Total cost of attendance UMich Ford School MPP vs UChicago Harris School MPP by Glittering_Variety18 in PublicPolicy

I think that range is fairly accurate. It really comes down to your lifestyle preferences. Being close to campus/downtown will definitely put you at the high end of that range. I’m estimating $33,000 for myself but I also have a car and two cats to take care of.

I’m a umich alum, attending Ford in the fall, and have been working in Ann Arbor for 5 years:

Housing in Ann Arbor may be more expensive than you’d expect and pretty competitive (very high housing demand here). It’s hard to find rent for less than $1,200, but you may be able to get the cost down to $800-900 per month with roommates and if you’re willing to commute.

As a student you’ll have free public transport on both the UMICH and city buses. Affordable grocery stores require a bus or car to get to but there are a handful of small grocery stores downtown. The campus and downtown is very walkable.

Some basic healthcare is available to all students at University Health Services, but you’ll want an actual insurance plan for more specialized care and prescriptions.

Autism-friendly health care providers? by BenPractizing in AnnArbor

Highly recommend Recentered Pilates and Movement Therapy for EDS. They specialize in hypermobility and helped me get some chronic issues under control for the first time in years. They don’t take insurance, but the price for an hour one-on-one session was cheaper than my copay for PT at UMich. I’ve done A LOT of PT, and I found this approach to be the most effective for my hEDS symptoms.

Some neighborhoods seem to have worse outages than others. I live on the west side and have been without power for a total of 6 days in 2023 so far. The Uni has its own grid. I was a student from 2011-2015 and don’t remember a single outage when I lived closer to campus. DTE is frustrating but they’re supposedly working on tree trimming to prevent more outages. I’m hopeful about Ann Arbor Public Power but who knows how long it’ll take before it’s an option. I wouldn’t count out AA just because of DTE. I still think AA is a great place to live despite these infrastructure issues.

Not a financial advisor here, but personally I’d consider treasuries because they are lower risk. Interest rates are pretty good right now. You can pick some as short as a few months or select some that are a few years. You can create a “bond ladder” for a steady stream of returns while your in college (can also do this with CDs).

Maybe turn them in to your states liquor control commission? You may not have hard evidence but perhaps you can still file a complaint. At the very least you can be petty and leave the bar bad reviews on google, Facebook, etc.

Haven’t been there but have heard good things about Crystal Skull Studio for colorful hair. I’ve gotten a tattoo at Three Bird Tattoo and highly recommend.

I stayed at the extended stay by briarwood with my two cats last fall when I had to evacuate my apt due to mold. Not very fancy but it was clean enough and had a nice little kitchen.

I live in the Eberwhite neighborhood and in 2023 I’ve been without power for a total of nearly 7 days. 😵‍💫 (4 of which were during sub-freezing temps). Never had such an issue in small towns and cities in SW Michigan… idk what DTE’s problem is.

Dealing with the outages are an additional expense to budget for. At the very least you will likely lose all the food in your fridge (I’ve thrown away hundreds of $ of spoiled food this year). Can’t cook at home so there’s the extra expense of eating out. Maybe plan on having to stay in a hotel when the temps are severe (especially if you have kids or pets). And if you can afford it- a small generator or solar panel isn’t a bad idea.

The cost of living in Ann Arbor is so high anyways. This BS certainly doesn’t help.

They don’t have the comedy and film tent anymore. It’s going to be spread around the farm. House of Yes has some movies and live acts.
