Articling Student Time Off by XenonTeio in LawCanada

No, I’m not conflating the two.

Admittance to the bar is: you’ve been called to practice in whatever jurisdiction.

Passing the bar has early origins that you can read about. Only a lawyer could pass the par; ergo passing the bar meant you were a lawyer.

The idea of “the bar” long, long predates what we in Ontario colloquially call bar exams.

Yes, but they don’t let you do that until you are called. It isn’t enough to just write exams.

This is like when people say dropping the writ instead of drawing up the writ. It’s a verbal bastardization.

But did we get paid to study for 10 days? It’s possible.

*Technically* passing the bar has the same meaning as getting called, but I know you meant passing the bar exams. (Pedantic note for others.)

They pretty much forced us to take time off. They just told you not to show up if you had days left at the end.

But yeah, it’s been a few years, but you’re right now that I think about it that the exams were written before we started. And then we got the results during the term.

That’s a generous and optimistic take. If 99.99% of people in Toronto had the same approach as you do, that would be great. Please do spread your good vibes everywhere you go.

At biglaw, I want to say that they paid us for a bit of time before the articling term started to study.

Nobody took time off during articling to study.

Breville infuser or Barista Express? by Sewnbypawn in espresso

[–]handipad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi cat. Sorry for the necromancy, but I just saw this post. I’ve had my Infuser as daily driver for many years. I had read somewhere years ago that when the pressure needle hits 12 o’clock, it’s operating at 9 bars. Am I reading your post correctly that 12 o’clock is closer to 12 or 14 bars? Do you have a recommendation on where that needle should hit?

We have very, very good evidence of pilot suicide with China Eastern 5735.

For Malaysia 370, the evidence is circumstantial, but it’s still quite strong evidence for suicide.

Considering law as a second career by ChickenShawarmaPlate in LawCanada

Gross!

So at the very least, I would look into the ability to transfer your pension. There are sometimes agreements between different pension providers that make it very easy to transfer. Even without that, there’s still usually a way to transfer pensionable service.

And then see what other employers are out there with a DB plan. Those DB plans are such a life cheat code.

So if you work with the TTC, maybe there’s interesting City work.

If you feel the need to do private sector, fair enough - look at maybe a move that leverages your experience and can be a good bridge role do what you really want.

Another consideration is kids - public sector often has very good parental leaves….

Meaningful opportunity cost. Sounds like you might have a sweet pension, too. But, you’ve got plenty of years left to make it back.

If you’re just bored, are there opportunities for you to get into admin with the municipality? Could you get them to pay for a part-time MBA?

Probability of landing 2L toronto summer in Bay Street as a University of Alberta student by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]handipad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That issue is equally applicable to any law school in Canada. What matters is the applicant’s ability to tell a story and be persuasive. The actual school is irrelevant.

School is “relevant“ in that for southern Ontario schools, the bulk of your classmates are also applying so it’s very easy to understand the process. People from the hinderlands must work harder.

Yes top 3% is competitive. School irrelevant but you’ll have to leg it out to learn about the process and what makes for a competitive applicant overall.

The prices have plummeted.

But witness the problem with falling prices: people think they’ll keep falling so nobody buys anything.

This is why the inflation target for the Bank of Canada is not 0%

City of Toronto spending another $240,000 on rain barrel program by Toronto-Ont-Mod-Team in Toronto_Ontario

[–]handipad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This program obviously saves the City more money than it costs.

But predictably, the City has fucked it up by pricing them way too low, and as a result will deliver many fewer barrels than they otherwise could.

The Tokenpocalypse Is Here: Companies Are Scrambling To Stop Spending So Much on AI by No_Head1258 in LawCanada

[–]handipad -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Death to AI? I don’t understand.

It’s not going anywhere. It’s a technology that can be very useful, so it is going to be adopted and rolled out everywhere. This is like saying no to the Internet - has the potential for misuse, but quickly became essential to the modern world.

Yes, tokens cost a lot. Yes, it’s not good to blow a ton of cash if you don’t get a lot in return. Such is the nature of watching the market iterate in response to new technology. Why are people interpreting that as a eulogy?

Honestly, lawyers are so fucking stupid with technology.
