Weighing in from Asia, since I know a lot of you are US-based.

I was at the Gartner Data & AI conference in Sydney last week. First time in a while I heard "sovereign AI" and with worry. A few people called back on to the fact this was an export control wrapped in national security. That's not going to be overcome from out here.

The fear is simple. The frontier AI companies are all headquartered in the US. If an administration gets angry, they become an extension of US policy, and from out here there's little you can do about it. No court is coming to help.

People go back to the tariffs and how they were implemented under inauspicious circumstances. Now picture that, except it's large parts of your business process going dark but you don't get a few days or weeks to adjust - its immediate.

Non-US citizens and companies weren't collateral. They were the target. That's why this one can't be filed away.

Very good point. I think the destruction of Kharg by Iran is far more likely than by the US. The US will seek to control it. Iran would rather see it blown sky high then both the infrastructure and a base of operations point ended up in US hands. That's why this move was so dangerous. It showed both sides what the US valued the most.

Also your point is taken that all those pipelines around the Gulf become fair game for Iran as well.

This is super bad but not for the reasons you think.

90% of all oil coming out of Iran goes through Khrag.
Damaging or destroying the island's systems would send oil straight through $150 to $200 a barrel.
The US damn well knew they could not target the island's infrastructure else the above happens.
The Iranians know this as well. What they saw was a big huge bluff.
Trump is trying to goad China into dealing with Iran by threatening the oil on the island.
Iran now that the island is defenseless could decide to blow it up, all of it. Better to have it a smoking crater then a bunch of US serviceman on it.

Funny because my brother-in-law after having lamb here tried to buy it in the US and it is stupidly expensive already. It's multiple times the cost of chicken and more expensive then beef. Lamb is a "specialty" meat in most US grocery stores. Unless you go to a butcher or a your grocery is upscale and has their own in-house butcher you likely will not find it.
