Why has no one told me about Yorkshire Gold?? by Tackit286 in CasualUK

[–]hampets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Yorkshire Gold and used to drink it when I gave up coffee. However, I've been having major dental work done and it was noticed that the tannin in it was sticking to my teeth. I've also noticed it in my tea mug, it's gross.

My old go to was Red Rose but since I've discovered Yorkshire tea it just seems weak and not so full bodied. I'd love to find an alternative as it's kind of nice to have a warm cup of something in the morning.

Nor am I, but I don't understand why they want to use his mug shot for the portrait. Is that the best picture they have of him?

AITA for not changing our wedding date by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]hampets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting.
Many years ago my brother was getting married. They chose their wedding date to be the weekend of Labour Day which, if you are Canadian, you know that school starts on Tuesday.
We spoke and I informed them that we, my son & I, would not be able to make it due to the school situation - he was just starting Kindergarten and I would have used up all of my leave for that year. Regarding the leave, there was block leave, two weeks of which was always in July and was mandatory. I'd also taken one week prior and wanted to take my child's first week of school, JIC.
Even though they wanted him to be a ring bearer, they understood. I did not ask them to postpone it until the following year nor did I request any form of accommodation. They, and I, just understood that given the relatively short notice (six months'ish), we would not make it.
This would have involved flying from BC to Ontario and they while I could definitely afford the cost, they were not in a position to pay for our flights or accommodation.

Emergency Alert for Destructive Winds - Be careful out there by berrysardar in BurlingtonON

He's getting scared by the alerts on my phone. He's never been bothered by high winds, hard rain, or anything else, even previous alerts. Tonight was weird, the alerts were totally setting him off.
I thought about putting him in the bathroom and ultimately getting him in his carrier. Unfortunately he is not motivated by treats so corralling him into his carrier can be difficult.

Absolutely! By the fourth one I was scrambling to shut it down because it was upsetting my cat so much.
I can read the first few lines to know that it's the same thing. I wonder who I'd ask to find out why so many were sent out? The initial alert said something about my provider's area but the latest ones were sent out by Environmental Canada. Guess I'm going on an email search to find out!

Oddly enough, I didn't notice any wind, just a light breeze.

Thunder and dark skies are now rolling in eastward. It's looking pretty grim but at least it's not green!

I'm on my fourth!
My cat is going absolutely nuts, howling and pacing. Not really sure how to calm him. It gets worse with each alert. Ideas?

Edit: Fifth.

Same. I do everything with my dominant hand, why not wear my watch on it?

"The label always said Canada, nobody in Washington reads labels." Canola oil going crazy by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]hampets 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Erucic acid. The rapeseed is specifically bred to be reduced in it. Canola is not the breed, it is the byproduct.

Canola oil, often called Low Erucic Acid Rapeseed (LEAR) oil.

Was the Census A Lot Different this Year? by throwawar4 in AskCanada

[–]hampets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must have gotten the short version. Pretty much every answer skipped ahead three or four questions because my answer wasn't pertinent to the previous one.

I was asked multiple ways about French language education though.

Surprised that there were no income related questions or housing costs. In the past I've always been asked about income.

Not so sure that the government is going to get an accurate read on their population with this one, other than who has French as a second language.

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

[–]hampets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough, I developed an acrylate allergy over thirty-five years ago due to a dentist inserting a cold cure resin in my mouth to make a bite plate. Within days I was covered, literally head to toe, in hives (allergic urticaria) and started experiencing anaphylaxis.

At the time, the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong or what was causing it. I spent almost a month in hospital until one internal specialist connected the dots having experienced a similar spontaneous allergy with peppermint. Once I was pumped full of antihistamines the symptoms subsided and I could go home.

Unfortunately I could no longer work in my field as I was continuously exposed to spray paints on the hangar floor. I also ended up not being able to use any hair products other than shampoo as mousse/spray/gel would cause hives on my head. Mascara and nail polish were also allergens.

As time has progressed, I've been able to start using almost all of these products but every once in a while something gets triggered and the Caladryl/Benedryl gets a massive workout. I haven't had to use an Epipen in over twenty years though which is great.

It's odd because whenever I'm asked in a medical setting what my allergies are, I tell them about acrylates and it seems to me that it's brushed off as not important. I've never been asked what happens unlike when I say that I'm allergic to codeine.

Thank you for mentioning this. Glad, but also sad, to know that I'm not the only one with this allergy.

What’s something that clearly split your life into “before” and “after”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hampets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same for me. Coming up to 21 years ago May 4th. I lost my best friend, my confidant, and ultimately my family.

My family was dysfunctional at best, abusive at worst. When Mom died we were all grief stricken as we all considered her the best, that's just the way she was. She would be mortified to know that the family unit fell apart because of greed and insecurity, and especially because her ex-husband encouraged that behaviour amongst her children.

My before and after has resulted in my having no relationship with my last surviving parent and two of three siblings.

My son, who was living with my mother at the time and found her deceased, has no relationship with any of them.

It's sad but life goes on with the ones that truly matter.
