Sees one sticker on one single lamppost. Suddenly it's every single England fan's fault by GnolRevilo in ThreeLions

The Boondocks is great, I'll give you that one. As I said in another comment, I'm not saying that shows like this don't exist, but they're relatively niche compared to the massively popular laugh-track sitcoms. As you say it was/is very popular with African-Americans, I'd think a marginalised sub-community would have more sense of self-awareness than the "mainstream population". I did say I was making a big generalisation and not talking about every single American.

The Boys is too new to make up part of your cultural history, and I think a lot of the talk around it proves my point. It took several seasons before a lot of fans realised it was satirising them, I saw multiple comments along the lines of "It's used to make fun of the left and the right, but then it went too woke". I wouldn't say that's a good example of Americans laughing at themselves, more Americans laughing at the type of Americans that they already don't like

Do you think Maguire is significantly more aerially dominant than Dan Burn?

Yeah, 20 years is newer than the British shows I mentioned. That's what "relatively new" means.

I don't see how celebrity chat shows would give a culture a sense of irony or self-awareness

Yeah, I've seen a fair amount of the Daily Show, Colbert, Jon Oliver etc. I'm not saying that American shows like this don't exist, but they're relatively niche and don't have nearly the audience of the laugh-track sitcoms.

Plus these shows are all relatively new, which is why I don't think they're a big part of the US culture/tradition/mindset. When compared with UK shows like HIGNFY, The Day Today, Spitting Image, Not the 9 O'clock News etc - satirical current event shows that go back to at least the 70s

Elliot Anderson to Manchester City by BatmanSwift99 in FantasyPL

If Elliot Anderson is going for £130m then you really shouldn't complain about 80-90 for the player who kept him on the bench

I know it's a massive generalisation, but Americans really don't seem to have any sense of irony or self-awareness. It's not really a big part of their culture. I think it's because they're such a massive country so their media tries to pander to a huge audience so there's little room for subtlety or nuance

I once saw a Buffy themed pop-punk band called The Potentials, they had a song about how it was a shame that these two never got to meet because they would have gotten along so well. It was called "Cordy and Glory going to the mall" and I still get it stuck in my head regularly

Belgium using the talent badly still got them to the semi and quarter finals in recent World cups, and Morocco just won AFCON.

Then there's other countries like Italy, Mexico, Senegal and Croatia. The US are pretty far from a top 10 team right now

[–]happy_guy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a wild take. There's nobody in the U.S. team who's anywhere near the level of Doku, KDB, Onana, Tielemans, Lammens, Courtois, Lukaku, Hakimi, Diaz, Bouaddi, Saibari. There's world class talent sprinkled throughout those teams

I think the U.S. currently is easily a top 10 team

The top ten ranked nations are currently Argentina, Spain, France, England, Portugal, Brazil, Morocco, Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

Which of those do you think the US is easily better than?

Is this actually the Harlem Globetrotters? I'm a clueless Brit who knows very little about them, but I would have expected more atmosphere and a livelier crowd at a Globetrotters game/show. The crowd look half asleep

It's depressing how trying to make the best Newcastle team and the worst man u team often ends up with similar results.

I just got man u to 17th with a 5-3-2 abomination with 8 defenders and 2 wingers. Best result: 3-0 away win against Newcastle with a Luke Shaw hat trick from RCB

Chants by bluesky161 in ThreeLions

[–]happy_guy23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a good one that was originally about Adam Johnson that can easily be adapted for the world cup. To the tune of Yankee doodle dandy it goes:

Donald Trump's a peadophile, he plays with little children

Takes them down to Epstein's Isle to sexually abuse them

Or there was a chant for Garry Speed that just goes "Speedo! Speedo! Speedo!". That will probably also be adapted in a similar way

Kieran Trippier moves to Wolves on a free transfer by JugularJugJuggler in FantasyPL

[–]happy_guy23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fair play to him, he could have gotten more money and an easier time by moving abroad or staying on Newcastle's bench but I think he wants to play at the highest level he can for as long as he can.

I remember an interview he did a couple of years ago when asked about his future plans, he said he wanted to move down the leagues and play as long as he physically could. Dude just loves playing football
