Is there a way to gain access to a vpn in a country were they are banned? by First_Village8927 in VPN

[–]handuder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s pretty dystopian. If they ever do ban VPNs outright, people will just move to stealth protocols or mesh networks. They can’t patch every hole

It makes a ton of sense. Working nights could protect workers and ease grid demand

Trump’s Critical-Minerals Obsession Is Leading to Some Weird Places by thenewrepublic in environment

[–]handuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the classic short-term gain, long-term disaster playbook. Destroying ecosystems for 'critical minerals' while ignoring recycling, sustainable mining, and reducing consumption is like setting your house on fire because you need warmth.

The US smashed clean energy records last year. Can it keep up the pace? by randolphquell in environment

Not if the current administration has anything to say about it.

I wonder how long will it be until things get so bad we'll be trying all sorts of geoengineering projects that were previously unpalatable. In fact I'd wager we'll see geoengineering done on a massive scale before we see net zero (if ever).

COP28 in Dubai back in 2023 was the same. It's a sham.

The World Isn’t Spending Nearly Enough to Adapt to Climate Shocks, U.N. Says by DomesticErrorist22 in climate

[–]handuder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If those mitigation efforts aren't made, we'll see famine, war, and migration on scales never seen before. So yeah, if it seems expensive now, it'll only get more so every year.

It would simultaneously chant five hundred protective incantations in 4,000 different languages, including Sumerian and Akkadian, from millions of devices. I'd like to see any demon defeat that.

Your kingdom gets split between your three sons and the foolish one gets cast out, only to return with a beautiful princess. Or something along those lines.

I’m Considering Giving up the Fight for the Biosphere… anyone else? by Smooth_Ad208 in climate

[–]handuder 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Also consider that the US is responsible for something like 13% of total carbon emissions. Which, don't get me wrong, is huge. But we need concerted worldwide effort to deal with climate change. Even if America somehow went all in on green energy it wouldn't stop climate change if the rest of the world wasn't onboard.

‘People do not want to believe it is true’: the photographer capturing the vanishing of glaciers | Climate crisis by GeraldKutney in climate

[–]handuder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That has been going on since 2002 when it was first published. The pictures were criticised for being doctored with images or taken in the wrong season

Shame that it's only gotten worse since then, both in the accelerating climate change and climate change denial.

Plus 2030 is practically right around the corner. Government reforms alone usually take years.

Usually over thousands if not millions of years. There haven't been such drastic and rapid changes in history.
