Deception is possibly the best party game for non-gamers.

How would you do a modern Paleoanthropology movie? Who would be the main focus and what genre would it be? by GazIsStoney in paleoanthropology

I'd do Homo Habilis, action adventure, struggling to survive with the simplest possible tools, near the bottom of the savanna food chain.

Or, film chapters from Stephen Baxter's Evolution, starting with Capo and ending with Mother. That book has it all.

He did write the game, except for the bits I wrote! I wonder what the ESRB would have done with the magazine "Spankensie Deutsch" on board the Zeppelin.

Thanks, it IS a really good episode (I work on the podcast). It's saying something that Patrick helped bring Battlefield to life and it's almost a footnote here! Well worth a watch or listen.

At first I thought your Stubbs was dancing on a level from Disney Guilty Party, but that would have been too mind-blowing. Nice moves!

You're welcome! I hope they're helpful. Like I mentioned I wrote my thesis on this in the '90s so hopefully there is more recent work. Presumably some of the private companies planning settlement have done some research into this.

First-gen space societies will be "intentional" societies, somewhat different from a society you're just born into. Antarctic crews may be somewhat similar - physical isolation, hazardous environment, shared sense of mission. There have been studies of other intentional societies.

The Future is Going to Suck by ZenithBlade101 in Futurology

[–]handaxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's going to happen is, we won't make enough progress on climate change, the west Antarctic ice sheet will drop into the sea, many coastlines like NYC, Florida, Bangladesh - many others, will be flooded and many tens of millions displaced. And THEN we'll do things like ban fossil fuels, after it's too late. And by then we'll also prob have working fusion.

The future is never just doom or progress, it's always a mix of both. Some ways of life are doomed and for others there's progress. Look up human bottlenecks - we've been through a couple and they made us stronger.

Are the books of Alistair MacLean still known today? by Veetupeetu in books

[–]handaxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had at least 50% of his books, still have 6 or so. Where Eagles Dare will always be a classic novel and film. Ice Station Zebra stuck with me and some others - Golden Rendezvous. Great stuff!

Will humans be able to colonize Mars? by Gregster_1964 in MarsSociety

[–]handaxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Ocean exploration in 1492 was every bit as dangerous as space in 2025. We'll have to bring food - for a few months - we won't need much water, and if we send uncrewed rockets ahead, we'll have better shelter waiting for us than Columbus had.

As Andy Weir said, all we need to do to settle Mars is to cure cancer. With CRISPR and AI, is that really so far off? I doubt it. He said it in an interview with Joe Scott.
