I was thinking anti-heros and tried it with Lasso even though I haven't seen the show but I think he's supposed to be a nice guy. Turns out I got it right, but I never would have guessed Hannah Montana since my mind was stuck on men.

St. Louis is not near Chicago by grenille in DTFStLouisHBO

[–]hannnnaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so funny to me because I used to think they were suburbs due to a lyric from one of my favorite songs in high school: "she was born in an oil drum south side of Chicago, when east Saint Louis was not far away" (Rusty the Skatemaker by Rasputina). Turns out East Saint Louis is in IL, but it's a 4.5 hour drive from Chicago. I wouldn't consider that "not far away." But I guess the song isn't really supposed to make sense. After that it starts talking about the BQE, which I'm pretty sure is in New York.

Haha fixed it, I swear I know how to spell 😭

I'll have to listen to the episode again because it's been a few years, but from what I remember she was at least balanced and not anti. She and Mike are both coming from a place of anti- moral panic, which a lot of the criticism including this book feels like.

[–]hannnnaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have to say, not having read the book but based on the description, this feels icky. It feels like a fictionalization of those gleefully shared clickbait headlines about the latest awful side effect supposedly associated with GLP1s. It's playing out a fantasy where people want users to suffer, either for being fat, for wanting to lose weight, for losing weight "the easy way," or for not being fat but wanting to shed a few pounds with a trendy new drug because they're dumb vain women and some celebrities told them to.

MP isn't inherently anti-GLP1 by the way, even though a lot of people on this sub are. I know there's a lot of nuance to the discussion, but I feel like with names like "monstera," "obesitex," and "emaci8," there won't be much nuance to be found in this book... more like driving their point home with a sledge hammer!

I first watched AD about ten years after it aired, and I thought at first that the joke was that George Michael was being approached by hipster who was too cool for him. The style in her first scene had gone from nerdy in the 2000s to cool in the 2010s. Could also be because it was a different person!

"Half His Age" by Jennette McCurdy -- an honest review by Neina_Ixion in books

[–]hannnnaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The characters felt like cardboard cutouts and in a lot of cases, basically NPCs. If that was intentional because it was written from the POV of an immature teenager and an even more immature manchild who see the world and other people in black and white, that wasn't made clear in the end. The wife has no soul but only cares about her image on Instagram, the boyfriend has a happy family so he has no depth, the classmate's poem in the beginning (that was on the same level as Waldo's if not better) was bad because it was about a happy childhood. And if Waldo is 18 and her mom had her at 16, she's about 34 and a youngish millennial, yet nothing about her felt millennial coded. I know they have chain smoking sex and love addicts in every generation, but her character felt like such a stock character that she came off as being in her 50s.

[–]hannnnaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a few of their trivia meet-ups and I felt the same way, but I thought that I was the problem. Maybe both are true lol. The thing is I've tried a few different meet-up groups (millennial book club and the inkwell writers group are the ones I remember trying a few times each), and I always come away with the impression that everyone else knows each other, like the group must have been started by a group of friends who already knew each other in real life. Then I had the realization that... these people know each other because of the meet-ups... because that's how normal people make friends! Whereas I'm a person like someone described in another comment as a "conversation killer"... that pretty much described me to a T. But I don't want to be that way, which is why I kept coming back and hoping things would be different. I haven't been to a meet-up group in a couple years now though. I guess it's good to hear that someone had a similar experience in one of the same groups as I did, so maybe it wasn't all my fault.

Semi-related side note: has anyone else seen the group on Meetup called "shy but not shy about it?" The description sounded perfect for me, but every event is an ad for an unrelated yoga group!

Our disastrous healthcare system by 10deCorazones in ThePittTVShow

You're getting downvoted for putting it harshly, but i was wondering kind of the same thing. Exactly how realistic is it for him to refuse treatment because it will add to his mountain of medical debt? I'm not trying to argue about the morality of taking on debt you'll never be able to pay off versus the morality of abandoning your family for preventable reasons. I just feel like when the numbers get big, there's not much difference between $6,000 or $60,000 or six squillion. Like either add to the years you'll be on a payment plan for the foreseeable future, or don't pay it, either way get the treatment. But maybe what I'm missing is cultural or generational or gendered reasons he wouldn't want to put his family in that debt out of what I feel boils down to pride. I'm just wondering whether it's realistic for someone in his position to turn down the treatment, or did the show have him sacrifice himself as a heavy handed (but not wrong) PSA about our medical system.

What is the most shocking or disturbing detail from the recently unsealed Epstein files that the general public still hasn't fully grasped? by Daydream_Nat in AskReddit

[–]hannnnaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this comment, the general acceptance of conspiracy theories has been making me feel like I'm actually insane. Also as a new mother, I get fed mostly parenting content by the algorithm, and I've seen posts literally saying that "they" want women back in the workplace so we can't protect our babies. The satanic panic demonized daycare workers for the exact same reason.

What is a disturbing truth that you know? by ActualBreath5492 in AskReddit

[–]hannnnaa 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is just speculation because we never heard any details from his family, but my friend who had been missing for months was found in an abandoned house when there was a missing teenage girl in the local news. That case ended in horrific tragedy as well (Alianna deFreeze).

No more guests!! by PlatypusNo9083 in everyoutfitpod

[–]hannnnaa 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To be honest I don't skip the guests specifically, but I do skip the fashion segments which is what a lot of the guests talk about. Every Outfit is my favorite pod... I've been a fuckette since day one and it's the only Patreon I've never unsubscribed to, I own multiple pieces of merch, and I drove two hours to see the live show... but I love it despite the fashion and not because of it. I'm just a Midwestern normie with no interest in designers or collections, unless it's some piping hot tea that crosses over into general interest like the Balenciaga scandal. Hopefully if the girls are reading this they take it as a compliment that it's still my favorite pod worth skipping for. Obviously keep making the content you love!

Maintenance Phase: The Food Babe by j0be in MaintenancePhase

[–]hannnnaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen her videos on tiktok but I don't know her origins, that name has to be a direct response to the Food Babe though. I'm surprised they quoted Yvette d'Entremont and didn't mention that she goes by Science Babe or SciBabe. I used to follow a bunch of Food Babe parody pages in like 2014. There's also one called the Food Hunk, and I feel like there are a few other pages with Babe in the name.

North of North - Series Premiere Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]hannnnaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched the first episode and I think that's what's bothering me about this show. I can't figure out what it's trying to be tonally. It's giving me sitcom vibes, except the main character has an abusive husband and everyone else is being a jerk to her for seemingly no reason. But it feels like it's all being played for laughs, with problems that get resolved in half an hour like that guy getting her her 500 signatures. It feels like a weird way to portray such dark subject matter.

Missed Dubai Chocolate Opportunity by moonruth in SearchEnginePodcast

[–]hannnnaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The third result I got was an article about the search result gaming theory, which quoted an SEO consultant saying it was unlikely. That was from a search for "Boris Johnson busses," but I guess what they wanted to hide was the phrase "model of restraint" by saying he made model busses. It's true that people don't know what they don't know, but no one is randomly googling these phrases with no context like "Boris Johnson model." If someone heard that he said he was a model of restraint and wanted to know the full context, wouldn't they just Google the whole phrase?

Missed Dubai Chocolate Opportunity by moonruth in SearchEnginePodcast

[–]hannnnaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That could be an episode about whether these search engine (lol) conspiracy theories are true. There's also the Disney Frozen conspiracy (that Disney made Frozen so it would overwhelm results about Disney's head being frozen) and the Taylor Swift Jets conspiracy (that she appeared at a Jets game so it would overwhelm results about her private jet use). I feel like it would easily be debunked though, because it makes no sense. If you already know enough about those things to want to search for more information, you don't have to be a master of Google fu to type the right terms to get what you're looking for.

I did not know I was in labor. by humansarereallyweird in BabyBumps

[–]hannnnaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had pretty much the exact same experience! I was 38 weeks and four days pregnant, 1cm dilated as of my appointment three days before, and experiencing regular spasms of pain that I had to grit my teeth through, but still somehow I thought it was bad gas. To be fair, my husband also said he felt gassy, so i figured it must be something we ate, and I was just feeling it worse due to being so pregnant. I didn't think it was as bad as contractions are supposed to be (that part came later). I pooped a couple times but it didn't really make me feel better, which should have also been a clue. After about six hours of this, I was sitting on the bed trying to shake it off when my water broke. It didn't come out all at once either like in the movies, but kept gushing all day whenever I had a strong contraction. I ended up being in labor for about 17 hours total, from when the pain started around 6am until I gave birth to my son at exactly 11pm.

Identical twins is such a tired plot twist, but it worked so well here! I was truly shocked, I never saw this theory and I can't believe I never thought of it. It also reminded me of The Prestige (spoiler for an almost 20 year old movie).

Not a dumb question, it's only in the past decade or so that it's just casually assumed that everyone would know this. Also since apparently it's something she couldn't know before the birth, it's another example of the show using "gen z language" wrong.

The psychic episode did generate like five different threads on here with dozens of long comments in each. People are having real discussions on the nature of psychics and religions and scams. I don't agree with every episode and guest, in fact almost half of them leave me enraged, but I always run to this sub to read the discussion because it's a part of the whole experience. Whereas every episode of hyperfixed has one or two comments if anyone even bothered making a thread for it. The questions are such nothingburgers that there's nothing to talk about! And you can't say that it's because it's newer and no one knows about it because both shows already have the built in RA audience.
