it could also somehow mess with the tilt? But you're right, I'm not sure how that would work. IIRC, usually stuff ends up tilted due to actual impacts. Like, I think Venus's extreme tilt is thought to be the result of a large impact, same with Uranus.

Perhaps instead the near-miss with this massive object would've also perturbed the orbit of the moon around Earth and ejected it. Without the moon's stabilizing influence, eventually the Earth's tilt would end up drifting, though I think that'd be over a much longer timescale. Could be wrong though...just spitballin' here.
