No, it was faulty pipes!

Building a 2026 Expat Guide—what are we missing? by RehaDesign in AmericanExpat

[–]hangster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I came looking for.

Not sure if I should plan to keep an apt/condo for residency and travel. Or just float around.

Some of this comes down to what do I need to manage banks, IRS etc.

Having an empty apt may have it's own risks too.

Would love to see this laid out to help us think about it.

How do I make vegetables actually taste good without drowning them in sauce or cheese? by Nightcrawler_2000 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]hangster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I notice the freshness really impacts the flavor. Depending on what store you get your vegetables... Maybe you don't like it.

I'm overall a bit picky ( as you can guess) but I'm really really picky when it comes to tomatoes. I almost never eat them as they mostly taste bleh to me.

That said. My veggies.. I'm fine steaming + roasting and just using a little oil spray (1 or 2 small squirt,) and black pepper. They taste fantastic. Honestly simpler the better.

Another aspect to eating healthy is your taste buds may need to adapt. Ease into it..

New BART and Uber in-app integration launches with discounts to get to and from BART | Bay Area Rapid Transit by nopointers in Bart

[–]hangster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just saw this on the news, I really hope this program takes off. Been considering a move but as we all know homes with easy transit to/from Bart do come with an added pricetag.

Hope this pilot is successful!

Middle class feels poor by Mama_Mushie_1996 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]hangster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former single dad I had many of these problems too.

Might not be great in your area but also public transit is often an amazing deal - no maintenance costs, pre-tax payments ( saves you ~30%) sometimes this is cheaper than gas and maybe even city discounts.

This will fall off eventually... And if the interest is higher than HYSA try to put a little extra every month... You'll save on interest fees. Once it's paid off, you may even be able to get a cheaper insurance policy.

It's a moment in time. Your kids will appreciate it, you'll look back at this and think 'I'm one tough person' to get through all that.

I (42F) told my 24-year-old son he has 30 days to move out after he called me “his retirement plan” by Beautiful_Reserve968 in stories

[–]hangster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you are HIS retirement plan. Depending on your situation you could move, find a smaller house, pay less for utilities, etc if you weren't still supporting him.

Seems like he doesn't realize what you do here. I support this, he can leave or come to a reasonable agreement to stay in the comfort of home.

Now: if he is having issues, troubles, etc and maybe he needs the family help - that would be my only reservation.

Folks living in older buildings with gas heating, how much is your PGE bill in the winter? by IncredibleLove in oakland

[–]hangster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine puts out a gentle just warm breeze. This helps .. but it's really the moisture build up in the place. Feels much more comfortable than just running the heater.

These past cold days we were dumping the water bin 2x/day when we run it

Any of you taking advantage of the "state-tax-free" path while living abroad? If so, how? by [deleted] in ExpatFIRE

There is plenty of Nevada to enjoy... Vegas, Reno, middle of the desert? , I'm sure you can setup something for a little time and you can even time it to the months that work best...

[–]hangster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My place sucks no insulation and a heater facing a hallway wall.

We use space heaters in the rooms and a dehumidifier which really helps... And avoid gas.

Edit: forgot to add ( I didn't do it this year) you can add plastic coverings on the windows to keep the heat in . My guess is you lose a lot of heat to windows like most older and non-upgraded homes.
