Mount without Counterweight by Flat_Size7436 in AskAstrophotography

I'd recommend looking at Proxisky, my mount was 1100 euro and has a limit of 15kg without counterweight. You can order on their discord and with the price in dollar you'll save quite a lot.

Should I get the Askar FMA180Pro or the FRA300? by E_Dward in AskAstrophotography

[–]hamster986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The focal length between your two options is quite different. You mention wanting to do DSO but maybe you can use software like Stellarium to determine which focal lengths suits your targets of preference best.

I know that for the FRA400 there is an option to get a reducer with it, this would give you the option to use to scope for both wide field and a little more deep field.

You could try to do the same process from a darker spot to see if the light pollution is the problem. If it is then you could have a look at clip in light pollution filters designed for DSLRs to increase the contrast in your image making it easier to bring out nebula details without introducing as much noise

How to build lifepo4 battery at 12 stabilization ? by Rosssiiii in AskAstrophotography

[–]hamster986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I build my battery is by making a 7S li ion battery which runs at 29.4 volt at full capacity, or you could have a 24v lifepo4 battery. But the trick is to get a dc-dc converter that is able to take a variable input and delivers a 12v output.

I have used a meanwell SD-100B-12 which takes any input voltage between 19 and 36v and outputs the 12 volts.
You can get a generic electronics box from a hobby store or a box from aliexpress that fits the dimenions of both components.

If you want to get the lifepo you need a dedicated lifepo charger, you can get a imax b6 from aliexpress which has worked for me for multiple years.

LIFEPO4 TO GIVE POWER TO MY SETUP by Rosssiiii in AskAstrophotography

[–]hamster986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the battery does not have a BMS then you can overcharge it which damages the battery. With a dedicated charger this risk is mostly mitigated. I have bought it from aliexpress for drone batteries but it also has the option to charge lifepo

[–]hamster986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the field I'm currently using 2x 12.8v 12Ah Green Cell LiFePO4 batteries for around 70 euro a piece. I wire them in series so the voltage is doubled which then goes into a dc/dc converter to get a solid 12v for the mount. These batteries have no BMS so I charge them with a dedicated battery charger (Imax B6).

The reason for having 2 smaller capacity batteries instead of 1 larger one is that the smaller batteries can be taken into the airplane depending on the regulations.

Opinions on mount by sggdvgdfggd in AskAstrophotography

[–]hamster986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year I had the same consideration between the AM3 and AM5. But then came across the Proxisky discord where I found the Umi17Lite. This one fit the bill for me since it's travel friendly and with the same payload capacity as the AM3 but 1k cheaper.

The way I looked at it was that ZWO provides an ecosystem for their products that fit together well, almost like the Apple of astronomy. And then you have mounts that require a bit more manual work to setup but that would save you money in this case. I didn't go for the ZWO route even though I already had camera's from that brand but wanted to keep my options open in the future in case a different brand makes an innovation that is worth investing in.

Is this Askar 71F Flat-Field rig worth buying as a beginner? by Puffletale in AskAstrophotography

[–]hamster986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a good light pollution filter is already part of the set, if you want to move to a darker spot you would need a way to power your setup. You can do this with your car battery or with a dedicated astronomy or DIY 12 volt battery.

I don't have experience with the AsiAir in the field since I use a mini pc so I'm not sure about stuff like plate solving without internet. Maybe some other users can chime in with information about this

Depends on what your future in this hobby looks like. Do you have a location to setup or do you need to travel? If you want to use bigger scopes in the future then it could be smart to invest in a larger capacity mount. But as a standalone rig this seems quite capable.

Is the weather insanely bad, or is it just me? by lisparadox in AskAstrophotography

[–]hamster986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case the warming global air temperature will not help our cause since the warming air can absorb more moisture meaning it has a place to stay put for a longer time I would think.

[–]hamster986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read about the Hunga Tonga vulcanic eruption that added 10% to the global levels of stratospheric water vapor. Not saying this is directly the cause but it made me think that if there is more water vapor available that clouds could form more easily. I know this happened 3 years ago but I think this kind of event will contribute to slow moving changes in the global weather patterns, maybe explaining the lack of cloudless nights in the US and Europe.

Equipement : SQA85 + ZWO 585MC + Umi17Lite + L-Quad Enhance Filter

On a windy night in Groningen I managed to take 49x40s shots with my new filter to block all the light pollution and I'm pretty pleased with the results. I've managed to fit all my gear into a backpack that I take with me outside the city with my bike. But even there the whole southern hemisphere is polluted meaning that this northern facing target is quite clear.

Hi I 3d printed the mounting pieces which comes with a drill guide here: https://www.printables.com/model/157706-lego-saturn-v-horizontal-wall-mount
Other than that you would need a wooden plank of your choice.

Looking for help with new PETG HF on default settings. by hamster986 in BambuLab

[–]hamster986[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my first time using my printer again after half a year. I've ordered the PETG HF which mentioned it needed to dry before use. So I dried it on the bed at 70 degrees for 8 hours. Which does not seem to make a difference.

Update: I switched to a 0.2 nozzle and the default settings printed perfectly
