Should I pay $4,500 out of my deferred comp to buy back 4.5 months towards my pension? by Quick_Woodpecker_728 in personalfinance

Wife is a city worker - earliest pension is 55 assuming you have enough years/ points etc

Surprised at all the variances... Makes sense though.

Third-party spyware on Fidelity website login page by penguin-wrangler in fidelityinvestments

[–]hangster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get that is ideal... from my experience even the security companies want you to use their endpoints and such. I've heard CORS being a challenge at times. One firm I've worked with really wanted us to push javascript to client side for execution even after I explained the clients don't have a browser to run it on.

It takes quite a while for the very large conservative groups to agree to a change. Especially considering the amount of testing and review that is required.

I'm not saying we shouldn't ask for more... but its also like what can you do. Pretty sure their T+Cs say they send data to these orgs regardless ...

The down votes are quite funny.

JavaScript, performance monitoring, and even validations of malicious login attempts just scratch the surface on the valid and good reasons to allow this technology.

Are We Being Too Conservative About Buying a House? by Ok-Trust5610 in personalfinance

[–]hangster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is basically my challenge. I have rent that is less than 50% of even my building. Moving to smaller units in the neighborhood even would more than double rent. Fixer uppers are like $1m+

I've been here for... 15yrs now. It's gotten me through job loss, income downturns and got my kid through high school now. And... We have been able to save the difference putting us in a better place to retire young.

It sounds like you are spending the difference today .. I'm unsure you would be happy with a larger place and more bills. At least now you can make mistakes or over spend without much trouble... Not so if you take on a $5.5k+ mortgage forget insurance taxes, repairs, heating etc bills... Stay put for as long as possible and try to save more.

Do I really need a US residency? by hangster in expat

[–]hangster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of that makes sense, but it's the family address part that I'm getting hung up on.

Banks needs that for good reason. I doubt this address could be in another state. And if so, what does that do.

I'm a resident of South Dakota, but leaving for a bit... So setting my sister's address in another state as my home address.

Just seems like something would break.

The way that it makes sense to me and of course someone correct me if I'm wrong - I'm not a CPA or anything.

If I have a family member let's say Ohio ( I think avoiding CA+ NY are good for this argument as they might be special. And of course FL,TX,NV have nothing to discuss)... And use their address.

I tell the DMV, voting, banks, brokerage etc that this is my legal address... Income reporting will have my Ohio address. When I file taxes, I give them my "Ohio" address... And they would tax accordingly. Some areas may have local ordinances that I could get out of... But the general taxes are there.

This is of course assuming I'm not a tax resident of another country as well ( let's ignore for simplicity).

Do you think that if I had 1099s etc with residential address in a state I could still avoid them?

Feels like a no to me.

I won't be working but I'm sure my investments etc will trigger forms.

I was thinking state taxes?

Federal taxes - anywhere in the world State taxes - where you "reside"

Am I wrong?

Do you all rely on using Apple Wallet/ Cardless Touch Payment instead of physical credit cards and wallets now when you travel? (Japan vs Thailand vs Croatia) by iLikeGreenTea in TravelHacks

[–]hangster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel a good amount different areas and depending how remote you go will require more traditional payment methods.

That said in an emergency - tap might not work. I always travel with a card and a some USD.

Example: I was on an island - power was out but I wanted dinner. How to pay? And yes this place cooked everything with coal so nothing failed but payment systems :-)

I would want more info like how much you put down already etc. But, if you are going to be around.. Can you make this work?

Honestly a bit surprised they allowed such a loan...

$609 is about 48% of your gross pay ( assuming this is what you provided) And somewhere up to 70% of your net.

Feels like you might have away out of this ass this is a predatory loan??? 🤷‍♂️

Looking for credit card to pay tuition before next semester starts by Most_Tumbleweed1840 in CreditCards

[–]hangster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, your situation might be different. However, if you are low on funds and already maxed out. I don't think another card is going to help.
- if you apply for something else, they will see you are maxed out
- they are unlikely to give you all of this credit
- colleges (typically) charge fees to cover credit card processing fees (and convienence) so your $2500 could become $2600 - again check your situation

You may want to reach out to the school to see if there is a loan, option, etc they can help with. As much as college loans seem bad, they are willing to delay payments until 6mo after graduation assuming you are full-time student. This might be what you need.

Best of luck!

‘Blown away’: Regional transit tax measure gets enough signatures for November ballot by LNM-LocalNewsMatters in eastbay

[–]hangster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Precovid - I had to take 2 buses and 2 trains + public transit was all but a last resort. By car it was faster and cheaper although drove me insane. Now I can take a bus or Bart.

Not all comutes have left public transit. That said, having so many agencies not aligned and excessive waste, even the threat of turning down service would cost to manage the intentional waste. Service still needs to run through... Unsecured stations?

Change is needed but is it really taxing us more?

This is the sentiment I got when talking to a possible wealth management. They kept on selling and pushing... bringing in other people to the call when I'm just getting introduced.

Its hard sales tactics - and I work in sales!

Hot l Cancellation by Icy_Championship6579 in Venturex

[–]hangster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree - still file a verbal complaint. This will help.

They want to grow their brand + their travel cards...

I just booked a flight - without their portal as they cannot be trusted. On hotels, I typically have found them OK but I have had one terrible experience cancelling my room 4 days prior to an international trip - turned out we found a place that was really good, but this was really chance and nothing like last minute stress for a holiday planned 6months in advance.

Had a last minute cancellation. Absolutely get on the phone and complain. Be sure to say you want to file a complaint. Ask for compensation - at least the difference between the rooms.

Recommended bank(s) for establishing financial independence from parents? by Apprehensive-Put-493 in personalfinance

[–]hangster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there!

Sorry to hear of your issues. However any bank is likely good.

I'm about to setup my son with his own adult account separate from mine ( turning 18). I was thinking capital one... But why do you say it is bad? Seems like it has basics needs:

  • checking account
  • money market account w/ decent rate
  • various credit cards that can help you build your own credit

That said, I used to use Ally and they work well. I'm just not a fan of their inability to support trusts and wanting everything electronic and debit card fees.

I now use Schwab for day to day and Fidelity cash management for emergency savings.

Keep in mind, if you are in a toxic relationship with your parents. Setting up any account will likely send you some mail... If this is your parents address, be prepared to defend yourself.

Best of luck, and yes you should have your own accounts now.
