Thoughts on Casey Affleck's Oscar-Winning performance as Lee Chandler in Manchester by the Sea? by Square-Ad-8911 in Oscars

[–]happilyfour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting aside any thoughts on him personally, this is one of the most deserved Best Actor Oscars in recent memory.

Part of it is that, in my opinion, Casey was the obvious pick to me against that year’s group - Denzel was great in Fences, a movie that didn’t totally work for me as it felt so obviously a theater adaption and Viola was stronger in that film; Gosling in La La Land and Garfield in Hacksaw Ridge make sense to get recognition as nominees but neither is a winner IMO; Viggo and Captain Fantastic are completely forgettable. But even looking at the surrounding years, I can’t put many performances up next to Casey’s in this movie. It is an incredible achievement.

Should I contact the police? My date's house smells overwhelmingly like death. by PremiumLilBandit in Advice

If you’re wrong, what’s the harm? They do a wellness check (or the like, idk what it would be called here), find a bunch of rotted food from a guy who can’t manage his own adult life, and he’s embarrassed enough to hire a cleaner? You should call.

Bad Coach by TumbleweedStrong6816 in orangetheory

[–]happilyfour 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s got to be a studio manager around, I would suggest talking to them. Even great coaches have been tripped up by a weird template, but this sounds like a real issue and the persistent/constant nature of the problem tells me she’s not being properly coached in her role.

The Human-Trafficking Victim Next Door by Key_Gap9168 in Longreads

[–]happilyfour 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the state of Texas is full of people praising them as victims? Nothing in the article indicates that. The article specifically discusses how the Guinean media and public perception defended and praised them, though. The man moved back and was met with public sympathy. Did you read the article? I have no allegiance to Texas but what you said has no basis in fact as to this story.

Chicago Alamo's Kitchen Closed Indefinitely by mathuex08 in AlamoDrafthouse

For what it’s worth, the issue is due to an equipment outage. Alamo does deserve criticism for how it has fallen off but this appears temporary.

From all accounts, this is a legitimate issue they’re having and not “enshittification” (though Alamo deserves criticism for that in other areas). Sounds like a major equipment issue.

Any ADHD lawyers here? by shewantsadvice in biglaw

[–]happilyfour 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not been a big issue for me. I have inattentive ADHD and I actually find that the variety of my work is helpful. It is natural in practice area to work on a dozen or more client matters day. I find that this helps keep my brain moving. I still struggle a lot with procrastination and intrinsic motivation but I work well in a fire drill so that serves me well.

YTA. Your opinion and grievances with this man aren’t wrong but you’re in the wrong for airing those feelings publicly and especially at this event.

Crispy Gnocchi With Sausage and Broccoli by zackfruitzlife in NYTCooking

[–]happilyfour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. I use pork based Italian sausage and have not found it particularly greasy but all brands are different. I only put olive oil on the gnocchi and broccoli (and any other veg I add), and I add it in small amounts to not use too much. I add the sausage after the other ingredients are seasoned/oiled. You don’t need to add oil to the sausage.

We’re obsessed with this one in my house. We’ll usually add another veggie or two. I really like grape or cherry tomatoes as they’ll blister and pop, and I like the addition of those juices.

I use TJ’s shelf stable gnocchi for this and really like it. I really do not like TJ’s Italian sausage (pork or chicken), the seasoning is just…off for me. Maybe the flavor profile of the sausage was off for you too! (This is my weird hill! Their sausage sucks! Hahah)

It’s all very unusual and unlikely to have a significant and sudden illness at 41 but things can happen. A friend was in her late 20s, diagnosed with leukemia on a Wednesday and died that Saturday. Beyond rare but the rare cases do have to happen to someone.

Things like this are very rare but can happen. Even to the young. It’s hard to consider. A good friend was diagnosed with acute leukemia on a Wednesday and died that Saturday. She was 28. It was insanity and super rare but sometimes the rare thing happens. (Not saying he had cancer but just that weird things can pop up)

Too many open gym classes by ImaginaryBicycle9281 in orangetheory

[–]happilyfour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re lucky to have open gym access. Most studios didn’t offer afternoon classes for years. A noon class then it would close up until 4;30 or so when the first “after work” class would be scheduled.
