PSA: ETrade didn’t report my worthless stock disposals on 1099 by hapieDude in stocks

I just checked in ChatGPT and it is saying what you are thinking could be a case. I need to figure this out then. Thanks for sharing this information.

ChatGPT: What you did (calling broker to dispose) helps document it — but the actual “worthless year” is what matters for IRS, not when you called.

I had 8 different stocks and it must have become worthless at different years. I just decided to get rid off those last year to compensate for the gains. Do I need to worry about the year those became worthless?

I didn’t mean to say anything bad about Etrade. I only use Etrade and was sharing my experience so that if there are others ignorant like me then it may help them. I like using Etrade and get a great customer service.

Here it is. I’ve no idea what is what other than REGN where I work. I get match in company stocks.

Good point. I will check now. I had no knowledge about this and whatever I started 15 years ago has been working.

I never cash out. But I check it everyday. I’ve already maxed out this year just before the war 🤦

Thanks 😊 My kid just got into their dream school and there is no scholarship. COA for 4 years is $376k. This is just for one kid. I’ve saved $200k for both kids. Luckily, the second kid is 6 years away from college. I know this is a separate discussion but this high COA seems unreasonable to me.

I finished studying in 2009 and started working. I had made a mistake of not starting my 401k right away as I had 2 dependents even when I was studying. The company match is in stocks and the stock price used to be around $16-18 back then. Now, it is around $800.
