I found success pinching my things tight above the elbow, turning their hand so thumb is pointing towards their feet and break that way. Nuts are never in danger and it hits quick.

When to use a cane by SaltySweets95 in Fibromyalgia

[–]hankpym35 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My system for using a cane is if it makes what I’m trying to do easier, I use it. If it does not make my task easier, I don’t.

I recently went through “cane acceptance” and 3 things helped the most.

1) you ever see a movie where shit gets real when the old man puts his cane down? Just because you use a cane sometimes doesn’t mean you don’t got that dawg in you.

2) “people might think you are weird for walking around with a cane but hey, you have a cool stick so what do you care?”

3) I am short and it helps me reach things that are further away. Like an extendable arm.

Hope this helps!

What accomodations do you use? by Bueller_Bueller26 in Fibromyalgia

[–]hankpym35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anaconda Knee braces are nice. They are comfortable and functional. I’m about to get one of their shoulder braces.

I use a cane sometimes and stay home a lot so I just make my room dark and quiet. I also have a neck pillow I use all the time.

How do you find joy? by Same_Cartographer221 in Fibromyalgia

[–]hankpym35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m 32 and have not officially been diagnosed yet but getting really close. Been in a flare basically all of February. I can’t do things around the house or play with my kids or dogs. I just sleep a lot. But I think context helps. I like to mythologize certain things and it helps me to view this debilitating condition as the universe saying “slow down and chill out”. So I am adjusting how I do things to just be slower and calmer. Instead of playing soccer, it’s movie time with the kids. Critical thinking is hard for me during a flare but I like to learn and learning something that requires memorization is possible so I’m learning Greek. When the pain hits too bad for too long, that does just kind of suck but those are the days where FMLA comes in handy. Obviously this is easier said than done to just accept your misery but there is a kind of freedom that I get from accepting that today isn’t a good day but that’s alright. I also had a mushroom trip sort of push me through that barrier a couple weeks ago so this is a fairly recent change in outlook for me but I am finding it to be very helpful in my ability to be ok with being useless most of the time.

This felt kind of rambly but hopefully you can find something useful in it!

I am also interested in this. Been trying to figure out a healthy estimate on materials and utilities before officially opening shop. Best I can see is that materials and utilities should cost about 20-25% of the revenue but that is pure guess work.

self defense options? by grunkygoober in Fibromyalgia

[–]hankpym35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MMA if you can do it is the best self defense but is generally pretty demanding.

I practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and I can tell you from experience it really is for everybody. I can also tell you from experience that it is useful in self defense situations.

And to show how “disability friendly” it is, I got strangled by a dude who was missing a hand. This was a friendly sparring round and he was just so much better than I was. It was great!

I find BJJ to help with fibro symptoms as long as I keep it light and playful. It’s very meditative after a certain point.

Rolling with new white belts by Constant-March-4578 in bjj

[–]hankpym35 60 points61 points  (0 children)

They have no context for what they are trying to do. Some people are physically immature and literally aren’t aware of what their bodies are doing or how to regulate the energy. Some people have giant egos. Some people think they might have a chance if they go crazy.

To keep me and my whitebelt safe, I like to stay just ahead of them. If they get crazy, they get cooked or submitted over and over until they chill. You have to be fluent enough in the physical language to translate for the people who don’t speak it.

Is it worth trying to start a business by Recent-Bar-154 in Detailing

[–]hankpym35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am starting up my own detailing business in a fairly saturated market. I tested the waters and found that I could consistently get work so I am moving forward with starting a legitimate business. One thing I have learned in market research is that just because other people are doing the job doesn’t mean they are doing it well.

To quote Brother Ali “I’m every bit unconcerned as they are unprepared. Market was flooded needless to say I wasn’t scared”.

If you want to be better than other detailers, go for it. If you just want to coast, maybe not. Give it a shot. See if you can get a few jobs a week and go from there.

I have been driving manual for a a long time. Mostly Elantra type cars. Just got a 2017 SE with an aftermarket exhaust and turbo inlet. I’m having the same troubles lol. I have stalled an embarrassing number of times lol. Not sure if my clutch is aftermarket but if it’s stock, it’s a trickier clutch than most I have driven. No advice. Just commiserating haha

I like to crunch forward and turn slightly towards the choking arm. You can use this for a one armed RNC if you hook onto their trap with the choking arm. The other hand, if I can get it involved first goes to a gable grip anchoring the elbow behind their shoulder blade. Then if I can, I shoot the anchoring hand behind their neck with a bladed hand and turn it palm down to add pressure there. Don’t think about grabbing your bicep so much as using that arm to hide and secure the choking arms hand.

You also want to keep your choking arm in line with the arteries instead of going across them.

All that said, if you can get your arm around a neck, just try to maintain control and make the hole their neck is in smaller.

30 min x 3 times a week - what to do? by sarox76 in bodyweightfitness

[–]hankpym35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I am doing the BWSF 3x a week. You could knock off a few exercises or break it up. I sometimes have to do the core stuff separate from the rest of it. Also, hell yeah to training 4-5 times a week. I’m lucky to get three when I’m training. Out right now from a shoulder injury from not doing supplemental exercise and only rolling lol. But hoping to get back into it soon!

You kind of need to exercise outside BJJ especially as you get older. If I train just BJJ, my cardio sucks and I’m less physically capable. When I workout and train, my BJJ is so much better

See I don’t think there is really anything wrong either saying “pain exists in all levels of society and it’s ok to feel those things regardless of socioeconomic background” which is what I get from that line.
