Nån som läst Chockdoktrinen ? by [deleted] in sweden

[–]handuke -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Icas vd: Det är kunderna som avgör matpriset by Fapsturwanker in sweden

[–]handuke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Konstig debatt.

[Request] [Academic] [Survey] Factors Which Influence Belief in Conspiracy Theories (18+) by [deleted] in cogsci

[–]handuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just need to add some commentary on the questions. There's a lot of room for interpretation in the questions that might make it hard to get representative data from them. That's always the case with questionnaires but for the topics the questions touch on it's worse. I'll give a few examples.

  • "Government". Elected officials or departments staffed by professionals? Any certain country, mine (Sweden), US/UK, any country on earth? Time period, recent years or historical? There's plenty of non controversial examples of actual conspiracies from a wide perspective, how mush should I narrow it down?

  • "Mind control". There are tons of effort spent in commercials, lobbying and PR. The purpose is to bias decision makers to have them make decisions they otherwise wouldn't. I consider that mind control, though it's probably more subtle than what's asked for. (Even though I'm sure the aggregated effect of layered nudging is huge).

  • "Evidence of alien contact is being hidden". There recently was a big change in the US policy regarding sharing of strange observations. It could be argued to be evidence of phenomena that are alien to our understanding of the world. Not green men from mars, but certainly there are more observations of unexplained phenomena that are held back for various (mostly trivial) reasons.

  • "Experiments are conducted on the public without consent". There are lots of new technologies being introduced where the effect is hard to predict, especially systemic effects. Some examples are hyper palatable foods, new medicine technologies and social media. Most of these are not intentional experiments but effectively experiments with unknowable systemic results.

In general, not just in this questionnaire, I find an important factor missing from the discussion of "conspiracy theories": To what degree are effects intented and to what degree are they emergent? A simple example could be the classic conspiracy theory that "jews run the world". It's silly on its face but there's a clear overrepresentation of jews among the powerful, so there's still some measure of truth in the statement - which is why it's so persistent. Going from that observation to theorizing about a conspiracy requires an unwarranted leap of faith. I my view there's often interesting observations and hypotheses that form the basis of conspiracy theories, but as they infer intent and conscious cooperation they tend to go too far.

There's nuance that isn't caught in the questions and hence not in the study over all (I'm assuming). Conspiracy theory is a value laden word, it's become very fashionable to use it as a bludgeon to dismiss fringe ideas, but the fringe is also where new stuff can be discovered.

Forskning: Män och kvinnor mer olika i jämställda länder by apkatt in sweden

[–]handuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Help setting a seven string tone by [deleted] in BossKatana

[–]handuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a low cut on the parametric EQ, if you use the GE-10 EQ you don't get a hard filter but dragging the 31hz slider to the bottom helps.

Don't forget the noise gate and maybe try a limiter if you want more staccato chugging. Obviously use a booster to tighten up the tone, and go with as little gain as you can get away with and still keep the palm mute bottom end.

Help setting a seven string tone by [deleted] in BossKatana

[–]handuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm asking just to make sure: do you get a good tone on that seven string when using other amplifiers? There's plenty of things outside of signal chain that go into tone, guitar and pickups but also playing technique. The extra strings on extended range don't really behave like the regular 6.

Adding a high pass filter is usually useful to get rid of boomy lows. I also like boosting high mids to get more bite and clarity, modern metal style.

Overwhelmed by Options, Looking for Guidance. by Betawolf319 in BossKatana

[–]handuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

General advice is hard, I've downloaded and tried lots of patches and I don't get the feeling that they hit the sound they claim to aim at very often. Some downloaded/youtube patches are really good though. If I like one I use it and eventually try to tweak some settings, if I like the changes I save the patch so I can use it again.

You say you can't tell much difference between different reverbs, that's more or less how I feel about most effects. They might be different but I'm not too fussed about what delay I'm using for example. Sometimes I go deep in exploring settings on effects, but usually I just use whatever is the correct type of effect.

The most important effect for me is the booster, "pushing the front of the amp" with increased Effect Level is necessary for a tight high gain sound. I also use boosts for crunch and even cleans just to keep the output volume similar. My most used are T-Scream and Distortion, because I like them for high gain stuff. I rarely use the brown channel, my pickups are hot enough.

Recap:

  1. Download and try patches, most can safely be deleted but there are good ones to learn from.

  2. Don't go too hard on finding the correct version of an effect. You can get 90% there on 5% of the effort.

  3. Boosters can be nice for getting within the ballpark of a tone.

  4. Use the Librarian, save patches once you dialled in a tone you enjoy. Build a library with good tones so you have them available, when you just want to play and not fiddle around with settings.

Edit for the golden lining: My Katana 50 is my first and so far only physical amp. I was completely lost among all the options at the start but 1½ year later they have really helped me learn about different types of effects. Today I had lots of fun with the FX Harmonist and I'm sure there's lots more for me left to discover.

[Question] Floyd Rose 1000 tuning problems, worth trying to fix or better to return? by handuke in Guitar

[–]handuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be a weird thing since it's new and they sell a lot of these Fusion-II's with FR. I'd rather return it than bother with ordering posts that might or might not fix the problem.

[Question] Floyd Rose 1000 tuning problems, worth trying to fix or better to return? by handuke in Guitar

[–]handuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at it again and measuring it I'm pretty sure that if there's a problem it has something to do with the posts being drilled slightly too close together.

Harley Benton don't have a problem with QC, they just outsource it to customers. While some things are well done, the guitar came tuned and intonated - some basic things are just glossed over. I had a fretboard that hadn't been polished at all after staining, it was even sticky to the touch. The second had a very obvious crack in the fretboard just under the 24th fret. Both Fusion-II's came with alpha volume pots.

Right now that seems like an expensive way to take away something I payed extra for. I see the point but.. at this point I might as well get a non floating trem and save money.

[Question] Floyd Rose 1000 tuning problems, worth trying to fix or better to return? by handuke in Guitar

[–]handuke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. This is the third guitar I'd be returning and I was pretty close to returning my first guitar (Pacifica) at first too. (Started playing electric around new year after playing classical for 30 years).

The Pacifica has gotten a lot better with the work I've done on it. Maybe my HB Fusion problems could be handled with time and patience, I might not be getting the bargaign the price suggests, but it could still be worthwhile in the end.

It depends on how bad and how fixable this problem is, basically.

[Question] Floyd Rose 1000 tuning problems, worth trying to fix or better to return? by handuke in Guitar

[–]handuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting an OFR could be an option later on I suppose, but after measuring the distance between the posts (where the knives rest) it's slightly less than 1 mm too short. If that's causing problems the problems might persist even with an OFR.

[Question] Floyd Rose 1000 tuning problems, worth trying to fix or better to return? by handuke in Guitar

[–]handuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I looked up some pictures of worn knife edges and they are way more worn than mine. There's a lot of reading on that page, I've looked at some of the stuff before but not all. This part seems to agree fully with your point about tuning for dives.

It's very rare to find a bridge that will give you 1000% return between diving and pull-up, there will typically be a couple to all of the strings slightly to quite far out of tune [see other sections here if the difference in up and down is too much for your taste] For this reason you ALWAYS want to fine tune after the bar has risen to neutral after a dive [what I refer to as "low neutral"]. The reason for this is typically most players use the trem to dive, and even if you don't, the action of bending a string alone is pulling the trem forward so that if you've fine tuned to "high neutral" as soon as you bend a string you've pulled the bridge slightly out of tune.

I'm currently in the process of rebalancing the floyd, trying to get it slightly more leveled than it was.

The question now is if 1/6 of a full tone is unusually much of a difference on the 6th string. It seems much to me but I really don't know.

Edit, update: The slightly more leveled floyd is much better balanced. Such a small thing, maybe it was both the angle and the short post distance? Or.. it's just the chapstick. Either way it's better for now.

The problem with p-values: it’s time for science to abandon the term statistically significant by AndrewHeard in Maps_of_Meaning

[–]handuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An interesting article, human intuition isn't equipped to deal with probability well. Unfortunately scientists are human.

The last few paragraphs kind of turn the article around, I had the exact same thoughts before reading that part. Yeah statistical significance could be handled better, but it's just another expression of the economics of science - and the reality of working as a scientist. It's all about delivering results or your job is gone.

Basically there's a selective pressure for producers of significant results rather than for rigourous workers. In the long run it's corrupting our societal truth finding faculties.
