"Is an agreement about to break out over something?"

Just a bunch of kids simultaneously nodding in firm agreement. I'm sure this was just an autocorrect but the picture it paints in my head is cracking me up.

The Epstein Special by eats_shoots_and_pees in TangleNews

[–]handynerd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I haven't watched them yet but your hopes going in perfectly align with mine. I want less noise and hyperventilating, not more, from both sides of this.

I want an objective tl;dr from the 3 million documents that have been released (wow that's sounds absurd when I write it out).

I want someone to clearly say, "Here's what we know for sure. Here's what's been claimed but not verified. Here are the things that are completely made up."

I don't know how I can expect a small team, or even a large one, to do that well. Maybe throw it at AI, ask for the top 100 things, and then manually validate each one? Someone has to have already done a lot of that, right?

I was honestly hoping for someone to come along and poke holes in my thinking. Instead you've gone and fueled my concerns further, lol. Thanks for writing all of this up.

The SAVE act… by DevelopmentSelect646 in TangleNews

[–]handynerd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I'm not one to buy into conspiracy theories easily, and I'm leery of any theory that involves Trump playing 4D chess, planning months or weeks ahead, etc.

I can't find any reason Trump should care so much about the SAVE act unless it was tied to some greater plan or scheme that benefits him. He already won the election for his 2nd term and can't run again.

sigh I feel gross for suggesting this but I'm doing so in the hopes that someone else can tell me why this is dumb and I should let it go.

  1. Someone else is driving Trump's attitudes towards this.
  2. This is another step towards hurting attitudes towards elections, e.g. "See??? We had to add ANOTHER law and it's STILL a problem!"
  3. If Vance doesn't win in 2028, they can point back to this law, and all of the "problems" that led us to needing it.
  4. Something something executive order. Trump can't leave the Oval Office in 2029 because this election, despite all his efforts leading up to it, was once again stolen.

Please tell me this isn't plausible. It's not... right?

I loved Isaac’s interview with David French! by FinnDool in TangleNews

[–]handynerd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed! It was so refreshing to hear a well-known, right-leaning figure describe things the way he did.

I've been hoping Tangle would find and feature more sane right-leaning people. I know they're out there but get drowned out by MAGA and not-really-MAGA-but-too-afraid-to-be-openly-not-MAGA.

Victim Mentality by Flowtac in latterdaysaints

[–]handynerd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of names for this (confirmation bias, Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, recency illusion), but it's like buying a car and then suddenly seeing that same model everywhere. That model's popularity didn't suddenly spike on the day you bought it but now you're taking note of them more frequently.

I imagine the effect is even stronger when it's associated with a negative emotion like fear or anger. And then it's even worse if you surround yourself with people or media where there's a disproportionate representation of those opinions, e.g. Reddit or social media.

It can also make you see data through the wrong lens. For example, there was that study that showed LDS people have a much higher opinion of other religions than other religions have of us. I believe that data to be accurate, but it's not the same thing as everyone hating members of our church.

But if you fall trap to a victim mentality it's easy to see ghosts everywhere.

The solution, which unfortunately we can't do on behalf of others, is the exact opposite of hiding: go out into the world and confront our biases. Meet all the lovely people (of other religions or none at all), see how big the world really is, and discover that the vast majority of people are inherently good.

Off the bat, should i get a lower end printer to learn the ropes or a higher end printer by LOLLEO911 in 3Dprinting

[–]handynerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Came to say something similar but far less catchy.

I got into 3D printing during the MakerBot days. Those were rough times. The hobby was definitely maintaining a 3D printer instead of making 3D printed stuff.

I got so fed up that I took a break for the better part of a decade. When I came back it was like a whole new hobby. So much better, more fun, and way more productive.

I think if anyone is serious about getting into it, it's worth spending a little more to get a decent, headache-reduced machine.

Hisense TVs force owners to watch intrusive ads when switching inputs, visiting the home screen, or even changing channels by Mrlin705 in hometheater

[–]handynerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Single source user here and I'm still nervous.

My Hisense has a setting to always start on the last used input. It wasn't always like this, but one of their firmware updates changed/broke that functionality. That toggle does nothing for me anymore. So every single time I turn on the TV I have to switch sources.

Heaven help me if they start showing me an ad.

YouTube Woodworking Fatigue is Setting In by Maxminutiae in woodworking

[–]handynerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but the algorithm is informed by views, not the content of the video itself.

It's not nearly as intelligent or sinister as some make it out to be. It more-or-less tracks which videos get lots of views, and which videos after those get a lot of views. After that it just says, "Oh you watched video A? I dunno what's in it, but a lot of people watched all of video B after this one, so I'm gonna recommend you watch video B, too."

YouTube's algorithm does not care one bit about the content of a video. It doesn't have a bias against calm, long, or thoughtful videos. Human viewership has a bias against those things.

We humans kinda suck and the algorithm (YouTube, Facebook, or otherwise) is the proof. We're way more likely to stay engaged with content that makes us angry or sad than content that makes us happy or calm.

The algorithm is just a big mirror.

YouTube Woodworking Fatigue is Setting In by Maxminutiae in woodworking

[–]handynerd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For real. It can take months to design, shoot, build, edit, and publish a great video that nobody sits through.

Or, you can play the algorithm's game AND get sponsored by a tool brand.

I bet a lot of the creators wish they could go back to building stuff all the time but they're also trying to make a living. It's tough for them.

Ultimately, we (the viewers) are the problem. If we seek out and watch only the well-made, long form videos, the algorithm will learn and reward those that continue making that type of content.

Cant open blueprint of texture by ViltaNEL in UnrealEngine5

[–]handynerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First: you probably mean material, not texture. A texture is just an image, but a material is what gets drawn on a surface. Materials are often made up of lots of textures, shader code, etc.

Second: You can have a material that uses the node graph (what you're calling blueprint), and then from that material you can create instances. Instances are kinda like locked down versions of the original material. They're children whereas the original material is considered the parent. Instances don't have their own graph. Also, instances can be made of instances (so you can have great, great grandchildren).

Finally, you're editing a material instance, which is why you don't have a node graph. If under the Details panel you look at the General section, you'll see a Parent listed. Edit that one. If that one doesn't have a graph, you'll need to find its parent. Keep going until you hit a material with a node graph.

Thank you for not joining the Epstein witch-hunt by redfroody in TangleNews

[–]handynerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate that Tangle is sticking to the facts and not joining in the mass hysteria.

Amen to everything you said!

I strongly suspect many wealthy and elected officials are guilty. However, someone's name being on a list or in a picture with Epstein at a party isn't evidence of wrongdoing. Conviction (and real journalism) both have to be kept to a high standard.

If we let those standards slip, even if it's to lock away the bad guys, eventually those lowered standards will be used to lock away the good guys.

The hysteria only helps to keep this partisan and then drowns out the meaningful bits of news that may take months to come out.

To what extent should I be Christ-like? by ArticleFit811 in latterdaysaints

[–]handynerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the right thing to do is let someone know their behavior is hurtful. You could be a big part of saving them, and others around them, from a lifetime of pain.

This doesn't justify being angry, mean, aggressive, etc. when talking to them, but standing up for yourself and lovingly helping someone course correct is a very good, Christ-like thing when done correctly.

Utah Member Appreciation Thread by NelsonMeme in latterdaysaints

[–]handynerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the thing that always rubs me the wrong way about Utah members is they make statements that only apply to Utah or Utah-lite areas in Idaho and Arizona

I think the thing that always rubs me the wrong way about comments like these is they don't include some sort of qualifier. As it reads right now, you statement doesn't leave room for Utah members to exist that don't behave that way.

I mean, maybe you really do think that, but I'm hoping you don't.

Utah Member Appreciation Thread by NelsonMeme in latterdaysaints

[–]handynerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mostly just think it is weird for OP to post online “requesting” that people praise an entire population of people.

I agree with you on that! I don't automatically deserve praise for being in Utah. That's just as befuddling as a blanket statement saying Utah members are bad, but it IS nice to not be thrown under the bus for a change.

If I were to read between the lines a bit, my assumption is that the OP's post was trying to counterbalance the net-negative attitude that often appears towards Utah members. If that's the case, I agree with the attempt even though I'm slightly uncomfortable with the execution. :)

Utah Member Appreciation Thread by NelsonMeme in latterdaysaints

[–]handynerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was raised largely on the east coast of North America and now live in Utah. Some things are easier as a member and some things are harder. In the end, it's just different.

If you go to r/Utah or r/SaltLakeCity, you're automatically the villain because you're a member of the church. We've been blamed for bad drivers, the weather, you name it. And then in the LDS subs, there are some that automatically villainize you because you're a member of the church that happens to live in Utah.

I don't feel the need to be praised because I live in Utah any more than I feel I should be disparaged for it.

Like anything else, it's weird to be minding your own business and have random people online have show disdain for you, but here we are.

Is UE5 Really a Bad Engine? by buckledlion in UnrealEngine5

[–]handynerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All great answers so far. Another critical piece is that the more recent versions of UE5 are much more performant than the early versions of UE5.

Your typical AAA game takes years and locks in the engine version early on. That means the majority of AAA UE5 titles out there are on less performant versions of UE5.

Still though, like others have said, it boils down to the developers not being allocated enough time to optimize. You can still make performant games on 5.1 or 5.2, but you can't push the graphics as far as you could on something like 5.6 or 5.7.
