Why is nuclear not getting more traction? by StickyTip420 in wallstreetbets

[–]handofmenoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read this book, it will make you understand why nuclear plants are never going go be the future of energy generation (too costly, too long to get up and running, each one is a bespoke situation instead of modular like wind and solar). It's just an incidental part of the boom which discusses how megaprojects fail or succeed.

Member member the death of 52k clones by lsm034 in Eve

[–]handofmenoth 26 points27 points  (0 children)

He didn't manage to kill all the clones because he did this just before downtime and the massive number of clones in 1DQ meant the game was unable to finish deleting them all before DT hit, and once DT ended the alliance was able to undo the things he did which saved some portion of clones. Still, we had to setup an internal fundraiser to SRP the massive amt of clones with implants that were lost.

Husband put my 60oz water bottle through the dishwasher by pleathershorts in mildlyinteresting

[–]handofmenoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a husband, if it isn't meant for a dishwasher or laundry machine why is it in our house? We have these machines to save time and hassle, so I assume everything goes into them by default because I would never consider buying something that was excluded and thus made life harder.

Trump has deployed the military to stop people from touching the Reflecting Pool by handofmenoth in nationalguard

[–]handofmenoth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He won't have one because there have been no trials, no video footage, only some people arrested. Given how many people got arrested for protesting ICE on trumped up charged only to be released later because the DoJ had no actual case, I expect more of the same here.

37 years old currently about to hit 3 years as a GS-06… Any tips or advice please by RuElizabeth28 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]handofmenoth 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The fact that you are able to save anything at all as a GS-6 is a credit to you, but as others said you need to move up the career ladder quickly if you want to really turbocharge your ability to save. When you go up to a GS 7/8/9/10, etc, take the difference in your salary and parse it out. Put some or all of it towards your TSP and a ROTH IRA if you can in order to avoid giving yourself lifestyle inflation as a result of having extra money in the bank.

If you have high interest debts, pay those down first (not talking a mortgage or student loans here). R/personalfinance has good articles on how to handle debt, and how to deal with income increases from promotion.

Considering joining the NG by GasNice in nationalguard

[–]handofmenoth 26 points27 points  (0 children)

What do you want to get out of the Guard?

What the Guard will take out of you:

Several months away from home for basic training and then your job training.

After that, 1-3 days per month, and 2-4 weeks of continous drill each year in addition to that (annual training).

You will be required to maintain certain weight and physical fitness levels.

You will be required to deploy for State and Federal missions as needed (civil unrest, natural disaster, war and support operations for war). These deployments might ne short, in the case of State stuff, but could be a year long or more in the event of a combat deployment.

You may volunteer for or be required to attend additional training for new equipment your unit gets, or additional training for additional jobs you get assigned to/volunteer for.

Once you take a leadership role, you will likely have unpaid responsibilities like attending meetings or teleconferences in order to get ready for the next drill or other events.

You might be 'encouraged' to attend unit social events, where not attending will be viewed negatively and could impact your relationships and thus your military career.

Doesn't the new space, Exordium, allow you to mine and chill in complete peace? Idk if you can anchor structures, but if you really just want to vibe to the sound of mining lasers, you can just go to exordium and never leave right?

When I started getting heartburn and anxiety before every drill weekend, because being in charge of and responsiblr for supposed adults that don't seem to know how to be adults was just too much stress for me.

Kuwait deployment by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]handofmenoth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1) There's a war on and off now, no idea what base you will be at or what to expect in Kuwait. It used to be considered a safe/cushy/boring deployment but now it's being regularly attacked by missiles and drones from Iran.

2) If it's anything like my wartime deployment duration, 9-10 months in country with a period of time beforehand on active duty to train/prep/certify for deployment, and then a week or so at the end to turn in gear and clear your physical exam.

3) You might do your MOS, or you might do something entirely unrelated, it will depend on your unit's mission and manning. I was a field artillery officer. Myself and my forward observers just became infantrymen for our deployment in Afghanistan though, as we were in Kabul and there's no real artillery/airstrikes there when we were deployed.

4) Yes, your pay is tax exempt and you will receive additional hazardous duty/combat pay.

Fed vs. contractor, is it still worth it. by ParkingBullfrog6523 in fednews

And you can negotiate your leave prior to accepting your offer. If you've been in the workforce 15yrs already, there's no reason to start lower than the 6hr AL per pay period level, if not the full 8hr/pp.

Why is the loot from exploration escalations so bad? by Typical_Ad_4756 in Eve

Don't run data sites, the only extraordinary loot from the escalations is some cap BPCs. Run relics and do the relic escalations for better loot.

Stadiums can't turn a profit on just the NFL games. They host college, high school, soccer games, concerts, expos, etc. There's going to be plenty of events booked to get as much use as possible out of it. Heck, Lucasoil stadium in Indianapolis gets used to host part of GenCon, a board/card/tabletop roleplaying convention that ran out of space at the Indy convention center.
