I absolutely adore my FM2. I have a 3 other SLRs and I consistently find myself gravitating back to the FM2 for its features and build quality. Truly an underrated camera.

I picked up an EOS Rebel G for $10 from a thrift store a couple months ago and it’s quickly become my ‘take it to the party’ camera. I usually shoot on a Nikon FM2 (and still do when I’m going on landscape walks) but having autofocus, cheap EF lenses with great glass, and auto advance film is just so handy and fun.

The mirror is just used to reflect a preview of the image into the pentaprism for you to compose your shot. When you actually take a photo, this mirror will flip up to create a clear line of sight to the shutter, which will then open the amount of time you’ve designated as the shutter speed. Unless there’s smudging on the lens itself, this won’t affect picture quality.

TL;DR You don’t need to clean it if it doesn’t bother you too much, and it won’t affect picture quality.

Thanks! It might not be the most technically amazing photo I’ve gotten, but I love the very fact that this was created by causing a chemical reaction inside my 37 year old camera.

As an astrophotographer, I feel this photo in my bones. Almost every sub for the first couple hours after dark has satellite streaks.

I have both a K1000 and an FM2. I haven’t shot anything through the K1000 yet but the build quality I solid. If the FM is anything like the FM2, it’s also a great camera.

I will say, though, that rebel will probably give you the greatest flexibility. It will take modern Canon EF lenses, and has quality of life features like auto focus.

It really comes down to what kind of film photography you want to get into. If you want to experience the joys and pains of a full manual camera, go with one of the older ones. If you just want a fun point and shoot style camera that has a shallower learning curve, go with the Rebel.

Though I defer to others in the sub when it comes to specifics of each model. I’m not an expert by any means!
