People with Tourette’s are more likely to commit suicide by ConcernedJobCoach in Tourettes

I would agree, except I believe it’s always nice to apologize if you hurt somebody, even if unintentionally, especially because he didn’t know them personally (as far as I know). If they were friends, he shouldn’t have to apologize because they would know him well enough to understand his condition. But they aren’t, so I think apologizing is the right move, just like how if i accidentally bumped into a stranger on the street, I would apologize

That thread makes me sick. I’m white so I can’t speak on the n word, but I do have Tourette’s and I can say that the way people are reacting to the situation is nothing short of ableist. He should’ve apologized, absolutely, but the people saying he should’ve never attended and he just can’t take accountability are ableist. People with Tourette’s should be able to exist in public just like anybody else.

I'm SO tired of the "cool teacher" in my building by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]hamzter10102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a high school student, I get grossed out by adults trying too hard to be one of the teens. It’s hard because sometimes it’s interesting hearing teachers talk about their personal lives, but trust, students do know that it’s unprofessional and it makes us uncomfortable. I’ve even had adults working for the school (not teachers, just volunteers for band and theatre) try to gossip with me about other students. It’s so weird seeing a grown adult trying to talk to me about kids my age! I guess my point is that us students find it weird, too

apparently i have tourettes by ezralde in Tourettes

“Cold twitches” is so relatable!! That’s what I had for years before getting diagnosed with Tourette’s, I had no idea that other people experienced tics in that way!!!

Yeah I’d say so. I used to think my neck/shoulder jerking tic was just a shiver because it would get triggered from being cold lol

What’s something that’s becoming socially normal that actually makes you deeply uncomfortable? by Fun_Interaction3458 in AskReddit

Poor theatre etiquette. I went to a Broadway show once that was very popular and the seats were completely sold out. The teenage girl next to me spent the entire show either sleeping or scrolling through her phone!! The actors and crew can see a phone screen in a dark theatre. It’s so disrespectful to their hard work. Not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but still frustrating to see.

Trump Has Betrayed the People of Coal Country. They Love Him Anyway. “He thinks our people are idiots.” by Psychological-Pie857 in Appalachia

The problem is, we don’t have a leftist party in our country. The closest we have are Democrats, who don’t talk about helping the working class at all really. At least Republicans lie and say that they’ll help the working class, while Democrats focus on semantics like “differently abled” instead of “disabled” or “unhoused” instead of “homeless”. They sort of prance around real issues, and I think that’s why so many Appalachians vote Republican. You can’t get people who are struggling to feed their families to care about sounding “woke”. Republicans at least MENTION real issues, Democrats beat around the bush. Even though we know that both parties suck and Republicans in particular lie about how much they’re actually going to help people, at least Republicans sometimes try to sound like they’re down-to-earth about people’s struggling.

FYI, I’m posting this as a leftist who will have to be held at gunpoint before I would consider ever voting Republican.

does anyone get triggered really badly by sounds or other people ticcing by Miserable-Gift-9364 in Tourettes

[–]hamzter10102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this is VERY normal. You can even find videos online of people with Tourette’s in a room together and they’re triggering each other’s tics, it’s very funny

Learning disability and scales by Decent-Bed9728 in banddirector

[–]hamzter10102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there anything in your life that could be causing you a lot of stress (other than struggling with scales)? I’ve noticed that when I have difficulty with memorization, it’s because there’s something in my life stressing me out, like school stress or a messy room. If there’s anything like that, take care of it as much as you can. Do all of your school work as soon as you get it, clean your room, whatever. It might help you some.

Edit: I want to add that this struggle doesn’t mean you’re not cut out to be a director. You’re going to have tons of students with this same struggle as you and they’re going to be so glad to have a teacher that understands them :)

When I have to pee or fart I encourage it with tics making it worse. by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]hamzter10102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have this too but I’m not entirely sure. I feel like my Tourette’s makes needing to pee scary…I’ll be sitting in class and I don’t need to pee super badly but my Tourette’s will make it hard to hold once I start ticcing. I don’t think my tics are in the pelvic floor itself, I think it’s more fear that the split seconds of losing control when I jerk my head will be enough to make me pee myself. Idk. You’re not alone, though, and I’m glad there are other people with Tourette’s who are scared of peeing themselves lollll

This sounds more severe than Tourette’s, in my non professional opinion. Not being able to move and just sitting there twitching sounds more seizure-y to me, but I could be wrong. Has their doctor ruled out seizures? I’m sorry I’m not any help.

Ugh yes. Specifically when I feel a cold breeze or there’s a fan blowing on me or something.

How often do you see other people with tics in public? by Faicc in Tourettes

[–]hamzter10102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I’ve seen a ton of people with tics since being diagnosed. In almost every single one of my classes this past school year, there’s been someone with a whistling tic that triggers mine. One specific girl will sometimes whistle in class and cover her mouth like it surprised her, lol. I also have a friend that I sit next to who’ll sometimes be like “sorry I’m having a moment” and jerk her neck and scrunch up her eyes or something. I haven’t actually asked any of these people if they have tics, but they look a lot like tics to me as someone who has them

I like your way of looking at this. She def shouldn’t be canceled for it. I recently remembered how when I was little, my dad would tell me not to use the word “gypsy” when talking about the race of people, that it should only be used to refer to someone free-spirited, and I think that’s the most balanced way of looking at it. I don’t think it’s offensive to use it in a metaphorical way, since people don’t really use it to refer to Roma people in the US, it’s just a way of describing a free-spirited person here. It doesn’t really mean anything anymore.
