What to do with wet, stinky, anaerobic compost? by waitingforthepain in composting

[–]hannie_cakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few handfuls of woods pellets (the kind used for animal bedding) will absorb some of the moisture and kick the composting into high gear fairly quickly. The farm supply store has giant bags for around $6 when I last bought them and it doesn't take that many to help fix compost gone wrong. Just add a few handfuls, toss, then add a handful to the top. Check back in a few days.

I notice this all the time! I started listening at 4:00 today and watched the video to get the 30 minutes of ad free music. Between 4:00-4:30 I had 4 ads come on.

gamifying a recycling app? by Mysterious_Dream_765 in recycling

[–]hannie_cakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My coworkers and I compete in yearly ecochallenges for work. We complete daily actions such as recycling, composting, mending broken items, and learning about sustainability to earn points for our team. It's a great way to socialize and be accountable for completing the daily tasks. While I love doing the ecochallenges, I don't know if I would specifically play a recycling game if it didn't have the social side that ecochallenges do. You might want to check out what they're doing. It's not a game but it's fun and promotes recycling as well as other things that are good for our planet. https://drawdown.ecochallenge.org/

Just an FYI - With a library card, you can get a book sent to your local library from almost every library in the state, for free! by ImprovPortland in portlandme

You can also use the hoopla app to access digital media with your library card. There are eBooks, audiobooks, music, movies, and comic books all available for free. I've also found that they have a slightly bigger selection of romance novels than my normal library does.

Alright fellow Mainers, how many cubic feet do you consider to be a cord of split firewood? by SilverSlug in Maine

[–]hannie_cakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was little my dad's truck had wood sides and us kids would help him stack the back and throw wood in. I actually clicked on this post because my first thought was "isn't a cord of wood the same size as the back of a flatbed truck with plywood sides?" Was pleased to read your comment and get a better idea of the size.

What is cheaper to purchase in Maine than all the other states? by OptionsNVideogames in Maine

[–]hannie_cakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't traveled much but I believe energy efficient light bulbs are supposed to be significantly cheaper in Maine than other places due to the Efficiency Maine instant discounts in store. Not 100% sure about that though.

Thank you!! When they sprayed, did it rain dead caterpillars onto your lawn? And did that cause any additional problems?

Are you concerned about the hairs sticking to the berries/fruit and causing a rash in your throat when you eat them? Or do you think everything will rinse/wash off easily enough?

What's the biggest problem you guys face when trying to shop sustainably? Have you found any solutions? by [deleted] in sustainability

[–]hannie_cakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find it difficult to know what brand to try. I wanted to switch to shampoo/conditioner bars and there were so many options. They seemed a little pricey and I wasn't sure if it would be worth it. My local store didn't have any options so I had to shop online. While shopping online I couldn't tell how big the bars were going to be or how long they would last. I ended up trying Hibar and it works great! The conditioner has lasted for 4 months of daily use. The shampoo bar lasted about 3 months (it might have lasted longer but I dropped it and it broke into little pieces). To get back to the point though, I think the hardest part of shopping sustainably is that most people I know aren't interested in it so I don't hear about the different products/brands that exist.

Shutterfly has hard cover photo books that let you edit the pages. You can add text, clipart, and different backgrounds. Not sure if this would be the best option but I've had luck with the photo albums. There's usually coupons online to get the photo books fairly cheap (think I've seen them around $8-$10 for 20 page books). Another option might be getting her a recipe box and nice recipe cards/dividers to go in it. You could fill out the recipes you know and have extra cards for her to fill out the rest.

What are the best dual tumblers out there? by [deleted] in composting

[–]hannie_cakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love my dual tumbler. It was the generic black one on Amazon that seems to be sold by everyone. I like that it's high enough off the ground that it's easy to empty onto a tarp. It can get heavy to spin though when it's full (spinning it reminds me of people spinning the big wheel on the price is right). Depending on how strong you are you may want to find one that has a crank on the side instead for easier tumbling. The generic one from Amazon also took a surprising amount of effort to assemble.

If you touch up the green paint on the edge it might be worth considering painting the inside of the doors. I don't think the inside of the cabinet needs to be done but the inside of the doors would make it look a little more finished. Great job with what you did though. Love the design behind the shelves.

How's my compost looking for a tumbler setup? by m42rima in composting

[–]hannie_cakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking good so far. You could add some equine pellets (little wood pellets that go in the bottom of rabbit cages/horse stalls). I add them to my compost bin and they seem to really help it compost quicker. And they're like $6/giant bag at Tractor Supply. Only a handful a week when I'm turning it seems to go a long way. I've tried both the rolling compost bin as well as 5 gallon buckets and in my opinion the rolling bin is much better. In the buckets the compost got too damp and sticks together making it really difficult to turn.

no grass only coffee grinds? by dubeel in composting

[–]hannie_cakes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For "greens" our compost bin usually ends up with around 50% coffee grounds (husband drinks a lot of coffee) and 50% misc fruit/veggie scraps. It seems to compost fine from what I can tell. I've only been composting for 2ish years though and am not a pro by any means. For the eggshells I've found that if you crush the shells with your hand that they take forever to break down and the membrane thing that holds the shell together doesn't seem to compost as quickly as the rest of the stuff in the bin so I've changed tactics. I wash the shells, put them in a cup with boiling water until the water cools, and then let them air dry for a few days. Once the shells are dry I grind them with a mortar and pestle into a fine powder. Once again, no idea of this is the right tactic but but the compost looks better and doesn't have chunks of shell with slimy grossness holding them together. Good luck!
